Choose by the experience you want, not by release order. Fallout: New Vegas is the best match for faction politics and role-playing choices; Fallout 4 for crafting and settlement building; and Fallout 76 for an online world you can explore alone or with others. For classic turn-based RPGs, start with Fallout or Fallout 2. Bethesda says any Fallout game can be your first, so you do not need to play them chronologically.

Choose by story and setting
For the classic West Coast: Fallout and Fallout 2
Fallout begins in 2161 in Southern California. Its water-chip mission leads the Vault Dweller beyond Vault 13 into a larger threat. Choose it if you want a compact starting point for the classic setting, character builds, dialogue choices, companions, and turn-based combat.
Fallout 2 takes place in 2241, in Northern California and parts of Oregon. As the Chosen One, you seek a G.E.C.K. to help a drought-stricken village. It is the direct sequel for players who want to continue the classic style in a broader West Coast world.
For squad combat: Fallout Tactics
Fallout Tactics shifts attention from a lone protagonist to a Brotherhood squad in the Midwest. Its real-time and turn-based combat options make it the spin-off to choose if tactical encounters matter more to you than the usual mainline role-playing structure.

For the Capital Wasteland: Fallout 3
Set in 2277 around Washington, D.C., Fallout 3 follows the Lone Wanderer out of Vault 101 in search of their father. Its ruined landmarks and choices that affect the region make it a strong pick if you want a personal quest rooted in the Capital Wasteland.
For Mojave politics: Fallout: New Vegas
In 2281, the Courier is attacked after taking a delivery job and becomes entangled in a struggle for control of the Mojave. The NCR and Caesar’s Legion are among the competing factions. Choose New Vegas if negotiating loyalties and role-playing through a regional power struggle appeal more than settlement construction.

For Boston and building: Fallout 4
Fallout 4 takes place in 2287 in the Commonwealth around Boston. The Sole Survivor wakes after cryogenic stasis and searches for family. Bethesda emphasizes crafting, settlement building, factions, companions, and Power Armor; those systems make this the clearest choice for players who want to make a home base as they explore.
For Appalachia and shared exploration: Fallout 76
Set in 2102, Fallout 76 is the earliest mainline game chronologically. It is an online multiplayer entry set in Appalachia, with events and C.A.M.P. building. Bethesda’s guide describes exploring alone or with friends, so it can suit solo play, but its online structure distinguishes it from the single-player story entries.

For managing a Vault: Fallout Shelter
Fallout Shelter focuses on Vault management and resource decisions. Pick it if you want a simulation-style spin-off rather than an exploration-led RPG; Bethesda describes it as free on several listed platforms, though current platform availability should be checked separately.
Do you need to play Fallout in chronological order?
No. Bethesda Game Studios says, “The universe of Fallout is rich and rewarding for those who love to dig deep into the lore, but any Fallout game can be your first.” The mainline fictional setting years are not release dates, and they are not a required play order:

Those years are from Bethesda’s official Fallout timeline. A chronological run would begin with Fallout 76, but choosing by preferred setting and gameplay is just as valid.
