A late-game Blackout freeze on Xbox One X was a documented issue in Call of Duty: Black Ops 4. Treyarch said it released an Xbox One patch for the problem on January 3, 2019. If the game still freezes for you, Activision’s general Xbox One crash checks can help distinguish a disc or game problem from a console issue, but they are not a guaranteed fix for that historical bug.
What the Xbox One X Blackout issue was
The reported symptom was an intermittent freeze during late-game play in Blackout—not proof that every affected console suffered a hardware crash or shut down. Windows Central reported on January 3, 2019, that Treyarch had released an Xbox One patch. The report says players might need to restart the game and, occasionally, the console to resume play.
Treyarch’s statement, quoted by Windows Central, was: “We’ve released a patch on Xbox One to address intermittent freezing issues during late-game play in Blackout on Xbox One X. Thanks for your patience!” Read Windows Central’s report.
This establishes that the developer addressed the issue in 2019; it does not establish how common the freeze is now or that a current recurrence has the same cause.

What to check if Black Ops 4 still freezes
Activision’s Xbox One crash guidance, dated October 8, 2019, recommends these checks. They are general troubleshooting steps, not a promise that any one will fix the Blackout-specific freeze. See Activision’s Black Ops 4 support article.
- Check for Xbox system updates. Make sure the console’s system software is up to date.
- Inspect the game disc. Look for scratches, abrasions, or dust. Activision advises wiping the disc from the center outward with a soft cotton cloth dampened with water, then letting it dry fully before use.
- Check ventilation. Keep the console in a cool, well-ventilated place.
- Clear the Xbox One cache. Follow the console’s cache-clearing procedure.
- Try the game on another Xbox One, if available. If the same disc produces the same issue on another console, Activision says the disc may be the cause and can be replaced.
- Contact Xbox Support if the basics check out. Activision advises contacting Xbox Support when the system is up to date and the disc is sound, since the console may be the source.
Use the symptom to decide what to do next
- Blackout freezes, but the console remains on: This resembles the historical game-freeze symptom, but does not prove the old issue is responsible. Apply the checks above.
- The game returns to the dashboard: Activision describes dashboard returns as a common form of Xbox One game crash. Check system software, disc condition, ventilation, and cache.
- The console itself shuts down or other games also fail: The issue may extend beyond Black Ops 4. After checking system updates and the disc, contact Xbox Support as Activision recommends.
Buying another copy is not a demonstrated fix
Microsoft’s Xbox listing identifies Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 as an Xbox One game and labels it Xbox One X Enhanced. That compatibility label does not promise immunity from freezes. A replacement copy is not an established remedy unless testing points to a damaged disc. View the Xbox listing.
