Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFirst check the live stream’s monetization setting and mid-roll mode in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. If monetization is on but the stream is set to Manual, you must insert ad breaks yourself; without them, YouTube says no mid-rolls will be served. Even with a break, an ad is not guaranteed, and YouTube’s reviewed guidance does not establish looping footage itself as the cause.
Check the active stream’s monetization setting
- In YouTube Studio, open the stream in Live Control Room.
- Open the stream’s Edit settings and go to Monetization.
- Confirm monetization is On. YouTube says live ads can serve when the channel is monetized and monetization is turned on for that stream. A channel-level default is not a substitute for checking the active stream. YouTube Help: Monetize your live stream
Check which mid-roll mode the stream uses
The mode determines who creates the ad break and whether you need to act. YouTube recommends Automatic; Scheduled and Manual offer more control over timing, but YouTube says their earnings potential may be lower than Automatic.
| Mode | Who places the break? | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Automatic | YouTube’s system | YouTube recommends this option. Frequency can be Low, Medium, or High; viewers may receive ads at different times. |
| Scheduled | You set an interval | Available intervals are 6, 12, 18, 24, or 30 minutes. |
| Manual | You insert each break | You must insert breaks during the stream. YouTube says no mid-rolls will be served if you do not insert them. |
Check the mode on the active stream rather than assuming a channel default carried over. Eligible monetized channels without rights management can set defaults for future live streams; YouTube says its default is monetization On with Automatic at Medium, but creators can change it. YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings
Understand why a break may not produce an ad
A mid-roll break creates an opportunity, not a guarantee. YouTube states, “Ad slots are not guaranteed to serve ads.” Whether an ad runs depends on multiple factors, including slot quality, advertiser demand, and viewer experience. An ad may serve to some viewers while others continue watching without one. YouTube Help: Monetize your live stream YouTube Help: Live ad serving tips

YouTube reported an average “over 20% uplift in in-stream ad revenue per hour” among creators who chose live automatic mid-rolls, compared with channels that had not turned them on, averaged across 207 countries in January 2024. This is a platform-reported comparison, not a forecast or guarantee for an individual channel.
Compare playback on YouTube with an auto-start embed
If a viewer is watching through an external-site YouTube player embed configured to auto-start, YouTube says live-stream ads are turned off for that stream. Ask affected viewers to open the stream directly on YouTube and compare the result; the embed setting can explain why ads are absent in that playback context. YouTube Help: Embed videos and playlists

Review channel and content eligibility
- Confirm the channel is eligible and monetized, and that monetization is on for this stream.
- Check whether the content is age-restricted: YouTube says age-restricted content can be ineligible for monetization.
- Review advertiser-friendly guidelines. Content that does not comply can receive limited or no ads. YouTube Help: Advertiser-friendly content guidelines
Does looping footage itself stop mid-roll ads?
YouTube’s reviewed live-stream ad guidance explains ad modes, settings, and delivery, but does not identify looping or repeating footage by itself as a reason mid-rolls will not appear. That does not establish that every loop stream is eligible or that looping can never matter in a particular case; it means the cited guidance does not settle that specific causal question. Check the documented settings and eligibility factors first.
If the stream is still showing no mid-rolls
- Verify monetization is On in the active stream’s Live Control Room settings.
- Check whether the mode is Manual. If so, insert a break; changing to Automatic is another option if you prefer YouTube to manage opportunities.
- Test playback directly on YouTube, especially if the stream is normally viewed through an auto-start embed.
- Review channel and content eligibility, including age restriction and advertiser-friendly status.
- Allow for viewer and ad-serving variation: the presence of an opportunity does not mean an ad will appear to every viewer.
These checks identify documented causes, but without access to your Studio settings and stream analytics they cannot determine why a particular stream or viewer received no ad.
