What does “class” mean in Nightreign?
Players commonly use “class” to ask which character to pick, and PlayStation uses the term in its chooser headline. In the game’s official framing, however, these are Nightfarers: distinct playable characters with individual abilities and playstyles, rather than a conventional class system. Bandai Namco describes each as having three unique capacities: a passive ability, a character skill and an ultimate art. Bandai Namco’s character-selection guide introduces the original eight; its DLC announcement adds Scholar and Undertaker.

Which Nightfarer should you play?
Start with the kind of contribution you want to make. The official guide characterizes Wylder as balanced and approachable, Guardian as defensively capable, and Recluse as focused on magic. Those are broad descriptions, not a ranking of current strength. Relics also affect playstyle, so character choice is one part of a build rather than the whole decision. PlayStation’s Nightreign guide notes both character progression and relics.
Choose Wylder for a balanced, flexible approach
Bandai Namco describes Wylder as well-balanced and easy to handle, while noting that his abilities can make him challenging to master. His Claw Shot pulls foes into range and can help with movement; Onslaught Stake launches an explosive iron stake. Consider him if you want a broadly approachable starting point with tools for closing distance and attacking.

Choose Guardian for a defensive approach
Official descriptions emphasize Guardian’s high defensive capability and shield use. Whirlwind creates a wind-churning cyclone, while Wings of Salvation is a leap and dive used to protect an area. He is the clearest fit among these examples for players who want to emphasize defense and area protection.
Choose Recluse for cursed magic
Recluse is described as skilled in cursed magic. Her Magic Cocktail combines affinity residues collected from targets into a magic attack. That makes her a natural choice if you want a magic-focused playstyle built around using what is gathered from enemies.
Consider Scholar or Undertaker if you have the DLC
Scholar and Undertaker are the two characters added in The Forsaken Hollows. The official gameplay guide presents Scholar as an academic who benefits from observing the battlefield, and Undertaker as an abbess mandated to slay the Nightlord. Those descriptions establish their themes, but do not provide a complete ability-by-ability comparison with the rest of the roster.

Who is in the Nightreign roster?
The official selection guide describes eight Nightfarers: Wylder, Guardian, Recluse, Ironeye, Duchess, Raider, Executor and Revenant. Bandai Namco’s later DLC announcement identifies Scholar and Undertaker as two additional playable characters in The Forsaken Hollows. Together, those sources support a ten-character roster including the DLC.
Are any Nightfarers locked behind progression?
Yes. PlayStation identifies Duchess and Revenant as characters unlocked through game progression. The source does not specify the exact current unlock steps, so check the in-game requirements rather than relying on an unsourced step-by-step list.
How to make the choice
- Pick your broad approach. For a balanced starting point, consider Wylder; for defense, Guardian; for cursed magic, Recluse.
