It is a dedicated film service with a rotating selection of classics, exclusive original programming and extensive supplements. But “studio-backed originals” is a separate question: the available evidence does not establish one service as the best for both classic films and studio-produced streaming originals.
Why Criterion Channel leads for classic movies
Criterion Channel describes its catalog as a rotating mix of films from Criterion and Janus, plus titles licensed from studios and independent distributors. It also offers thematic programming, exclusive originals and supplementary features. The service reports that it is currently streaming more than 3,000 films and exclusive content, including more than 500 shorts and 5,000 supplementary features. Those are Criterion-published figures, not independently audited counts. Criterion Channel FAQ
There is an important distinction between Criterion’s collection and the Channel’s catalog: not every Criterion Collection release is available to stream. Because titles rotate, look up a specific film on the service before subscribing.
U.S. subscription details
Criterion lists its U.S. subscription at $10.99 USD per month or $99.99 USD per year, with a seven-day trial. The service is available in the U.S. and Canada. Prices, trial terms and availability can change, so confirm them on Criterion’s current FAQ before signing up. Criterion Channel FAQ

| Netflix | Its U.S. Classic Movies page currently surfaces older films, including Psycho, The Guns of Navarone and Lawrence of Arabia: Restored Version. Classic films and studio-backed originals are different criteria
A service can carry studio-licensed classics without producing its own originals, and an original made for a streaming service is not necessarily a classic film. Criterion’s FAQ supports its claims about a mix of licensed films and exclusive programming, but it does not establish that its originals meet every viewer’s meaning of “studio-backed.” Netflix’s classic category similarly shows that older films are available, not that it has a deeper curated catalog or a particular original slate.
Max’s TCM hub is a relevant option to investigate if the goal is classic studio cinema within a larger service. The available announcement points to a U.S. expansion in 2025, but does not support a current service-wide winner for studio-backed originals or a current comparison of Max’s plans. Check each service’s present catalog and originals separately rather than treating ownership, licensing and exclusivity as interchangeable.

Choose based on the film and the kind of original you want
- Choose Criterion Channel if curated classic-film programming and supplements matter most. Check whether the exact film you want is currently streaming.
- Check Netflix if you want a broad service that also has a changing selection of older films, and compare its current U.S. plan prices before subscribing.
- Investigate Max’s TCM hub if you want a mainstream service with a classic-film hub, but verify its current catalog, subscription terms and original programming directly.
- Define “studio-backed original” first. If you mean an exclusive made for a particular streamer, check that service’s current originals; if you mean films from a major studio, check licensing and availability title by title.
For a film you cannot find on a streaming service, a physical edition may be an alternative. Criterion says it publishes DVD, Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD editions, but the exact film and format need to be confirmed individually. Criterion Collection shop
