What is established is that Australia added Nic Maddinson and Sam Harper to the squad before the opening Test in South Africa: Harper provided wicketkeeping cover for injured Josh Inglis, while Maddinson gave selectors another batting option as Cameron Green’s fitness remained uncertain.
Why did Australia call up Nic Maddinson?
Josh Inglis was ruled out of the opening Test after fracturing his right index finger. Cameron Green was also being assessed after an abdominal strain. Australia added Maddinson and wicketkeeper Sam Harper to its squad as cover for the injuries, the ICC reported on 1 October 2026.
Chief selector George Bailey described the pair’s distinct roles: “Sam gives us wicketkeeping cover as Josh continues his recovery, while Nic provides flexibility throughout the batting order,” ABC News reported.
What made Maddinson a fit for the squad?
Bailey’s reasoning, as quoted by Cricket Australia, focused on role and conditions rather than age. Selectors wanted a batter who could play at the top of the order or further down, and who was considered strong against spin. They expected turn in Durban, where the first Test was scheduled to begin on 9 October 2026.

Cricket Australia attributed to CricViz a first-class average of 47.97 against spin for Maddinson; the report did not state the period covered by that figure. It also noted that Cooper Connolly was a possible replacement, but was viewed more as a middle-order prospect, while Maddinson had experience opening as well as batting lower in the order.
What form was Maddinson in?
Shortly before the call-up, Maddinson scored a one-day century for New South Wales. Cricket Australia reported it was his first century in any format since March 2024. He had played three Tests in 2016, and the report said he had been away from first-class cricket for 20 months.

The report also described his treatment for testicular cancer in 2025, including surgery and chemotherapy after the cancer had spread to parts of his abdominal lymph nodes and lung. That context helps explain the unusual length of his absence; it is separate from the selectors’ stated cricketing reasons.
Maddinson’s manager Peter Lovitt captured how unexpected the call-up was: “Nic needs some back-up pairs of pads and gloves,” he said, adding, “We weren’t exactly expecting this to happen,” according to Cricket Australia.

Who is the “young batsman” Australia overlooked?
The West Australian published the headline “The young batsman Australia have overlooked in favour of Nic Maddinson for call-up to tour of South Africa” on 3 October 2026, with Josh Kempton credited as author. In the accessible version, the article body is behind a subscription prompt. The identity of the younger batter therefore cannot be confirmed from the available text.
Other reports discuss potential alternatives, including Connolly, but they do not establish that he is the person meant by The West Australian headline. It would be misleading to treat any candidate as the answer without the article text or another source making the identification.

What was known about the tour at the time?
The ICC listed the three Tests for 9–13 October in Durban, 18–22 October in Gqeberha, and 27–31 October 2026. Its report listed Johannesburg as the third-Test venue, while Cricket Australia’s tour coverage listed Newlands, Cape Town. The venue information therefore differed between the two reports. Squad and injury details were also time-sensitive: Maddinson’s inclusion did not itself confirm that he would play, and Green’s availability was still under assessment.
