Buy the entitlement for the race or Legendary Lord you want to play. Owning Total War: WARHAMMER III grants access to Immortal Empires and the game’s launch races and Lords; since September 2026, any Lords of the End Times character pack also grants Immortal Empires access, even if you own none of the trilogy’s base games. Neither route automatically makes every other faction playable.
The key distinction: DLC ownership controls which races and Lords you can select, not which ones appear in the campaign. All factions remain in the world as AI, so you do not need their DLC just to encounter them. This guide reflects official information checked October 4, 2026; check your own storefront for current regional pricing and availability.

Warhammer Games Workshop Age of Sigmar - Warcry: Pyre and Flood (Expansion Set) | $114.75 | Buy on Amazon |
Do you need WARHAMMER I or II for Immortal Empires?
No, not if you own Total War: WARHAMMER III: SEGA says the game grants Immortal Empires access and its launch races and Lords, including Daemons of Chaos, Grand Cathay, Khorne, Kislev, Nurgle, Slaanesh, Tzeentch, and Warriors of Chaos (Be’lakor). Since September 2026, buying any one of the four Lords of the End Times packs is another entry route, granting Immortal Empires without any prior trilogy game. SEGA’s ownership guide and the September 2026 Total War FAQ describe these entitlements.
If you already own WARHAMMER III, you do not need to buy a Lords of the End Times pack to access the campaign. Conversely, a Lords of the End Times pack is a new-player entry option, not a blanket unlock for every race in the trilogy.
#1 Best Overall
- Games Workshop - Warhammer - Age of Sigmar - Warcry: Pyre and Flood (Expansion Set)
- Merciless flame-spewing servants of Nagash clash with aelven warrior-monks of the Lumineth
- Includes a scenery piece depicting the head of a ruined Seraphon statue
- Full rules for both warbands, plus lore, artwork, and campaign missions
- These miniatures are supplied unpainted and require assembly – we recommend using Citadel Plastic Glue and Citadel Colour paints.
What does each purchase actually unlock?
Think of Immortal Empires access and faction ownership as separate. The base games unlock their associated core races and Lords; race packs and Lord packs add their listed playable content. WARHAMMER I and II DLC can be purchased without owning the corresponding base game. For example, SEGA says Curse of the Vampire Coast alone unlocks Vampire Coast. Use the official ownership table to verify the exact Lord and race entitlements before buying.
- WARHAMMER I: the base game unlocks its listed Empire, Dwarfs, Greenskins, and Vampire Counts content.
- WARHAMMER II: the base game unlocks its listed Dark Elves, Lizardmen, High Elves, and Skaven content.
- Race packs: examples include Rise of the Tomb Kings for Tomb Kings, Curse of the Vampire Coast for Vampire Coast, Realm of the Wood Elves for Wood Elves, Call of the Beastmen for Beastmen, and Norsca for Norsca.
- Lord packs: these unlock specific Lords and associated content. For example, The Prophet and the Warlock unlocks Ikit Claw and Tehenhauin; The Warden and the Paunch unlocks Grom and Eltharion; Thrones of Decay includes Tamurkhan, Malakai, or Elspeth content. Consult the table for the full entitlement attached to each product.
“Free” does not always mean available with no race ownership. SEGA’s example is Imrik, available to players who own WARHAMMER II or The Warden and the Paunch. Free Lords and units are generally tied to access to their race. Bretonnia is an exception in the Lords of the End Times entry path: it is playable for all Immortal Empires players and includes four Legendary Lords.
Which Lords of the End Times option should you buy?
The four characters are Boris Todbringer, Thanquol, the Glottkin, and Nagash. The official FAQ says one pack grants its selected Lord and associated new content, that race’s core roster and associated Free-LC, Immortal Empires, the WARHAMMER III prologue, and playable Bretonnia with its four Lords. Choose an individual pack to try one character, or compare the complete bundle against buying the Lords separately. The FAQ states a 15% discount for the complete bundle; confirm the current price and discount in your local storefront before purchasing.
| Lord | Officially suggested fit |
|---|---|
| Boris Todbringer | Balanced Empire roster and classic warfare |
| Thanquol | High-risk schemes |
| The Glottkin | Plague-focused attrition |
| Nagash | Arcane power and undead armies; also grants units from Tomb Kings, Vampire Counts, and Vampire Coast rosters, and unlocks Neferata as a free playable Vampire Counts Lord |
These are the developer’s descriptions, not an independent ranking. The complete pack is advertised with four Legendary Lords, eight Legendary Heroes, five Lords & Heroes, 23 battle units, and 12 Regiments of Renown; those figures describe the bundle’s advertised contents, not separate counts for each individual pack. See the Warhammer Community announcement for the bundle details.
How to choose a legacy DLC without overbuying
- Name the Lord or race you want to play. Start from the campaign or faction that interests you rather than buying packs in a general “best DLC” order.
- Find that character in SEGA’s ownership table. Check whether the entitlement is a base game, race pack, Lord pack, or another listed product, and read the associated content rather than assuming the title unlocks an entire race.
- Buy the smallest relevant entitlement. A legacy DLC can unlock playable content even without its original WARHAMMER I or II base game, where the ownership table says it does.
- Check your client before checkout. SEGA names Steam, Epic, and Microsoft/Game Pass and says ownership must be on the same client as the game for the content to be accessible.
- Compare live local prices. Store prices and discounts vary by region and date. The Steam DLC listing is one storefront’s listing; it is not a price reference for Epic or Microsoft/Game Pass.
Which DLC should you buy first?
There is no universal first purchase. If you already have WARHAMMER III, pick the smallest entitlement that unlocks the race or Lord you most want to command. If you do not own any trilogy base game, a single Lords of the End Times pack can serve as a lower-commitment Immortal Empires entry; choose the bundle only if its four Lords and associated content are worth the local price to you.
For a later purchase, the official FAQ points interested players toward Tyrion for a balanced High Elf roster, Zhao Ming for approachable Grand Cathay, Helman Ghorst for undead, Ikit Claw for Skaven technology and destructive weapons, Malakai for Dwarf engineering, and Golgfag Maneater for a mobile Ogre mercenary campaign. These are options for players drawn to those races, not a required purchase sequence. Verify each Lord’s exact unlock in SEGA’s ownership guide.
Can you play or encounter a faction without its DLC?
You can encounter unowned factions in Immortal Empires, but you cannot select their locked race or Lords as your own. Unowned factions remain in the world as AI and can be fought, allied with, or negotiated with. Buy DLC for player access, not simply to populate the campaign map with that faction.
