For the broadest access to current Naughty Dog games on PlayStation, choose a PS5. Sony’s PS5 backward-compatibility guidance says the console supports the “overwhelming majority” of PS4 games, not every PS4 title or feature. The cited Naughty Dog examples are supported, but Sony’s pages do not establish compatibility for every historical game in the studio’s catalog.
What is the difference between The Last of Us Part II editions?
The Last of Us Part II on PS4
This is the PS4 release. It can be played on PS5 through backward compatibility. Installing patch 1.08 adds a performance option with a 30 or 60 fps target; that is a target setting, not a promise that every scene will maintain a particular frame rate. See Sony’s PS5 performance-patch details.
The Last of Us Part II Remastered
This is a separate PS5 edition with visual enhancements and additional modes, rather than simply the PS4 game running through backward compatibility. Sony also lists it for PC and describes a paid upgrade path from the PS4 version. If your PS4 copy is on disc, you need a disc-drive PS5 to use the disc-based upgrade; check the official upgrade instructions for current local terms.

Is The Last of Us Part I an upgrade for an older console?
No. The Last of Us Part I is a ground-up PS5 remake, not an upgrade of the PS3 or PS4 game. Sony says there is no upgrade path from those earlier versions. It is also listed for PC. See the official The Last of Us Part I page.
Do you need a disc-drive PS5 for PS4 games?
Not for every kind of PS4 game: digital games can be played on a compatible disc-free PS5. But if you own a PS4 game on disc, you need a PS5 with a disc drive to use that copy. Disc-drive access also matters for certain upgrades.

For example, Sony’s upgrade instructions for UNCHARTED: Legacy of Thieves Collection say that a PS4 disc owner must insert the disc to download or play the PS5 digital version. A disc-free PS5 cannot claim that discounted upgrade using a PS4 disc. The collection brings together the single-player campaigns from Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End and Uncharted: The Lost Legacy.
Can a PS5 play The Last of Us Remastered?
Yes. The Last of Us Remastered is a PS4 release and is listed by Sony as playable on PS5. Sony cautions that some PS4 features may be absent when playing backward-compatible games. Check the official The Last of Us Remastered page for its compatibility listing.
