Why Are My Villagers Not Restocking?

Villagers restock only while working at their profession block, up to twice per game day. Here is how to find out why a trade is stuck.

Villagers restock a trade only while they work at their profession block, and they restock at most twice per in-game day. If a trade stays locked, check four things in order: whether the offer is actually used up, whether the villager still has a usable workstation, whether it can reach that workstation, and, on Bedrock Edition, whether it is linked to a bed. The steps below follow that order.

What the restock rules say

Three rules govern restocking, and they explain most of the confusion around it:

  • Restocking happens at the workstation. The Minecraft Wiki’s trading overview ties restocking to the villager working at its profession block. A villager without a block it can use cannot restock through normal work.
  • There is a daily cap. A villager restocks up to two times per game day. A third restock in the same day should not be expected, so waiting until the next day is the only fix in that case.
  • Each offer has its own limit. The wiki’s trade reference explains that every trade offer has a use limit before it needs restocking, and a depleted offer is shown with a red X in the trading interface.

The table below shows where the edition matters. The daily cap and workstation rule are presented in the same way in the wiki’s trading overview, with no edition split stated. The bed-link rule is stated only for Bedrock Edition.

Requirement Java Edition Bedrock Edition
Work at the villager’s profession block Required by the general trading mechanic; no edition-specific detail found in the sources reviewed Required by the general trading mechanic
Bed link Not established by the sources reviewed; do not assume it applies Villager must be linked to a bed; it does not need to sleep in it (Minecraft Wiki trading overview, https://minecraft.wiki/w/Minecraft_Wiki%3AProjects/Indonesian_translation/Perdagangan)

Troubleshooting a stuck trade

  1. Confirm the offer is depleted. Right-click the villager to open its trading screen. A red X on the offer means it is used up. If the offer you want is available, you may be looking at a different trade or a different villager, which is a common cause of the “it’s not restocking” impression. The trade reference is at https://minecraft.wiki/w/Template%3ATradeLine/doc.
  2. Check the daily count. If the villager has already restocked twice today, wait for the next game day.
  3. Confirm the profession block exists and is still the villager’s. Look for the workstation block where the villager was hired. If it has been broken, replaced, or is no longer recognized as that profession’s job site, the villager has nothing to work at. The overview does not document the detailed rules for claiming a workstation, so treat this as the first thing to verify rather than a settled rule.
  4. Check that the villager can reach the block. Make sure the block is not blocked in and that the villager has a walkable route to it. Community discussion on the wiki’s Villager talk page mentions access failures, broken blocks, and changes to village or workstation state as causes. That discussion is not official verification, so use it as a list of things to inspect, not as a confirmed mechanic. The discussion is at https://minecraft.wiki/w/Talk%3AVillager.
  5. On Bedrock, confirm the bed link. The villager must be linked to a bed. It does not need to sleep in that bed, so a linked but unused bed is enough.
  6. Give the villager a work period, then check again. Restocking happens while the villager works. Leave the area for a full day cycle and return to the trade screen.

Designing a trading hall that keeps stock flowing

A confined trading hall still depends on working job sites. The wiki’s trading hall tutorial, at https://minecraft.wiki/w/Tutorial%3AVillager_trading_hall, says the hall should keep workstation blocks available so the villagers can work and restore their stock. The same tutorial is one example design, not a rule. It does not establish a required spacing between villagers or workstations, so do not treat any one layout as mandatory.

Do not rely on the old /resupply command

Older guides sometimes suggest the /resupply command as a shortcut. The wiki’s command page at https://minecraft.wiki/w/Commands/resupply states that the command existed in earlier versions and has since been removed. It is not a fix for current gameplay, so if a guide tells you to run it, the guide is out of date.

What remains unverified

  • The detailed rules for claiming a workstation and for villager pathfinding in current versions are not confirmed by official documentation.
  • Whether the bed-link requirement applies to Java Edition is not established by the sources reviewed.
  • Several of the wiki pages cited here may lag behind the current game version, so the exact details can change between updates.

If a trade still does not restock after the checks above, note the edition, the game version, the villager’s profession, and the workstation’s position before looking for further help. Those details narrow down the cause far faster than a general description of the problem.
