Minecraft bees may be hiding rather than dying: they return to their nest or hive at night, in rain, and after gathering pollen. If they are still missing during clear daytime weather, check for recent stings, direct fire contact, and—if you play Java Edition—water exposure.
First check whether the bees are actually gone
Bees return to their nest or hive at night, during rain, and after collecting pollen. A bee that disappears from view may simply be inside. Check the hive entrance and watch the area during a clear daytime period before concluding that the bees have died. Mojang describes the behavior in its Java Edition bee notes and Bedrock release notes.
What can kill bees?
Stinging
A community-maintained Minecraft reference says bees die shortly after they sting. If bees attacked you after a disturbance or during honey collection, that may explain why they later disappeared. The reference is not official documentation, so treat this as a likely explanation rather than a complete, authoritative list of death causes: Minecraft Wiki: Bee.
Direct contact with fire
Campfire smoke can calm bees for honey collection, according to Mojang’s Java Edition notes. That does not mean bees are immune to flames. If you have a campfire beneath a hive, make sure bees cannot fly through the fire itself. The Bedrock notes confirm normal bee behavior but do not explicitly establish every campfire detail for every current version.

Water contact in Java Edition
The Minecraft Wiki says water damages bees in Java Edition but not Bedrock Edition. Check which edition you are playing, and keep in mind that this edition-specific detail comes from a community-maintained source rather than the official notes cited above. Confirm it against your installed version if water seems to be the cause.

Troubleshoot a missing hive one check at a time
- Check the hive or nest. Look at its entrance, then observe it in clear daytime weather; bees may be inside because it is night, raining, or they have returned after gathering pollen.
- Think back to recent attacks. If bees stung you, the sting may account for a later loss.
- Inspect the route around any campfire. Smoke may help make honey collection safer, but the bees should not be able to fly through the flames.
- If you play Java Edition, look for water contact. The reported water-damage difference is edition-specific and based on the Minecraft Wiki.
- If the cause is still unclear, note your edition and game version and inspect the area around the hive. The available sources do not establish a complete official list of bee death causes or a general explanation for bees despawning, so avoid assuming a bug without version-specific evidence.
