Choose Watch Dogs 2 for Marcus Holloway, the San Francisco Bay Area, and hacking connected devices; choose Watch Dogs: Legion for near-future London and its recruit-and-switch system. The original is the series’ first game, but the official details available here are not enough for a fair mechanics comparison. Before buying any entry, confirm the exact platform and edition on the store where you plan to purchase it.

Which Watch Dogs game fits what you want?

Game Best fit if you want What the official description emphasizes
Watch Dogs 2 One central protagonist, a San Francisco Bay Area setting, and hacking connected technology. Marcus Holloway and DedSec’s campaign against ctOS 2.0; examples of hackable devices include drones, cars, cranes, and security robots. Ubisoft also lists co-op and player-versus-player activities. Watch Dogs: Legion Near-future London and a cast you build by recruiting people you encounter. Recruit and play as operatives with individual skills, resources, and talents; Ubisoft describes hacking, infiltration, and fighting as part of building a resistance. Ubisoft’s Legion page
Watch Dogs (the original) You want to start with the series’ first game. The sources cited here do not establish enough about its protagonist, setting, or mechanics to compare it fairly with the other two.

What makes Watch Dogs 2 a fit?

Watch Dogs 2 puts Marcus Holloway, a hacker in the San Francisco Bay Area, at the center of the story. Ubisoft says he works with DedSec to take down ctOS 2.0. Its description makes the hacking premise concrete: you can take control of connected devices such as drones, cars, cranes, and security robots. Ubisoft also lists co-op and player-versus-player activities, though that listing alone does not establish current online availability or activity.

Pick this entry if Marcus, the Bay Area, or the idea of using connected infrastructure as part of your approach is the deciding draw. Ubisoft lists Watch Dogs 2 for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. Its page displays Standard, Deluxe, and Gold editions; check the listing for your platform and region to see exactly what each currently includes. Ubisoft also notes that DLC compatibility through its store is limited to base games purchased through Ubisoft.com or Ubisoft Connect. Check Ubisoft’s platform and edition information.

What makes Watch Dogs: Legion a fit?

Legion is set in near-future London and is built around recruiting people you encounter in the city. Ubisoft says each recruit has individual skills, resources, and talents, and presents the game as a resistance-building experience involving hacking, infiltration, and fighting. Its “Play as Anyone” idea is the key distinction to weigh: the focus is less on following one named protagonist and more on assembling and switching among operatives.

Watch Dogs Legion (PS5)
  • Open-world London, explore a massive urban open-world where you can visit London's many famous landmarks
  • play as anyone, experience a never-seen-before gameplay Innovation. Anyone you see can join your team complete with a unique backstory, personality, and skill set
  • weaponise London's Tech infrastructure. Hijack armed combat drones, deploy stealthy spider-bots, covertly take down enemies using an augmented reality cloak, and much more
  • bring your team online and join forces with up to three friends and explore the world together or take on entirely new co-op missions

Choose Legion if that recruit-and-switch structure and London setting appeal more than Marcus Holloway’s single-character setup. Ubisoft lists it for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S. The Ubisoft page displays Standard, Deluxe, Gold, and Ultimate editions, and lists Bloodline and Season Pass add-ons. Those labels do not by themselves confirm what a current regional store listing bundles. Check Ubisoft’s Legion platform and edition information.

Should you play Watch Dogs 2 or Legion first?

If you are choosing between these two based on the available official descriptions, start with the one whose central premise you prefer: Marcus and connected-device hacking in Watch Dogs 2, or recruiting operatives in London in Legion. The material cited here does not establish a required play order between them, so there is no supported reason to treat one as necessary preparation for the other.

What to check before you buy

  • Platform: Watch Dogs 2 is listed for PC, PS4, and Xbox One; Legion is listed for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S. Confirm the exact product listing for your console or PC storefront.
  • Edition contents: Compare the contents shown on the current store page rather than relying on an edition name. Ubisoft’s historical Legion editions announcement described the Season Pass as including story expansions, extra missions, playable heroes, and the Complete Edition of the original Watch Dogs. That announcement is not proof those items are included in every copy or current listing.
  • Cross-generation upgrade: At Legion’s 2020 launch, Ubisoft announced a no-additional-cost upgrade path from PS4 to PS5 and Xbox One to Xbox Series X|S for purchasers on the corresponding last-generation console. This is historical launch information, not confirmation of current eligibility; check the relevant platform store for present account and entitlement conditions. Ubisoft’s launch-era upgrade and post-launch announcement.
  • Region and availability: Ubisoft’s pages display editions and may show prices that vary by region. Current prices, stock, and physical-versus-digital availability are not established here, so verify them in the store you will use.

What is known about the original Watch Dogs?

Ubisoft describes the franchise as dating to 2014 and calls Legion its third entry. It also reports that the first Watch Dogs gathered more than 40 million players worldwide. Ubisoft does not state a measurement date or methodology on that page, so this is a publisher-reported historical figure, not a current player count or an independent sales measure. For a detailed comparison of the original’s protagonist, setting, or mechanics against 2 and Legion, the cited official sources do not provide enough information. If you are considering it because a Legion edition may include it, verify the exact package contents on your platform’s listing rather than assuming the original is bundled.
