Which Nintendo Switch Should You Buy for Breath of the Wild?

For Breath of the Wild on a TV, choose the standard Switch or OLED. Here’s how screen, storage, handheld-only play, battery estimates and Nintendo’s listed U.S. prices compare.

For The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild on a TV, choose the standard Nintendo Switch or the Nintendo Switch – OLED Model. The OLED is the screen-and-storage upgrade; the standard model is the lower-priced TV-play option. Choose Nintendo Switch Lite only if you want handheld-only play: Nintendo lists Breath of the Wild as compatible, but Lite has no TV mode.

Compare the Switch models for Breath of the Wild

The figures below are Nintendo’s U.S. advertised prices and official specifications, accessed October 7, 2026. Prices are not a guarantee of what a retailer currently charges; check the seller’s listing, condition, and bundle contents before buying.

Model Best fit Play modes Screen and built-in storage Nintendo advertised U.S. price
Nintendo Switch – OLED Model You want TV play and the largest built-in screen TV, tabletop, handheld 7-inch OLED; 64GB $399.99
Nintendo Switch You want TV play at a lower listed price TV, tabletop, handheld 6.2-inch LCD; 32GB $339.99
Nintendo Switch Lite You want a handheld-only system Handheld 5.5-inch LCD; 32GB $229.99

Nintendo’s comparison page lists battery ranges of approximately 4.5–9 hours for the OLED and standard models, and 3–7 hours for Lite. For Breath of the Wild specifically, Nintendo estimates about 5.5 hours on the OLED and standard Switch, and about 4 hours on Lite. These are manufacturer estimates, not guaranteed play-session lengths; actual duration varies with the game and conditions. Nintendo Switch model comparison

Is the OLED model worth it for Breath of the Wild?

Choose the OLED if you value a larger built-in screen for handheld play or want twice the built-in storage of the standard model. Both can play on a TV, and Nintendo’s cited specifications do not establish a Breath of the Wild frame-rate or performance advantage for OLED. Its documented differences are the display and storage, not a game-performance upgrade. Nintendo’s comparison

#1 Best Overall
Nintendo Switch 2 System
  • The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
  • One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
  • Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
  • Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
  • GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play

If the price difference matters more than those upgrades, the standard Switch still gives you TV, tabletop, and handheld play. Nintendo’s product page listed the OLED at $399.99 and the standard model at $339.99; its page notes that actual prices may vary. Nintendo Switch models and pricing

Can you play Breath of the Wild on Switch Lite?

Yes. Nintendo names Breath of the Wild on the Switch Lite product page and says Lite can play Switch games that support handheld mode. But Lite is designed for handheld play and does not connect to a TV. Nintendo describes it as “a compact, lightweight Nintendo Switch system dedicated to handheld play.” Nintendo Switch Lite

What to check before you buy

  1. Decide whether TV play matters. If it does, compare the standard Switch and OLED; Lite is handheld-only.
  2. Choose between OLED and standard by screen, storage, and price. OLED has a 7-inch screen and 64GB built-in storage; standard Switch has a 6.2-inch screen and 32GB.
  3. Confirm game compatibility if buying Lite. Check the packaging or eShop for handheld-mode support, and whether the game’s features need separate controllers.
  4. Verify the exact offer. Check current price, seller, condition, model, included items, and return terms. Nintendo’s advertised U.S. prices can differ from retail offers.

A microSDXC card can add storage, while a carrying case or screen protector may suit a portable setup. These are optional—not requirements for playing Breath of the Wild. Confirm an accessory is compatible with your exact console model before ordering. Nintendo Switch accessories
