French high-school students are protesting conditions they say are making school difficult: too few teachers and other staff, deteriorating buildings, crowded classes, long days and frustration with the higher-education application system. Demonstrations and blockades spread from the Paris region to schools across the country. Some sites saw clashes and damage; the reported counts of affected schools and injured people cover different dates and groups, so they should not be treated as one running total.
Why are students protesting?
Students interviewed by news organizations cited shortages of teachers and other staff, inadequate or deteriorating facilities, crowded classes and long school schedules. Some also voiced dissatisfaction with the higher-education application process. These are student accounts of conditions at their schools, not a comprehensive national audit.
The protests began at schools in the Paris region in the week before September 30, 2026, then spread to other cities. The Union Syndicale Lycéenne called for a nationwide movement to coincide with a broader public-sector strike, helping bring school grievances into a wider period of labor unrest.
AFP quoted Juan, a student at Montbello high school in Lille, saying: “We don’t condone vandalism; we came to defend our rights because we have horrendous schedules — we work 8:00 am to 6:00 pm and that’s not right,” The statement reflects his position, not necessarily that of every student taking part.

How many schools were affected, and how many closed?
Reports give two different snapshots of school disruption. They use different dates and descriptions, so the figures are not interchangeable. “Affected” can include a strike, protest or blockade; it does not mean every school counted was closed.

How many people were injured or arrested?
The reported injury counts concern different groups and time periods. They should remain separate rather than being combined into a single total.

Have the protests been peaceful or violent?
Both peaceful actions and serious incidents have been reported. At some locations, accounts describe clashes, projectiles, fires, vandalism and damage to school property, alongside police use of tear gas and other crowd-control measures. Those incidents do not establish that every demonstration or participant was violent; students have also said they were protesting school conditions and disavowed vandalism.

As the unrest spread, the prime minister convened a crisis meeting. Authorities said police should clear blockades that prevented students from accessing schools and act against violence and vandalism.

Education Minister Édouard Geffray said remote classes should be used where blockades or damage made it unsafe to receive students in person. He told AP: “Violence will not deprive our students of their fundamental right to education,” and told AFP: “It is imperative that our students be able to return to class -—especially those who are currently prevented from doing so,”
The unrest also entered political debate amid discussion of the proposed 2027 budget and the coming presidential campaign. That political context does not by itself establish claims about who is responsible for the protests or whether any party is exploiting them.

What is known about the situation as of October 3?
The latest reporting covered here describes events through October 2, 2026. It establishes widespread disruption and significant injuries, but it does not establish the protest situation or a national school-closure count for October 3. School access and whether classes are in person can differ by site, depending on blockades and damage.
