The Genocide route is the hardest overall. Undertale creator Toby Fox described it as harder than both Neutral and Pacifist—not just because of its boss fights, but because completing it demands sustained effort and carries an emotional cost. If you mean route-following effort alone, Fox said Pacifist takes more effort than Neutral.
What “hardest” means in Undertale
There is no standardized difficulty score or comparative player study establishing a numerical ranking. The clearest comparison comes from Fox’s qualitative comments, which encompass combat, route requirements, and the emotional experience. Those are related but distinct kinds of difficulty: a route can take more effort to follow without being the hardest in combat.

In an interview reproduced by PC Gamer and syndicated on Steam News, Fox observed that “the ‘good path’ was sometimes the easiest one” in games, adding, “But if you do things without effort, then it doesn’t feel meaningful.” He characterized Genocide as harder still, explaining that killing characters the player has grown fond of can be more challenging than dodging projectiles. How the three routes compare
| Route | What makes it challenging | How to interpret the comparison |
|---|---|---|
| Neutral | It is the baseline in Fox’s comparison. | Fox described Pacifist as requiring more effort. This is a qualitative judgment, not a measured score. |
| Pacifist | Following its route takes more effort than Neutral, according to Fox. | More route-following effort does not mean it has the hardest combat. |
| Genocide | It combines demanding route conditions, distinctive encounters, and emotional difficulty. | Fox described it as harder overall than the other routes, not merely as a single difficult battle. |
Why Genocide is demanding to complete
The Genocide route asks the player to exhaust each region’s kill counter before approaching the boss encounter at that region’s end. As the counter runs down, random encounters become harder to find, so finishing the requirement can take persistence. The Undertale Wiki documents these requirements as 20 kills in the Ruins, 16 in Snowdin, 18 in Waterfall, and 40 in Hotland/CORE. These are route requirements, not statistics about player performance; the wiki is community-maintained. See its Genocide Route kill-counter reference for the mechanics.

Missing a route requirement can cause the run to revert to Neutral. The strict regional conditions make route completion a different challenge from simply winning a hard fight.
Why the boss fights matter—but do not settle the question
Genocide includes three distinctive encounters listed by the route reference: Undyne the Undying, Mettaton NEO, and Sans. Sans is a standout difficult fight, but treating that one battle as the whole reason Genocide is hardest misses Fox’s point: the route’s overall difficulty also comes from its requirements and the emotional choice at its center.

Which route is hardest for you?
- For overall difficulty: Genocide, following Fox’s characterization.
- For effort to follow a route: Pacifist takes more effort than Neutral, according to Fox.
- For a memorable combat challenge: Genocide’s distinctive encounters are central, especially Sans, but that does not make combat the only measure.
- For emotional difficulty: Genocide stands apart because its premise asks players to turn against characters they may have come to care about.
The answer depends partly on what you mean by “hard,” and individual players may experience the routes differently. But on the broadest reading of the question, Genocide is the strongest answer.
