If your Astro A50 plays party chat but not game audio, the headset usually is not broken. The usual causes are a Game/Voice balance shifted toward Voice, an incorrect console/PC mode, the wrong output device, or a missing optical, USB-C, or HDMI audio path. Start with the quick checks below, then follow the branch for your A50 generation and platform.
30-second fix
- Press the Game side of the balance control several times, then return the mix to the middle. This is separate from the main volume wheel.
- Raise the master volume and confirm the headset is powered.
- Put the base station in the correct mode: Console for Xbox or PlayStation, PC for a computer (where your model provides a mode switch).
- Re-seat the headset on the base station until it is charging and synchronized.
- Check that the game, console, or computer is outputting to the A50, then fully close and relaunch the game.
Chat working does not prove that game audio is routed correctly. Game and voice can use different endpoints and processing paths.
Identify your A50 before changing cables or resetting it
- Gen 2: older transmitter, commonly dependent on optical audio and model-specific console cabling.
- Gen 3/Gen 4: base station with console/PC operation, optical/USB configurations, and (on supported systems) Astro Command Center.
- Gen 5: USB-C base station with PLAYSYNC Audio; supports Xbox, PlayStation, PC/Mac, and Switch through the specified USB-C connections. Logitech lists up to 24-bit/48 kHz on PC and up to 16-bit/48 kHz on console (product specifications).
- A50 X: HDMI 2.1 base station with PLAYSYNC, USB audio, and separate console/PC routing (product page).
Do not apply an optical-cable procedure to a Gen 5 configured for USB-C, or use an older reset combination without confirming the exact model.
1. Correct the Game/Voice balance
Press the Game control repeatedly and test a game. Then center the balance and raise the main volume wheel. Holding or repeatedly pressing Voice can make game audio effectively silent.

Logitech documents separate A50 Game and A50 Voice endpoints on Windows and macOS, while console behavior varies. Game/Voice balancing is limited or unavailable on PlayStation and Switch for certain A50 generations (Logitech’s MixAmp guide). If the paddles do nothing on your platform, use the platform’s audio mixer instead.
2. Check power, pairing, and mode
- Power on the headset and align its charging contacts with the base station.
- Wait for the station’s indicators to show charging/synchronization, remove the headset, and test again.
- On models with a mode switch, select Console or PC for the device you are using, then re-seat the headset.
- If the headset appears powered but is not detected, try a direct USB port rather than a hub, monitor, KVM, or front-panel extension.
Gen 3 troubleshooting specifically separates console and PC modes and recommends checking volume, balance, pairing, and connections (Logitech support).
3. Verify the physical audio path
Older Gen 2/3/4 optical setups
- Connect USB for power/data and the optical cable at both ends.
- Plug the console end into the transmitter/base station’s Optical In, not a similarly labeled output.
- Replace a loose or sharply bent optical cable and restart the console after reconnecting it.
These checks are documented for older A50 systems (Gen 2 guidance and Gen 3 guidance).
Gen 5
Use the specified USB-C cable from the base station to the console or computer. Confirm the cable is carrying data, not merely charging, and test another direct port.
A50 X
For full PLAYSYNC switching, connect the compatible HDMI 2.1 cables and USB audio connections as shown by Logitech. USB-only operation is possible, but Logitech limits console audio to 16-bit and does not support Nintendo Switch in USB-only mode (USB-only details). HDMI is not required for every A50 X audio setup, but an incorrect HDMI/USB arrangement can leave sound playing through the TV.

4. Select the correct platform output
Xbox
Open Xbox audio settings, assign the A50 as the headset output, check headset volume and the game/chat mixer, and ensure the game is not muted. For older optical Xbox One configurations, Logitech lists HDMI audio off, optical audio set to Bitstream Out, and Dolby Digital selected (older Gen 3 instructions); do not treat those settings as universal for Gen 5 or A50 X.
If Dolby Atmos produces silence on A50 X
Dock the headset, connect it by USB, initialize Dolby Access, and use the Xbox speaker/headset selections in Logitech’s A50 X procedure (official Dolby Atmos troubleshooting). As a diagnostic, test uncompressed or standard stereo. Atmos is optional and platform-specific.

Go to Settings → Sound → Output Device, select the A50 or its connected USB device, set Output to Headphones appropriately, and check the headset volume. With A50 X, select Linear PCM (LPCM) if Dolby Atmos or DTS gives silence; Logitech states that A50 X does not support DTS formats (support article). PLAYSYNC can change TV-speaker behavior when the headset is docked or undocked (Logitech explanation).
Windows
- Right-click the speaker icon and open Sound settings.
- Set ASTRO A50 Game (or the equivalent A50 Game endpoint) as the game output.
- Set ASTRO A50 Voice as Discord or communications output if you want Game/Voice mixing.
- Open Volume Mixer and verify the game is not muted or assigned to another device.
- Check the game’s own output-device menu, then relaunch it.
If the issue began after a driver or Windows change, temporarily disable exclusive mode or spatial-audio enhancements and test again.
macOS
Open System Settings → Sound → Output, choose the A50/Logitech device, check the game’s output setting, and test a browser video or system alert. Confirm chat software has not taken over the Voice endpoint.

5. Check the game itself
If only one title is silent, check master, effects/gameplay, dialogue, and voice-chat volumes; output-device selection; and options such as “mute when in background.” Reset that game’s audio settings before changing firmware. A game may retain an old output device until it is fully closed.

6. Update software and firmware safely
For A50 Gen 5 and A50 X, use Logitech G HUB on PC/Mac or the Logitech G mobile app. Logitech says to select the product tile, open the gear icon, and check Firmware Version (firmware instructions). Older Gen 3/Gen 4 units may use Astro Command Center where supported. Logitech’s old Firmware Update Tool is no longer maintained; avoid unofficial firmware files.
- Connect directly to the computer.
- Update the relevant software and check firmware with the headset docked and powered.
- Restart the computer and console, then test before changing several settings at once.
7. Reset only after identifying the model
A reset can clear a temporary pairing, firmware, or DSP state, but button combinations are generation-dependent. Save EQ/profile settings first. Some older A50 models are commonly reset by holding Dolby and Game for about 15 seconds; confirm that procedure in the manual for your exact model before trying it. If detection fails afterward, power-cycle the headset, base station, and console separately and test another USB port.
8. Isolate a hardware fault
- Test another game.
- Test the A50 on another console or PC.
- Test the same console with another headset.
- Try another direct USB port and, where applicable, another optical/HDMI cable.
- Check whether G HUB, Logitech G App, or Astro Command Center detects the headset.
- Test both ears and inspect charging contacts.
If it works elsewhere, suspect the original console settings, game profile, cable, port, or compatibility. If it fails everywhere while chat works, the game channel, DSP, or headset hardware may be defective. If no computer detects it, suspect the base station, USB path, connector, or firmware. Audio that cuts out when the headset moves points toward contacts or physical hardware.

When to contact Logitech
Contact Logitech support or use warranty service after cross-device testing shows the same failure. Provide the exact generation, platform, connection method, firmware/software version, whether chat works, the tests completed, and photos of the base station and cabling if requested. Warranty support is preferable to buying a replacement while the headset is covered. Consider a replacement only after ruling out a muted game, wrong endpoint, mode switch, cable, and audio-format setting; A50 Gen 5 and A50 X are not interchangeable, and a new headset will not fix incorrect platform routing.

Why does my Astro A50 play chat but not game audio?
Chat and game audio can use separate channels. Center the Game/Voice balance, select the A50 Game endpoint, check the game’s output and volume, and verify the console mixer.
Do I need an optical cable for every Astro A50?
No. Older Gen 2/3/4 configurations commonly use optical audio, while A50 Gen 5 uses USB-C audio and A50 X can use USB and HDMI PLAYSYNC. Follow the connection diagram for your exact model.
Should I use Dolby Atmos, DTS, or LPCM?
It depends on the model and platform. For A50 X on PlayStation, Logitech recommends LPCM when Dolby or DTS is silent and states that DTS is unsupported. Test uncompressed or standard stereo when diagnosing Xbox problems.
When is my A50 probably defective?
