Before the Radeon RX 9070 launch, AMD said it was using extra time to tune the software, expand support for its FSR 4 upscaling technology, and coordinate with board partners to have more cards available at launch. Those were AMD’s stated reasons—not proof that the delay improved performance or ensured adequate stock in every market.
What AMD said it was preparing
In January 2025, AMD executives described three parallel workstreams ahead of the Radeon RX 9070 series launch: software and driver optimization, more games supporting FSR 4, and inventory coordination with graphics-card partners. The comments addressed readiness across the product and its launch ecosystem, rather than a single hardware change.
Software and performance tuning
David McAfee, AMD’s corporate vice president and general manager of client channel business, said the company was taking extra time to optimize the software stack for maximum performance. HotHardware also reported AMD graphics executive Frank Azor saying the team was finishing software work. These remarks establish AMD’s stated focus, but the reports do not independently demonstrate what performance changed as a result.
More FSR 4 game support
McAfee also said AMD wanted to enable more FSR 4 titles. At the formal launch, AMD said FSR 4 would be supported in over 30 games at launch, with 75 expected later in 2025. Those are AMD’s announced support counts and target, not an independent audit of compatibility or a guarantee that every planned title arrived on schedule.

Partner cards and retail inventory
AMD said it was working with its board partners, some of which had begun building initial retailer inventory, and that more partner cards should be available at launch. This was a plan for broader availability; the January comments do not establish whether supply was sufficient across retailers or regions.
When the RX 9070 launched
AMD formally announced the Radeon RX 9070 and RX 9070 XT on February 28, 2025, and said partner cards were expected to begin arriving March 6. That later announcement confirms the launch timing that the January preparation reports had described as forthcoming. AMD’s launch suggested prices were $549 for RX 9070 and $599 for RX 9070 XT; these are February 2025 launch figures, not current retail prices.

How the RX 9070 compared with the RX 9070 XT at launch
AMD’s launch specifications show the main differences relevant to buyers comparing the two cards. The clock speeds and specifications below are AMD’s published figures; the suggested prices are historical launch SEPs.
| Specification | Radeon RX 9070 | Radeon RX 9070 XT |
|---|---|---|
| Compute units | 56 | 64 |
| Game clock | 2.1 GHz | 2.4 GHz |
| Boost clock | Up to 2.5 GHz | Up to 2.97 GHz |
| Total board power (TBP) | 220 W | 304 W |
| Launch SEP (February 2025) | $549 | $599 |
AMD’s RX 9070 specification table also lists 16 GB of memory, a 256-bit memory interface, and 64 MB of Infinity Cache. AMD’s live product page recommends a minimum 650 W power supply and lists two 8-pin power connectors.

What AMD claimed about performance
In its February 28, 2025 announcement, AMD said the RX 9070 delivered over 20% higher average gaming performance than the RX 7900 GRE at 1440p. AMD gave a separate figure—over 40%—for the RX 9070 XT versus the RX 7900 GRE at 1440p. These are company-stated comparisons; the announcement does not establish that they were independently reproduced.
What the preparation reports do—and do not—show
The January reports document AMD’s explanation for taking extra time: tune software, bring more FSR 4 games online, and work with partners on launch inventory. AMD’s later announcement supplies the eventual launch date, launch pricing, specifications, and its stated performance and FSR 4 support figures. Neither the preparation comments nor the launch announcement independently establish that the extra time improved real-world performance or that cards were plentiful in every market.
