What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick your Vault Hunter by the fight you want to have, not by a tier list. Vex suits solo players who like summons, Amon suits players who want to take hits and fight up close, Rafa suits a hybrid that switches between ranged and melee, and Harlowe suits crowd control and team support. Those four are the launch hunters. The guidance behind these recommendations is launch-era material from 2025, so the later sections cover what has changed and what to check before you commit.
Start with the combat style you enjoy
- Solo play with allied summons and flexible elemental damage: Vex the Siren.
- Standing at the front, absorbing damage, and pushing into melee: Amon the Forgeknight.
- Switching between long-range heavy weapons and close-range melee in the same fight: Rafa the Exo-Soldier.
- Grouping enemies, slowing them down, and supporting allies: Harlowe the Gravitar.
If none of those clearly fits, the build system matters more than the starting pick. Each hunter can branch into different playstyles, as explained below.

The four launch hunters
Vex the Siren
Vex is the clearest fit for players who like summons. Phase Phamiliar can call Trouble, Dead Ringer summons a Reaper or Specter, and the Incarnate path leans toward a more self-powered style of damage and healing. Her Phase Covenant trait ties skill and melee damage to the element of the gun you have equipped, which rewards players who swap weapons often. Epic Games Store’s September 11, 2025 class guide calls her the best class for solo players. That is editorial advice rather than a measured ranking.
Trade-off: summon-led play can feel indirect if you want to lead every fight with your own weapon or melee attacks.

Amon the Forgeknight
Amon combines durability with aggressive close-range play. His Forgeskill changes with the Action Skill you have equipped. The skill trees cover thrown forge weapons, aggression that regenerates his shield, and a frontal shield that absorbs damage and offers team utility. His Vengeance archetype includes defensive and teammate-support functions. The Epic guide describes his role as close-range and frontline oriented.
Trade-off: if you prefer keeping your distance, Rafa or Harlowe will suit you better.

Rafa the Exo-Soldier
Rafa is the hybrid. Apophis Lance is ranged ordnance, Peacebreaker Cannons fire in a frontal arc, and Arc-Knives provide a melee style built on marking targets and dashing between them. Overdrive raises damage and movement speed while an Action Skill is active.
Trade-off: versatility means you will need to choose which of the three ability patterns you actually want to use. The available guidance does not compare how easy or how damaging each pattern is.

Harlowe the Gravitar
Harlowe is built around control and team tools. Entanglement shares damage among linked enemies. Flux Generator adds Cryo pressure and an ally overshield. Zero Point applies stasis, and Chroma Accelerator adds an orb and a Radiation explosion. The Epic guide describes her as the clearest support-oriented choice among the launch hunters.
Trade-off: some control effects depend on the target being susceptible to them, and the value of her support changes with your build and group makeup.

How the four compare
The useful comparison axes are solo capability, close-range resilience, ranged versus melee flexibility, crowd control, and co-op utility. The table lists only the role descriptions that the sources state.
| Hunter | Best fit | Primary range | Team role described by sources | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Vex the Siren | Solo play, summon-based combat | Summons fight alongside you | Not stated as a team-buff role; described through solo support and self-powered healing | Summon-led play can feel indirect |
| Amon the Forgeknight | Durable close-range fighting | Close-range and frontline | Vengeance teammate buffs and a frontal shield with team utility | Less suited to players who want distance |
| Rafa the Exo-Soldier | Ranged and melee hybrid | Both, depending on the ability you use | Not stated in the sources reviewed | Must choose which ability pattern to focus on |
| Harlowe the Gravitar | Crowd control and co-op support | Control effects across several enemies | Ally overshields, stasis, and damage or fire-rate support through selected skills | Control depends on target susceptibility; support varies by build |
No controlled damage, difficulty, campaign-speed, or pick-rate figures are available for these hunters, so this comparison does not rank them. The table reflects role descriptions only.

Build flexibility matters more than the starting pick
According to PlayStation Blog’s April 30, 2025 Vault Hunter overview, each hunter has three signature Action Skill options, a unique trait, and three branching passive skill paths. Augments and capstones can further modify a build. Your starting class therefore does not lock you into one playstyle. Choose the combat fantasy you find most appealing, then adjust the build as you go.
Co-op and team play
PlayStation’s product information states that Borderlands 4 supports four-player online co-op, with level scaling and individual difficulty settings. Harlowe is the most clearly support-oriented launch hunter, and Amon’s Vengeance build provides buffs for teammates. Neither hunter is required for a successful team, and a group can succeed with any of the four.
What these recommendations do not establish
- No measured damage, difficulty, campaign-speed, or win-rate data supports a ranking of these hunters.
- The role descriptions come from launch-era guidance. Balance patches since then can change how strong each hunter feels, so re-check current abilities before committing to a build.
- The claim that Vex is the best solo class is editorial advice from the Epic Games Store guide, not a tested result.
Newer hunters and the current roster
The four hunters above are the launch roster. Official PlayStation information now lists later add-on content. Official 2K material describes C4SH as the first of two planned new Vault Hunters in paid Story Packs, and describes the Vault Hunter Pack as adding two new playable hunters. This article does not cover those characters’ current availability or mechanics. Check the live roster and your platform store before buying, and if you are starting the base campaign, the four-hunter comparison above applies.
