Which OBS Studio Version Is Stable for a Long-Running YouTube Playlist Stream?

Use the latest stable OBS release that fits your setup, verify VLC and encoder compatibility, and test your playlist before a long YouTube broadcast.

Use the latest stable OBS Studio release listed on the official download page, not a beta or release candidate, and test your exact playlist and stream setup before a long broadcast. As of October 3, 2026, OBS listed version 32.2.2, dated August 14, as its latest release. That is a current-version recommendation—not a guarantee that OBS will run without interruption on every computer or network.

Why the latest stable release is the practical choice

OBS does not publish a controlled reliability ranking showing which version is most stable for long-running YouTube playlist streams. The available official material also does not establish a universal uptime guarantee across OBS, your operating system, hardware, plugins, media files, and network. The sound choice is therefore the newest stable release compatible with your setup, followed by a representative test—not a claim that any version cannot crash.

OBS’s June 23, 2026 beta announcement says beta builds may contain bugs or broken functionality and recommends the latest stable build for production use. Use beta or release-candidate versions only when you intend to test them, not for a broadcast where continuity matters.

Check compatibility before updating

NVIDIA NVENC users

The OBS 32.2 release notes, dated July 21, 2026, say its NVIDIA SDK was updated to version 13 and the minimum supported driver for NVENC users is now 570. This requirement applies to that NVIDIA encoder path; it is not a general requirement for every OBS user or encoder. Before upgrading, check the release notes for the operating system, encoder, and drivers you actually use.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

VLC and plugins

If your playlist uses OBS’s VLC Video source, install VLC and match its architecture to OBS: 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. Check that any plugins you depend on work with the OBS version you plan to install. OBS’s official documentation identifies VLC Video as its playlist source, with Loop Playlist enabled by default and Shuffle Playlist disabled by default.

Set up and test a playlist stream

  1. Install the stable build. Download the current stable release from the official OBS download page. Review its release notes for changes affecting your operating system, encoder, drivers, or sources.
  2. Confirm the playlist source. In OBS, add a VLC Video source to the scene you intend to broadcast and select the playlist files. If VLC Video is unavailable, install VLC with the same architecture as OBS, then reopen OBS.
  3. Check playlist behavior. In the VLC Video source properties, verify that Loop Playlist is enabled if you want playback to continue from the beginning after the final item. Leave Shuffle Playlist off if sequence matters. Although looping is on by default and shuffle off by default, check the actual source settings rather than assuming defaults have not changed.
  4. Configure and verify the stream. Set up YouTube streaming in OBS using your YouTube stream key, and confirm the selected encoder and stream settings are suitable for your connection and hardware. Keep the key private. OBS’s general overview recommends testing stream settings, scenes, and performance before going live; its cited guidance does not promise that reconnecting will preserve every broadcast or playlist state.
  5. Run a representative test. Start a test stream with the same playlist, scenes, encoder, and network you plan to use. Observe whether playback advances and loops as intended, and whether your system and connection remain stable. A short test can catch setup errors, but it cannot prove uninterrupted performance over a much longer run.
  6. Review reconnect behavior. OBS supports automatic reconnect configuration in Advanced settings. Check those settings before the broadcast and monitor a test stream so you understand what happens if the connection drops. Reconnect support is not a YouTube-specific guarantee that every interruption will be invisible or that playlist state will always be preserved.

What release history does—and does not—tell you

OBS 29.1 included a fix for a media-source crash involving video whose resolution changes frequently, such as a VLC playlist, and a separate fix for a crash involving streams in the media source. These fixes show that source-related problems have been addressed over time; they do not establish a present-day crash rate or prove that a particular version is stable for every long session.

When deciding whether to update an already-working setup, compare stable versus beta status, compatibility with your platform and encoder, VLC and plugin compatibility, relevant release-note fixes, and the results of a test using your own media. Release recency by itself is not a measured reliability ranking.

Troubleshoot common long-run risks

  • VLC Video is missing: Install VLC and make sure its architecture matches OBS; 64-bit OBS needs 64-bit VLC.
  • The playlist stops at the last item: Open the VLC Video source properties and check Loop Playlist.
  • The playlist plays in the wrong order: Check Shuffle Playlist and the playlist order in the source properties.
  • OBS reports an NVENC or driver compatibility problem: For OBS 32.2’s updated NVIDIA SDK/NVENC path, the release notes specify driver 570 or newer. Check the notes for your exact version and encoder rather than applying this NVIDIA condition to other setups.
  • The stream disconnects: Review OBS’s automatic reconnect settings under Advanced and inspect the network and YouTube stream status. Reconnect can help recover a connection, but it is not an uptime guarantee.
  • A media source crashes or behaves differently between clips: Test the actual playlist and media files with the intended OBS release. OBS has fixed some historical media-source crash cases, but the cited fixes do not predict how every file or source combination will behave.
