The OBS community Media Playlist Source plugin is the clearest match: its listing says it saves the currently playing file so that file plays when OBS restarts. That does not establish that it restores the exact point within the file, starts OBS after a full server reboot, or reconnects the stream to YouTube. Those are separate recovery steps.
What “resume” can mean
A server restart can interrupt several different parts of a YouTube broadcast. A tool that remembers a playlist item does not necessarily restart the streaming software or restore the broadcast. Check each stage separately:
- Playlist state: Does the source remember which file was playing?
- Playback position: Does it return to the elapsed point in that file, or start that file over?
- Application startup: Does OBS launch after the operating system boots?
- YouTube connection: Does the encoder reconnect using the intended stream key, and what happens to the broadcast during the interruption?
The available feature description for Media Playlist Source supports the first item after OBS restarts. It does not establish the remaining behavior or seamless recovery across a full host reboot.
OBS tools that handle playlists
Media Playlist Source plugin
The OBS Project Forum listing describes Media Playlist Source as an alternative to OBS’s VLC Video Source. It says the plugin saves the currently playing file so it will be played when OBS restarts. The listing identifies version 0.1.3, a minimum OBS Studio version of 30.0.0, and Windows, macOS, and Linux support. These are details published in the resource listing, not results of independent reboot testing.

The listing does not say whether playback resumes at the exact elapsed position inside the file. Nor does it say the plugin launches OBS after an operating-system reboot or reconnects OBS to YouTube. Verify those behaviors in your own setup before depending on unattended recovery.
OBS VLC Video Source
OBS’s Media Sources guide documents that VLC Video Source can use a playlist, loop it, and shuffle it. VLC must be installed for the source to appear in OBS. The guide does not claim that VLC Video Source preserves the current playlist item across an OBS restart.

That makes VLC Video Source useful for playlist playback, but its documented features alone do not answer whether it will restore the previous item or position after a restart.
Set up and verify the recovery path
Treat the source playlist, OBS startup, and YouTube connection as separate parts of the system. The exact operating-system steps for launching OBS at boot depend on the host and are not specified by the plugin listing or OBS’s media-source guide.

- Check compatibility. For Media Playlist Source, compare your OBS Studio version and operating system with the plugin listing: it specifies OBS Studio 30.0.0 or later and lists Windows, macOS, and Linux.
- Configure the playlist source. Use the plugin’s own current instructions to add and populate the source. For OBS’s VLC Video Source instead, install VLC, then configure the playlist and any needed loop or shuffle behavior in the source properties.
- Configure YouTube’s ingest settings. In YouTube Live Control Room, confirm the intended stream settings and stream key. YouTube’s live stream settings guide explains stream keys and “Reuse settings.” Reuse settings carries over stream metadata, settings, and the key; it does not save or restore the encoder’s playlist state.
- Arrange host startup separately. If recovery must include a full server reboot, configure and test the host’s method for launching OBS at boot. The playlist plugin’s restart claim is not a host-startup feature.
- Run a controlled restart test. With a non-critical broadcast or test stream, note the current file and elapsed position, restart OBS, and check what the source plays. Then test a full host reboot and separately confirm whether OBS launches and reconnects to the intended YouTube stream. Record any interruption and whether playback restarts at the beginning or resumes in place.
Keep source recovery separate from YouTube ingest behavior
YouTube stream configuration determines where the encoder sends video; it does not preserve a source playlist’s playback state. YouTube also supports HLS ingest with OBS among the listed encoders, but its rolling-playlist requirement concerns the HLS segments sent to YouTube—no more than five outstanding segments—not the streamer’s playlist of source videos. See YouTube’s HLS setup guide.
If OBS disconnects, playlist persistence is not a network fix. OBS says intermittent disconnections can result from network issues between the computer and the remote ingest server. Its stream connection troubleshooting guide addresses that connection problem.

Do not confuse playlist recovery with viewer DVR
YouTube DVR lets viewers pause, rewind, and continue watching a live stream. It does not restart the encoder or restore the playlist on the streaming server. YouTube says DVR capabilities may be limited or unavailable for live streams longer than 12 hours; the limitation affects viewers’ pause-and-resume options, not server-side playlist recovery. See YouTube’s DVR guide.
What to check before relying on unattended streaming
- Whether the current file is remembered after OBS restarts.
- Whether playback returns to an elapsed position or begins that file again.
- Whether OBS starts automatically after a complete operating-system reboot.
- Whether the encoder reconnects to the intended YouTube stream and how the interruption appears to viewers.
- Whether the media files and playlist format work in the selected source.
- Whether the source’s software requirements match the installed OBS and VLC versions.
The plugin listing and OBS documentation do not provide controlled reboot-test results, recovery-time measurements, or a comparative reliability ranking. Validate the exact combination of host, source, files, OBS configuration, and YouTube stream state that you plan to use.
