When a game runs short on video memory (VRAM), check texture quality first if you see texture pop-in, slow texture loading, or a full texture pool. If that does not help, test ray tracing if enabled, then lower render resolution or scale. Shadows are another possibility, but their memory cost varies by game. This is a troubleshooting order, not a universal ranking: no setting has a predictable VRAM saving across all games.
Why there is no universal VRAM ranking
Graphics options affect different resources. Textures occupy memory as they are loaded and kept resident; some render buffers scale with screen resolution; ray-traced effects can use additional structures; and shadow maps vary with a game’s implementation. A setting can also demand GPU processing time without being the main cause of VRAM pressure.
How much memory an option uses—and how much lowering it frees—depends on the game, scene, resolution, and settings. For example, AMD reports peak video-memory measurements for named games tested at 4K and maximum settings, with a specified GPU and driver. Those figures describe those test conditions; they do not isolate the savings from lowering any individual option. AMD’s Radeon RX 9070 XT page is an example of why benchmark figures need their test context.
Which settings should you lower first?
- Texture quality: Start here if textures load slowly, pop in, or the game reports a full texture pool. Lower texture quality by one step and check whether streaming improves.
- Ray tracing: If it is enabled and the problem persists, lower or disable individual ray-traced effects the game exposes. Ray tracing may cover reflections, shadows, ambient occlusion, translucency, or global illumination, but the memory impact varies by implementation.
- Render resolution or scale: Try this if memory use remains high. Some screen-sized rendering resources grow with resolution, so rendering at a lower resolution or scale may reduce their demands. The trade-off is a softer or less detailed image.
- Shadow quality: Lower it if your measurements or symptoms point to shadow resources. There is no general rule that shadows should be changed before textures, ray tracing, or resolution.
After each change, re-check the same scene. If memory use and the symptom barely change, restore the option before testing another one; the setting may affect image quality or GPU workload without being the main source of VRAM pressure.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What each setting changes—and what to watch for
| Setting | Why it can affect VRAM | When to test it | Likely visual trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Texture quality | Higher-detail texture data needs memory when loaded and kept available. The effect depends on the game’s texture pool and streaming system. | Texture pop-in, slow texture loading, or a texture-pool warning. | Less fine surface detail, especially at close range. |
| Ray tracing | Ray-traced effects and their supporting structures can consume memory; the exact cost varies by effect and game. | Ray tracing is enabled and pressure continues after checking textures. | Less accurate or detailed reflections, shadows, ambient occlusion, translucency, or lighting, depending on what the game lets you change. |
| Render resolution or scale | Some rendering resources, such as the G-buffer, scale with screen resolution. | Memory use remains high after testing texture and ray-tracing options. | A softer or less detailed image; upscaling may change the result. |
| Shadow quality | Shadow maps are one quality-dependent resource; their implementation and cost differ between games. | Measurements suggest shadows are contributing, or a game-specific guide recommends changing them. | Lower-resolution or less detailed shadows. |
How to test settings without guessing
- Choose a repeatable scene where the problem occurs. Keep the game, scene, resolution, and other graphics settings the same for each comparison.
- Note the game’s reported memory use or texture-pool status, if available. A monitoring tool can provide another view, but it is optional.
- Change just one setting by one step, then replay the scene and compare both the symptom and memory reading.
- Keep the change only if it helps enough to justify the visual trade-off. Otherwise, restore it and test the next option in the order above.
Memory readings can be useful evidence, but a lower number is not automatically a better experience. The practical goal is to resolve the problem—such as texture pop-in—while preserving the image quality you want.
Why texture quality is a first check, not a guaranteed fix
Texture quality is a useful first test when the symptom is texture-related, but lowering it does not always free a noticeable amount of VRAM. Unreal Engine explains that if full-resolution mipmaps already fit within its texture pool, changing texture quality from high to low may make little difference beyond filtering. Games also manage texture streaming differently. Unreal Engine’s texture-streaming documentation describes how the texture pool affects what is loaded. NVIDIA’s Control graphics and performance guide recommends lowering texture resolution when textures take too long to stream.

When a setting change is not enough
If the problem persists after testing relevant settings, look for game-specific guidance and confirm the scene and resolution where it occurs. These settings are a starting sequence, not proof that a particular component is inadequate: the available measurements do not establish a universal VRAM threshold or a card recommendation. Consider hardware only after identifying a persistent, game-specific memory limit and weighing an upgrade against your budget.
