Get the 512GB Steam Deck OLED if you want the best overall Steam Deck. Choose the 1TB OLED only if you need more built-in storage or specifically want its etched anti-glare glass. Buy a 256GB LCD—or an older 64GB, 256GB, or 512GB LCD—only when the price is substantially lower, or when it is a suitably covered refurbished or used unit.
There is an important 2026 price caveat: Valve lists the current U.S. OLED prices as $789 for 512GB and $949 for 1TB, following a May 27, 2026 price increase. The official comparison page’s presentation of the 256GB LCD does not clearly establish a current new U.S. LCD selling price, so check live availability and checkout pricing before buying.

Valve’s official comparison page is the best place to confirm specifications. Storage capacity is not a performance tier: the 512GB and 1TB OLED models use the same broad hardware platform and should deliver essentially the same gaming performance.
My recommendation
- 512GB OLED: the best overall experience and the sensible default if you can afford the current price.
- 1TB OLED: worthwhile for a large permanently installed library, frequent travel, or etched anti-glare glass—not for higher frame rates.
- Discounted or Certified Refurbished LCD: the value choice when the saving is large enough.
- Used LCD: acceptable only after a careful inspection and with a meaningful discount.
Do not pay near-OLED money for an LCD. At current OLED pricing, however, “best” and “best value” are no longer automatically the same conclusion.

512GB OLED versus 1TB OLED
The two OLED models share the same 7.4-inch 1280×800 HDR display, 90Hz maximum refresh rate, 6nm APU, 50Wh battery, Wi-Fi 6E, and advertised 3–12-hour battery range. The 1TB model is not a faster Steam Deck.
The extra money primarily buys:
- Twice the internal storage.
- Premium anti-glare etched glass.
- An upgraded carrying case with a removable liner.
- Cosmetic SteamOS extras.
Choose the 512GB OLED if you are comfortable using a microSD card or rotating games. It is particularly sensible for indie games, older games, emulation, cloud gaming, and a normal-sized installed rotation.
Choose the 1TB OLED if you travel frequently, share the device with family, keep several large AAA games installed, dislike swapping storage, or specifically want the etched display. The etched finish can reduce reflections, but screen visibility still depends on brightness, lighting, viewing angle, and the environment. Do not buy it expecting better FPS.
OLED versus LCD: what actually changes?
Display
The OLED is the most noticeable upgrade. Its screen is slightly larger—7.4 inches versus 7 inches—while both retain the same 1280×800 resolution. OLED provides much deeper blacks, higher contrast, richer color, HDR support, and a refresh rate of up to 90Hz rather than 60Hz. Motion can look clearer, and the display makes the Deck feel considerably more modern even when the game’s frame rate is unchanged.
The 1TB OLED has etched anti-glare glass as standard. The 512GB OLED does not have that same premium finish, so buyers who play outdoors or near bright windows may prefer the 1TB model. Neither screen makes every game bright or readable in direct sunlight.
Battery and efficiency
The LCD has a 40Wh battery and Valve’s advertised play-time range is 2–8 hours. The OLED has a 50Wh battery and an advertised 3–12-hour range. Valve describes the OLED as offering 30–50% more battery life, but those figures are not guarantees.
Actual runtime depends on the game, frame-rate limit, brightness, refresh rate, power limit, wireless activity, and other settings. A demanding AAA game can drain either model much faster than a lightweight 2D game. The OLED’s advantage is meaningful, but it does not make charging irrelevant.

The OLED uses a revised 6nm APU rather than the LCD’s 7nm APU. It also has faster memory, an improved thermal module, Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3, a 180Hz touchscreen polling rate, improved haptics, speakers, microphones, sticks, buttons, and trackpads. It weighs roughly 30 grams less.
These changes improve efficiency, thermals, acoustics, wireless performance, and general responsiveness. They do not turn the Deck into a substantially more powerful handheld. Expect a better experience, not a generational FPS increase.

Is 512GB enough?
For most owners, yes. A 512GB Deck leaves a practical amount of room for a rotating library, particularly if you install smaller games internally and use a microSD card for larger collections.
Remember that usable space is also consumed by:
- Game installations and updates.
- Shader caches and Proton compatibility data.
- Mods, screenshots, and non-Steam software.
- Desktop applications and other user files.
Modern AAA games can occupy a large portion of the drive, but you do not need your entire Steam library installed at once. A microSD card is supported on every Steam Deck model, and games stored on it appear in the Steam library. Valve also documents booting an operating system from microSD and multi-boot support in its FAQ.

Valve’s repair-parts partner is iFixit. Treat an SSD upgrade as an optional technical project—not as a reason to buy the smallest model automatically.
Should you buy an LCD in 2026?
An LCD still makes sense when it is meaningfully cheaper than an OLED. It remains the same basic SteamOS experience, with the same general controls, trackpads, gyro, back buttons, and software ecosystem. It can be perfectly adequate for indoor play, docked gaming, older games, emulation, and buyers who care more about ergonomics than display quality.
The LCD is a poor purchase when its price approaches an OLED. Its screen is smaller, slower, lower-contrast, and less capable in bright environments; its battery is smaller; and older units may have substantial battery wear.
The old 64GB LCD deserves extra caution. Its original eMMC storage is slower and much smaller than the NVMe drives in later configurations. It can be a cheap route into SteamOS if an SSD upgrade is already part of your plan, but it is usually a poor choice at a price that does not reflect its age and upgrade needs.

New, Certified Refurbished, or used?
New
A new Valve unit is the lowest-risk purchase when you need a specific model, current warranty coverage, and a predictable return process. Buy through the official Steam Deck store page and confirm the final price and availability before checkout.
Valve Certified Refurbished
Certified Refurbished inventory can be one of the strongest value options, especially for an LCD or a discounted OLED. Stock, model selection, coverage, and pricing change, so confirm the current listing’s warranty and return terms rather than assuming every refurbished unit has identical conditions.
Used
A used Deck can be excellent value, but the discount must compensate for battery aging and the absence of the same purchase protections as a new unit. Prefer a seller with a return window or platform protection.

Before buying, confirm:
- The exact model and internal storage capacity.
- Battery health in Desktop Mode.
- Every button, trigger, stick, trackpad, touchscreen, speaker, microphone, USB-C port, headphone jack, Wi-Fi connection, Bluetooth connection, and microSD slot.
- That the screen has no dead pixels, severe pressure marks, or unusual discoloration.
- That the included charger is present and supplies the correct power.
- There is no liquid damage, shell gap, stripped screw, or suspicious unauthorized repair.
- Whether the SSD has been replaced and by whom.
Do not buy an old LCD with an unknown battery history merely because its storage number looks attractive.

Which Steam Deck is right for your use case?
Best overall
512GB OLED. It combines the best screen, battery behavior, wireless hardware, weight, and refinements without charging the 1TB model’s premium for storage you may not need.
Best for a large library
1TB OLED if you want many large games installed internally. Otherwise, buy the 512GB OLED and add microSD storage. The latter is usually the more flexible answer for a rotating Steam library.
Best for travel
OLED. Its lower weight, longer advertised battery range, better screen, and faster wireless are useful on the move. Pick 1TB if you regularly travel without reliable internet or dislike managing cards.
Best for outdoor use
1TB OLED if glare reduction is a priority. The 512GB OLED is still a major display upgrade over the LCD, but the etched finish is the OLED option specifically designed for buyers who prefer it.

A discounted LCD can be enough. Once connected to a larger display, the built-in screen matters less. Docking does not increase frame rates; Valve describes the Docking Station more like connecting a USB-C hub. The official Docking Station is listed at Steam, although a compatible third-party hub may suit a basic setup.
Best for indie games, emulation, and older titles
Discounted or refurbished LCD if the price is low enough. These use cases often place less pressure on battery life and display quality, though the OLED remains nicer to use.
Best for children or family sharing
512GB OLED is the easy recommendation if the budget allows. Choose 1TB when several people will keep different large games installed. A refurbished LCD can be sensible when cost and the risk of accidental damage matter more than screen quality.
Best for competitive games
The OLED’s 90Hz display and better motion characteristics are preferable, but the Deck is not a maximum-performance competitive gaming machine. Check each game’s controls, frame rate, anti-cheat support, and Steam Deck compatibility before buying.

Best for Windows, Game Pass, or non-Steam launchers
Do not choose a Steam Deck solely for this requirement. Windows can be installed because the Deck is a PC, but the experience is less console-like than SteamOS and support details can change. Buyers who require native Game Pass integration, a Windows-first workflow, or games using unsupported anti-cheat should consider a current Windows handheld after comparing its price, battery behavior, display, ergonomics, and software—not just its processor name.
Game compatibility matters more than the storage label
Steam Deck runs SteamOS, a Linux-based PC operating system, rather than a console operating system with universal compatibility. Steam’s Deck Verified system is a useful starting point:
- Verified: Valve’s checks indicate the game should work well on Deck.
- Playable: It may require configuration or manual input adjustments.
- Unsupported: Valve’s checks identify a significant problem, though circumstances can change.
- Untested: Valve has not completed the relevant checks.
Proton, game patches, launchers, DRM, mods, and multiplayer anti-cheat systems can change compatibility. A game marked Verified is not a guarantee of a perfect experience forever, and an Untested game is not automatically impossible. Check the specific games you care about before purchasing.
When not to buy a Steam Deck
Choose something else—or wait—if you require:
- Maximum FPS rather than a console-like handheld experience.
- Native Game Pass and broad Windows software compatibility.
- Reliable support for games using incompatible anti-cheat systems.
- PC VR. Valve says the Deck is not optimized for PC VR.
- An external GPU. Valve says external GPUs are not supported.
- High-resolution external-monitor gaming as the primary purpose.
- A device that never requires compatibility checks or PC-style troubleshooting.
The Deck is compelling because SteamOS offers a console-like interface, suspend/resume, strong Steam integration, desktop mode, excellent ergonomics, trackpads, gyro controls, back buttons, repairability, and storage upgrade options. Those strengths matter more than a small specification advantage on a competing device for many Steam-focused buyers.
Final verdict
Buy the 512GB Steam Deck OLED for the best overall Steam Deck. It is technically the superior model, but its current $789 U.S. price means it is not automatically the best bargain.
Buy the 1TB OLED for built-in storage, frequent travel, family sharing, or etched anti-glare glass. Do not buy it for faster performance.
Buy an LCD only when it is substantially cheaper, Certified Refurbished with suitable coverage, or used from a trustworthy seller with verified battery health. At near-OLED pricing, it is the wrong value.
Finally, if you need Windows-first compatibility, maximum performance, PC VR, or an external GPU, the better decision may be not to buy a Steam Deck at all.
