TechCrunch reported that an unnamed source familiar with Activision’s response linked the takedown to hacks and said the company was working on a patch. Activision’s public wording, as reported at the time, was limited to investigating “an issue”; it did not publicly confirm that player hacks caused the takedown.
What happened to Call of Duty: WWII on PC?
On July 7 and 8, 2025, reports said Activision had taken one PC edition of Call of Duty: WWII offline: the Microsoft Store version available through Xbox PC and Game Pass. The 2017 shooter had recently become available through Microsoft Store and Game Pass. The reports did not say that every PC or console edition was taken offline.

Activision’s publicly described explanation was that the game had been brought offline while the company investigated “an issue” or “reports of an issue,” according to PC Gamer’s July 7, 2025 report and TechCrunch’s July 8, 2025 report. TechCrunch said Activision did not respond to its requests for comment; neither report quoted a named Activision representative confirming an RCE vulnerability or explaining the takedown as a response to hacks.
What did the reports say about hacking?
TechCrunch cited an unnamed source familiar with Activision’s response who said the company took the Microsoft Store edition offline because of hacks and was working on a patch. The source was not identified because they were not authorized to speak to the press. That is the source’s account, not a public technical finding attributed to Activision.

TechCrunch also described player complaints about being hacked while playing, including a July 3, 2025 post in which a player said, “I JUST GOT HACKED PLAYING WW2! EVERYONE DO NOT PLAY WW2 ON GAMEPASS!” A player’s account or warning is an allegation, not proof by itself. Before the TechCrunch report, the complaints had not been confirmed as the reason for the takedown.
What does the reported RCE concern mean?
PC Gamer described the reports as involving remote code execution, or RCE. In general, an RCE vulnerability can let an attacker run code on another person’s device through vulnerable software. That potential consequence is more serious than ordinary cheating, which gives someone an unfair advantage within a match.

The reporting reviewed for this article does not identify a verified vulnerability number, publish a technical advisory, or provide forensic confirmation tying particular player incidents to a specific flaw. A Reddit player’s warning that “The game is not safe to play on PC right now, there’s an RCE exploit” should therefore be understood as a player’s warning, not an official security advisory.
Which editions were affected?
| Distribution | What the July 2025 reports established | Current status established by those reports |
|---|---|---|
| Microsoft Store / Xbox PC / Game Pass PC | Identified as the edition taken offline. TechCrunch, citing two sources familiar with the situation, said it differed from the Steam and Battle.net editions and contained an old flaw that had been patched on those other versions. | Whether it was restored or patched by October 7, 2026, is not established. |
| Steam | Not identified as the edition taken offline. TechCrunch’s sources said the flaw in question had been patched on this version. | No current safety or availability status is established by the July 2025 reports. |
| Battle.net | Not identified as the edition taken offline. TechCrunch’s sources said the flaw in question had been patched on this version. | No current safety or availability status is established by the July 2025 reports. |
| Console editions | The reports did not say that console editions were taken offline. | No current safety or availability status is established by the July 2025 reports. |
The statements about the older flaw and its status on Steam and Battle.net are attributed to TechCrunch’s sources; they are not a current safety guarantee for either version.

Can you play the affected edition now?
The July 2025 coverage does not establish whether Activision later restored or patched the Microsoft Store/Game Pass PC edition. It cannot answer whether the game is available or safe to play today. Check current Activision support information and the relevant Microsoft Store or Xbox PC listing for an up-to-date availability or remediation notice before deciding to play.
Activision’s August 26, 2025 discussion of Secure Boot and TPM 2.0 requirements concerned planned anti-cheat measures for Black Ops 7, not a fix for the Call of Duty: WWII issue. The separate update is available from Call of Duty’s official announcement.
