If you mean Sombra, enemy-hero Hack was removed in Overwatch’s October 6, 2026 retail update. Her Hotfix can still hack health packs and most enemy deployables, but damage interrupts that interaction. If you mean Roadhog, Chain Hook depends on line of sight: a corner can block the initial check or break sight during the pull. These are different abilities with different failure conditions.
Why can’t Sombra Hack an enemy hero?
She no longer has that ability in the current kit described by Blizzard’s October 6, 2026 retail patch notes. The update moved Sombra from Damage to Support and removed Hack. Its ability-lockout effect was replaced with Weaken, which halves the target’s damage and healing output.
Older guides, and Blizzard’s Sombra hero page, may still describe the previous enemy Hack. For whether Sombra can currently Hack an enemy hero, the newer dated patch notes take precedence over that older description.
What Sombra can still hack
Sombra’s new Hotfix heals an ally over time. It can also target health packs and most enemy deployables to hack them. The health-pack and deployable interaction has a separate six-second cooldown, and damage interrupts it. Sombra can use it while stealthed; doing so temporarily reveals her without breaking stealth, according to the October 6 patch notes.

Why does Roadhog’s Chain Hook miss or let go?
Chain Hook uses line of sight. Blizzard’s January 2017 retail patch notes specify that the initial line-of-sight check is made from Roadhog’s position, not from the hook. If a target that has been hooked leaves Roadhog’s sightline before the pull finishes, the target is released. Blizzard’s developer comment says the change prevents targets from being hooked or pulled around corners.
Checks for a failed hook
- Check the direct view: At the moment you attempt the hook, look for a wall, corner, or other geometry between Roadhog and the target.
- Check the sightline during the pull: A target can be released if it moves out of Roadhog’s line of sight before the pull completes.
- Check the cooldown: Blizzard’s October 6, 2026 patch notes list Chain Hook’s cooldown as six seconds in 5v5 and seven seconds in 6v6.
- Allow for the current pull behavior: Those notes list a 0.3-second stun after the pull and a final target distance of 4.5 meters from Roadhog. These values describe the ability; they do not guarantee a hook will connect in a particular situation.
Which current ability rules matter?
| Ability or interaction | Current rule in Blizzard’s October 6, 2026 notes |
|---|---|
| Sombra enemy-hero Hack | Removed from her kit. |
| Sombra Hotfix on health packs or enemy deployables | Separate six-second cooldown; damage interrupts the interaction. |
| Roadhog Chain Hook cooldown | Six seconds in 5v5; seven seconds in 6v6. |
| Roadhog Chain Hook after the pull | 0.3 seconds of stun; target ends 4.5 meters from Roadhog. |
These are published ability rules, not a diagnosis of every apparent miss. The cited official descriptions do not establish a universal fix for a particular replay, input issue, server problem, or match-specific interaction. For Sombra, first distinguish the removed enemy Hack from Hotfix’s remaining uses. For Roadhog, check sightline at acquisition and throughout the pull, then confirm the ability is off cooldown.
