Call of Duty prepares shaders so your graphics card can render the game’s lighting, surfaces, shadows, and effects for your PC’s hardware and drivers. Preparing them before play can mean a longer wait at startup, but it can reduce shader-related hitches during a match. If preparation is still running—or was interrupted—performance may suffer. The exact behavior and advice depend on the game, platform, and storefront.
What shader compilation does
Shaders are small programs that tell the graphics processing unit (GPU) how to render visual elements, including surfaces, lighting, shadows, and effects. Consoles use standardized hardware configurations, while PC systems vary in graphics cards, drivers, and other components. Some shader work therefore needs to be prepared for a particular PC configuration. Activision explains shader preloading for the Modern Warfare 4 Beta.
Compilation is a tradeoff between when the work happens and when you experience its effects. Preparing shaders at launch can add loading time. Compiling them just in time, as the game needs them, can interrupt frame delivery and cause stutter. Microsoft describes these general tradeoffs in its Advanced Shader Delivery documentation. That platform feature is not evidence that a particular Call of Duty game uses Advanced Shader Delivery.
How shader preparation affects performance
Before a match
Preloading adds work before you play, which can extend the wait after launch or an update. Activision says preloading in the Modern Warfare 4 Beta is intended to reduce the wait before the first match.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
During a match
If a shader is compiled when the game first needs it, compilation can cause a hitch or stutter. That is one possible source of a performance interruption, not an explanation for every stutter. The available official guidance does not provide a general FPS-loss figure or a controlled benchmark that quantifies the effect across Call of Duty titles.
If preloading is unfinished or interrupted
Activision’s Modern Warfare PC troubleshooting guidance says you can enter a game while shaders are still preloading, but performance might be affected. On that support page, an orange indicator means compilation is ongoing; a red in-game indicator means it is ongoing and creating performance issues. These colors are specific to the guidance for that title and should not be assumed to apply to every release.

For Black Ops 6, Activision’s PC troubleshooting advice says navigating away from the Main Menu stops preloading and can lead to performance issues. It recommends letting the first-boot process finish before playing.
What to do when Call of Duty is compiling shaders
- Identify the exact game and storefront. Shader behavior differs by release and launcher, so use that title’s official instructions rather than assuming one game’s steps apply to another.
- Let first-boot preparation finish when the game’s guidance recommends it. For Black Ops 6, stay in the Main Menu until preloading completes; leaving the menu stops the process according to Activision’s support page.
- Follow any in-game status indicator only as documented for your title. The orange and red indicators described in Activision’s Modern Warfare troubleshooting page are not established as universal Call of Duty indicators.
- For the Modern Warfare 4 Beta, account for the launcher-specific behavior. Activision’s article, dated August 19, 2026, says Battle.net preloading begins with Beta installation. Steam requires a one-time shader compile on first boot, with preloading applying to later updates. The article describes these as Beta-era details and says the full benefit is expected after launch as the game moves to its seasonal update cadence.
- If stutter continues after preparation, use the game’s official troubleshooting steps. Activision’s Black Ops 6 page includes platform-specific guidance for drivers, file repair, and background software. Check the current page for applicable driver information because listed versions can become outdated.
Why the instructions are not universal
Call of Duty releases can differ in when compilation happens—such as on first boot, after installation or an update, or during play—and whether it runs in a menu or in the background. Players may also have different options to interrupt it, and official guidance on starting a match before completion can vary. The documented Modern Warfare 4 Beta and Black Ops 6 behaviors are examples for those specific games, not a reliable cross-title rule. The reviewed official sources do not establish current compile times that can be applied generally.

Microsoft’s Advanced Shader Delivery describes a Windows platform capability that can prepare shaders ahead of time and deliver them with a download. Its documentation lists supported Windows versions, a capable GPU and driver, and storefront integration as prerequisites. It does not establish that any particular Call of Duty release supports the capability; check a current official game source before drawing that conclusion.
