Which Is Better for Gaming: Fullscreen or Windowed Fullscreen?

Borderless fullscreen is the best starting point for most modern Windows 11 games, but exclusive fullscreen can still help with latency or game-specific problems.

For most modern games on Windows 11, windowed fullscreen (borderless) is the better default: it makes Alt-Tabbing and multi-monitor use easier, and compatible games can perform much like exclusive fullscreen. If you are chasing the lowest possible latency or a game has stutter, HDR, VRR, resolution, or compatibility problems, test exclusive fullscreen too. The game’s presentation method matters more than the label in its settings menu.

What do fullscreen and windowed fullscreen mean?

Exclusive fullscreen

In exclusive fullscreen, a game takes control of display output rather than behaving like an ordinary desktop window. That can give a game a more direct presentation path, and has traditionally been associated with lower latency. But Windows may apply Fullscreen Optimizations to some games, running them through an optimized borderless-style path while retaining fullscreen-like behavior. A menu label alone does not always reveal what is happening underneath. Microsoft explains Fullscreen Optimizations.

Windowed fullscreen or borderless

Borderless fills the monitor without visible window borders, while remaining a desktop window. It typically uses the desktop’s display mode, so switching to other apps is easier. Its performance depends on how the game presents frames: a modern flip-model path can behave very differently from older windowed presentation that relies more heavily on desktop composition.

Ordinary windowed mode

Ordinary windowed mode shows the game in a resizable window. It is not the main comparison here, but can help diagnose scaling, resolution, or multi-monitor problems.

Does fullscreen give you more FPS?

Not as a universal rule. Older windowed presentation could add work for Windows’ Desktop Window Manager, but modern flip-model presentation can reduce copying and composition overhead. Microsoft says flip-model presentation can improve performance and power use; depending on the game and system, borderless performance can be close to or better than classic exclusive fullscreen. Microsoft’s flip-model guidance describes paths including DirectFlip and Independent Flip, which can let a windowed game present more directly to the display.

Windows 11’s Optimizations for windowed games feature can move compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games in windowed or borderless mode from the older blit model to flip-model presentation. Microsoft says the feature can reduce frame latency and enable Auto HDR and variable refresh rate in supported situations. It does not guarantee identical performance in every game. Microsoft’s feature documentation sets out its supported scope.

  • Modern game and presentation path: average FPS may be effectively the same in either mode.
  • Older title or legacy path: exclusive fullscreen may perform or pace frames better.
  • Hybrid-GPU laptop, high resolution, or very high refresh rate: presentation overhead may be easier to notice.
  • Game-specific issues: average FPS may look similar while frame-time consistency, stutter, or refresh behavior differs.

FPS is only one measure. Compare average FPS alongside 1% lows or a frame-time graph, and pay attention to stutter, render latency, and what happens when the game loses focus.

Which mode has lower input latency?

Exclusive fullscreen is worth testing if you are optimizing for the lowest possible latency. NVIDIA’s system-latency guidance recommends exclusive fullscreen where possible, based on its testing, while acknowledging that borderless latency has improved in recent Windows updates. That is NVIDIA’s recommendation, not a universal result for every game, graphics card, driver, and Windows configuration. NVIDIA’s latency guide also discusses settings such as Reflex, V-Sync, and G-SYNC.

Borderless is not automatically slow. Flip-model paths such as Independent Flip can reduce or avoid ordinary desktop composition; Microsoft says latency can reach approximately one frame on recent Windows versions under Independent Flip, with fallback behavior when that path is unavailable. The actual result depends on the game and presentation path. A stable frame-time pattern may also feel more responsive than a small difference in average latency.

There is no reliable, universal millisecond difference to apply to every game. If the game exposes a latency metric, use it alongside frame-time data. NVIDIA’s FrameView guide explains frame-rate, frame-time, and rendering/present-latency terminology.

Why borderless is easier for everyday play

Windowed fullscreen generally makes Alt-Tabbing faster and less disruptive. Exclusive mode may trigger a display-mode transition, briefly blank the screen, resize other windows, or take longer to switch. Flip-model borderless windows are one reason the convenience gap can remain even when game performance is similar. Microsoft’s presentation guidance covers these trade-offs.

  • Use borderless for frequent switching to a browser, Discord, or another app.
  • It is usually more convenient for streaming, recording, capture overlays, and hardware-stat overlays.
  • On multiple monitors, it is generally easier to move between the game and other windows without a display-mode transition.
  • Capture and overlay compatibility is software-specific; exclusive fullscreen is not impossible to capture, but borderless is often the lower-friction option.

Try exclusive fullscreen if the game loses focus, mishandles the cursor, stutters when another display is active, or behaves better with an overlay in that mode. Multi-monitor behavior and feature support vary by configuration; NVIDIA’s multi-monitor guidance discusses some related settings.

HDR, G-SYNC, FreeSync, and VRR

Borderless can support HDR and variable refresh rate (VRR), but compatibility depends on the game, graphics API, Windows build, driver, monitor, and presentation path. Windows 11’s windowed-game optimizations can enable Auto HDR and VRR for compatible games and displays; that does not mean every borderless title will use either feature correctly. Microsoft explains its windowed-game feature here, and its graphics settings documentation covers VRR terminology and configuration here.

Before blaming the display mode, check that VRR is enabled in the monitor’s on-screen menu and in the relevant Windows or graphics-driver settings. Confirm that the game’s frame rate is within the monitor’s VRR range, and that V-Sync and any frame-rate cap are configured as intended. A second display or an overlay can complicate diagnosis. G-SYNC and FreeSync are not limited to exclusive fullscreen on many current systems, but support is not guaranteed for every game or setup.

HDR also varies by game. Some titles implement HDR themselves; others can use Windows Auto HDR, and some require Windows HDR to be enabled before launch. Test the game’s HDR calibration screen in the mode you intend to use. If brightness or color looks wrong, try the other display mode, confirm the monitor’s HDR setting, and rerun the game’s calibration.

Resolution and image quality are not the same as display mode

Exclusive fullscreen historically made it easier for a game to change the display’s output resolution or refresh rate. Borderless usually follows the desktop mode, but that does not inherently reduce image quality. Many games let you set internal render resolution, resolution scale, dynamic resolution, or an upscaler independently of output resolution. If you want a lower rendering resolution, look for those controls before switching modes.

Scaling can still cause trouble: a game may detect Windows display scaling incorrectly, render borderless at an unexpected size, or upscale a lower image poorly. A desktop/game refresh-rate mismatch can also cause problems. If the picture looks blurry or the refresh rate is wrong, check the game’s render-resolution and refresh settings, Windows’ display settings, and then compare exclusive fullscreen.

Enable Windows 11 Optimizations for windowed games

The setting is intended for compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games running windowed or borderless; DX12 and Vulkan titles have their own presentation paths and may already use modern behavior. Compatibility still varies by game, driver, display, and overlays. Microsoft notes that the game must be restarted after changing the setting. See Microsoft’s current instructions.

  1. Open Start → Settings → System → Display → Graphics.
  2. Under default settings, turn on Optimizations for windowed games.
  3. Restart the game before comparing modes.

To change the option for one title, open Settings → System → Display → Graphics, select the game, choose Options, adjust Optimizations for windowed games, select Save, and restart that game. Microsoft notes that enabling Auto HDR automatically enables the windowed-game optimization; to turn the optimization off globally, disable Auto HDR first.

Choose a mode for your situation

Situation Mode to try first Why
General gaming on Windows 11 Windowed fullscreen Good convenience, with modern presentation paths often delivering fullscreen-like performance.
Competitive play where every millisecond matters Test exclusive fullscreen NVIDIA recommends it where possible for lowest latency; verify the result in your game.
Frequent Alt-Tabbing, streaming, or second-monitor use Windowed fullscreen Usually easier to switch, capture, and use other windows.
HDR or VRR fails in borderless Try exclusive fullscreen Some games or configurations behave differently by mode.
Older game or one with stutter, scaling, or refresh problems Test both Legacy presentation paths and game-specific behavior can change the result.
Modern DX12 game with no display-mode problems Usually windowed fullscreen Keep the convenience unless testing shows a reason to switch.

Compare the modes on your own PC

A fair test changes only the display mode. Use the same game scene, graphics settings, resolution, refresh rate, frame limiter, V-Sync, and upscaler. Restart the game after each change, especially when testing Windows 11’s windowed-game setting.

  1. Choose a repeatable benchmark, replay, or scene—not a different gameplay section for each run.
  2. Test one mode, then the other, with the same settings and the same overlays you normally use.
  3. Record average FPS, 1% lows or frame-time graph, GPU utilization, refresh rate, and any in-game latency reading.
  4. Check Alt-Tab behavior, HDR calibration, VRR engagement, and whether the frame-rate cap behaves consistently.
  5. If results are inconsistent, repeat the comparison with overlays disabled, then restore them to check your usual setup.

FrameView documentation describes useful frame-rate and latency measures; its numbers should be interpreted in the context of the game and system being tested. NVIDIA FrameView User Guide 1.1 and the FrameView 1.7 guide provide metric definitions. A tiny FPS difference with identical frame pacing may not justify losing borderless convenience; repeated stutter or worse frame pacing is more meaningful than a barely changed average.

Troubleshoot problems by symptom

Borderless FPS is unexpectedly low

  • For a compatible DX10/DX11 game on Windows 11, enable Optimizations for windowed games and restart.
  • Temporarily disable overlays to check whether one is changing presentation behavior.
  • Confirm the desktop refresh rate and compare the game’s internal render resolution, not just output resolution.
  • On a hybrid-GPU laptop or multi-monitor setup, test exclusive fullscreen as a comparison.

Borderless feels less responsive or stutters

  • Test exclusive fullscreen with the same V-Sync, VRR, and frame limiter settings.
  • Use an in-game latency metric if available and compare frame-time consistency, not only subjective feel.
  • Disable overlays or capture tools temporarily to isolate their effect.

VRR does not engage

  • Check monitor VRR and relevant Windows or driver settings.
  • Confirm the game is focused and running within the display’s VRR range.
  • Check whether another display or overlay is interfering, then compare exclusive fullscreen.

HDR looks washed out or too dark

  • Confirm Windows HDR and the monitor’s HDR mode are set as intended before launching.
  • Compare native in-game HDR with Auto HDR where applicable.
  • Rerun the game’s HDR calibration, and test exclusive fullscreen if the issue remains.

The game changes resolution, minimizes, or loses focus

Older games may mishandle either mode on a modern multi-monitor desktop. Try the game’s native borderless option, a different refresh rate, or the other display mode. Use compatibility settings cautiously, and avoid undocumented launch parameters unless the game developer documents them.
