Short answer: YouTube does not broadcast a Google Drive file by itself. To stream one continuously, a cloud host or service must retrieve the authorized video, play and encode it as a live feed, then send it to a YouTube Live event. StreamNeo is the simplest option here: upload your video, add your YouTube stream key, and start the cloud stream. For a custom setup, a cloud VM running an encoder can do the same jobs, but you must build in Drive authentication and restart recovery. Google Cloud Live Stream API is a live transcoder, not a documented one-click Drive-to-YouTube relay.

Which option should you choose?

Option What it does What you need to verify
StreamNeo Uploads a video or playlist and streams it continuously to YouTube from the cloud. It plays uploaded videos; it does not pull files directly from Google Drive. You must upload the media to StreamNeo and provide the YouTube stream key.
Cloud VM or VPS with an encoder Runs a player/encoder that retrieves your Drive file and pushes a live feed to YouTube. You configure authorized Drive access, playback, encoding, stream-key security, process supervision, and recovery. The reviewed official sources do not establish a particular VM provider as a turnkey Drive-to-YouTube service, nor verify provider pricing or uptime.
Google Cloud Live Stream API Accepts live RTMP or SRT input, transcodes it, and produces HLS/DASH output saved to Cloud Storage. It is not documented as pulling a Drive file and sending it directly to YouTube. It is a live transcoding pipeline, not a file-playout service.
Dedicated playlist/streaming service May offer cloud video playout and RTMP output. Confirm that it explicitly supports your source storage, looping or playlists, YouTube output, and automatic recovery. No named service with verified Drive integration and continuous YouTube output is established here.

For most people who want a managed, uploaded-video workflow, start with StreamNeo. It runs continuously in the cloud, supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and gives the first day free. If keeping the source specifically in Drive or controlling the encoder yourself is essential, use a VM-based architecture and plan the integration work.

How the Drive-to-YouTube workflow works

There are three separate jobs; a service must cover all three for the workflow to be unattended:

  1. Retrieve the source: The host needs authorized access to download the video from Drive.
  2. Play and encode it: An encoder turns playback into a live stream in a format accepted by the downstream service.
  3. Send it to YouTube: The encoder publishes to the ingestion address and stream name associated with a YouTube Live broadcast.

YouTube supports third-party encoder streaming and documents RTMP and RTMPS ingestion options. The exact ingestion details are supplied for the broadcast. Keep the stream key private; anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to your channel. See YouTube’s live-stream setup guidance, its ingestion protocol comparison, and the LiveStreams API reference.

Or let it run in the cloud

  1. Upload your recording or build a playlist.
  2. Add your YouTube stream key.
  3. Go live; StreamNeo loops the content from its cloud service.

Nothing has to stay powered on at home. Your upload streams at its original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot; automatic recovery handles a YouTube drop. The first day is free with no card, and the Monthly plan is $9.99 per month. Start your free StreamNeo day.

Option 2: build a cloud VM or VPS workflow

A VM is the flexible route if you need the video to remain in Drive or want to manage the playback and encoder yourself. It is not automatically turnkey: you are responsible for authenticated file access, playback and encoding, credentials, and recovery. Google’s Live Stream API documentation identifies an encoder program such as ffmpeg as an example of a live-stream source, but does not specify a complete Drive-file playout configuration.

1. Confirm YouTube eligibility and prepare a live event

YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. Create or schedule a Live event, then obtain the ingestion details for that broadcast. Use the endpoint and stream credentials YouTube issues for that stream rather than assuming one address or key applies universally. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions and the LiveStreams reference.

2. Set up authorized Drive downloads

Do not rely on an ordinary Drive viewing or sharing URL as a stable unattended media source. For a binary video, the Drive API documents downloading content with files.get and alt=media. A webContentLink is another documented route when the requesting user has download access. The application needs an authorization scope that permits content access.

Check the file’s capabilities.canDownload value and any applicable download restrictions. Owners or shared-drive organizers can restrict downloads. The VM’s credentials must remain valid, and your workflow needs to cope with permission changes. Refer to Google’s Drive download and export guide.

3. Play and encode the video for YouTube

Run a media player/encoder on the VM and configure it to read the downloaded file, play it continuously or according to a playlist, and send its live output to the YouTube ingestion endpoint. Select a protocol YouTube supports for the broadcast; RTMP or RTMPS is the practical starting point for an ordinary encoder workflow. Follow the current encoder and ingest requirements in YouTube’s setup guidance and protocol comparison. The material available here does not establish a specific ffmpeg command, bitrate, resolution, or keyframe value for your file and event, so do not copy settings blindly: use the current requirements for the chosen YouTube workflow and verify that the encoder output is accepted.

4. Supervise the process and plan recovery

Keep the VM and encoder running, monitor whether the source is available and the process is publishing, and configure a supervisor or equivalent recovery mechanism to restart playback/encoding after a process failure. Protect Drive credentials and the YouTube stream key; avoid placing secrets in public scripts or logs. A literal 24/7 requirement also means planning for host restarts, expired or revoked Drive access, network interruptions, and YouTube ingest drops—not merely starting the encoder once.

What Google Cloud Live Stream API does—and does not do

Google Cloud Live Stream API is designed for live inputs: its documented inputs include RTMP and SRT, and it transcodes to HLS or DASH outputs saved to Cloud Storage. Its overview also describes backup input and live-to-VOD capabilities. Those functions do not establish a direct pipeline that retrieves a stored Drive video and pushes it to YouTube. If you choose this API, you still need an encoder or another supported live input, and a separate, documented path for the desired YouTube delivery.

There is also a continuity constraint: Google Cloud’s quotas and limits page, accessed October 3, 2026, says live stream sessions last 24 hours after a channel starts; after 24 hours in a streaming state other than STOPPED or STOPPING, the channel may be restarted. This is specific to the Live Stream API and means a 24/7 design using it needs a tested restart plan. It should not be presented as an uninterrupted 24-hour-plus session.

Permissions, copyright, and YouTube rules

You need permission both to retrieve the Drive file and to broadcast its contents. Drive access alone does not grant rebroadcast rights. YouTube’s live content must comply with its Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. Make sure you have the necessary rights for music, game footage, clips, or other material in the recording, and review YouTube’s current live-stream requirements before starting. Your channel must also meet the eligibility requirements described in YouTube Help.

Costs and trade-offs to check before committing

The official material cited here does not establish a current price for a VM, a specific provider’s uptime, or a verified turnkey Drive-to-YouTube offering. Compare providers using the complete operating cost rather than the VM’s headline rate alone.

  • Compute: choose a machine capable of the playback and encoding workload you intend to run. The appropriate CPU/GPU capacity depends on the media and encoding approach.
  • Storage and transfer: account for downloading the Drive file, keeping any local copy, and sending the live feed over the network. Check the provider’s current regional charges and terms.
  • Operations: include setup and ongoing work for Drive credentials, stream-key security, process supervision, monitoring, and recovery.
  • Continuity: confirm how the host handles maintenance and restarts, and test the recovery path rather than assuming a service name guarantees uninterrupted streaming.
  • Service fit: if evaluating a dedicated playlist service, verify Drive or cloud-storage ingestion, looping, YouTube RTMP output, automatic recovery, and rights requirements in its current documentation.

Troubleshooting common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check
The VM cannot retrieve the Drive video. Missing or insufficient authorization, download restrictions, or changed permissions. Confirm the API credentials and content-access scope, check capabilities.canDownload, and verify that the owner or shared-drive organizer has not disabled downloads. Use the documented Drive download flow rather than assuming a view link is a media URL.
YouTube does not receive the encoder feed. Incorrect broadcast ingestion details, stream key, protocol, or encoder output. Use the endpoint and stream name for that specific broadcast, verify the key, and check the selected protocol against YouTube’s current protocol comparison.
The stream stops after running for a while. Encoder or VM process failure, source access loss, network interruption, or—when using Google Cloud Live Stream API—the documented session restart behavior. Inspect process and host status, confirm Drive credentials and permissions, and test supervision/recovery. For the Live Stream API, account for its 24-hour session limit and restart the channel as required by the quota documentation.
The file plays, but the stream is rejected or unstable. Output settings may not meet the selected YouTube ingestion requirements, or the chosen protocol may not suit the workflow. Check the encoder’s actual output settings against YouTube’s current encoder guidance and protocol documentation; do not assume arbitrary source-file properties are valid live settings.
A stream is interrupted over copyrighted material. The broadcast may not have the necessary rights or may conflict with YouTube policies. Confirm permission to rebroadcast every part of the file and review YouTube’s current content rules before resuming.
