Classic RPGs can feel difficult because several pressures compound: you may need more levels to advance, conserve limited magic for later, learn unfamiliar enemy rules, and risk losing substantial progress when a fight goes badly. Those systems were not universal, though. The examples below come from different games and show distinct design choices—not one formula shared by every older RPG.
Why can classic RPGs make progress feel difficult?
In some games, surviving an encounter and being ready for the next one are separate challenges. A party may win by spending healing or magic, then reach a later fight without enough left. Or the next dungeon may be balanced around higher character levels. If the game offers few alternate routes, that can make repeating earlier combat the practical way forward.
FINAL FANTASY IV director Takashi Tokita recalled that dungeon difficulty was balanced in tiers so players had to level up to get through. He said, “We also balanced the game in this tiered way so you can’t get through dungeons without leveling up, and that might have felt a little challenging.” This is a specific developer’s retrospective about FFIV, not proof that every classic RPG requires grinding.
A historical overview of the original Dragon Quest describes fights as depending heavily on character level. In that kind of progression, gaining levels can make a direct difference to survival. But extra levels do not necessarily solve a problem caused by a poorly understood enemy rule or a resource shortage.

Grinding and resource management are different problems
Grinding builds capability through repetition
Grinding means repeating combat to gain levels, money, or other progression. It can feel especially tedious when a player must repeat low-risk encounters before reaching the next meaningful story beat or tactical choice. Tokita’s account of FFIV is one example of progression acting as a gate: leveling was part of getting through certain dungeons.
Resource management is about when to spend
Resource pressure is not the same as grinding. It asks whether to spend a limited capability now or preserve it for a later threat. Tokita recalled that the original FINAL FANTASY limited how many times magic could be used. When uses are constrained, an ordinary encounter can matter because the spells spent there may not be available for a more dangerous fight.

The distinction matters when deciding what is going wrong. If the party lacks strength, more levels may help. If the party is strong enough but has spent its magic or healing too freely, repeating fights may not address the underlying problem.
Why can a familiar attack trigger a counter?
Some older RPGs expect players to learn enemy-specific rules rather than assume that an attack that seems appropriate is always safe. Tokita described FFIV enemies that react to player actions: an elemental attack a player might expect to be effective could provoke a counter. With FFIV’s Active Time Battle system, those counters could happen between the player’s ordinary attacks, making timing part of the danger.

Tokita also recalled a design culture in which developers expected players to experiment and share discoveries in person, when internet access was not a routine source of answers. That is his retrospective, not a universal account of how every player or studio approached games in the 1980s and 1990s. For players encountering such a game now, the useful lesson is to treat enemy reactions as rules to observe, not as exceptions that extra levels will necessarily overcome.
What makes old save systems feel punishing?
Save access changes the cost of failure. A difficult fight near a save point may be a manageable retry; the same fight after a long stretch without saving can put hours of progress at stake. Character death can impose a different cost again: instead of losing time or returning to an earlier point, the player may lose a character or another valuable asset.

Long stretches between saves
Tokita contrasted the final dungeon of FINAL FANTASY III, which he remembered as having no save points, with FINAL FANTASY IV, which added a save point before its boss. He recalled that some players disliked the clear advance signal that a boss was coming. The examples illustrate how save placement can make otherwise similar combat feel more or less risky.
Character loss and reset behavior
In an official interview about Wizardry, an interviewee identified as Mamoru described character death as severe: “Unlike modern games, permadeath of a character was detrimental, with absolute no forgiveness.” He also described players using resets and save-scumming to protect their characters. That is not the same setback as a long return to a save point; the threat is the loss of a character and the effort invested in it.

How to identify the source of difficulty in a game
When a classic RPG feels unfair, separate the pressures before deciding what to change. These questions help distinguish a progression gate from a resource, information, or save problem:
- Progression: Are enemies consistently outpacing the party, and are there few alternate routes or tactics?
- Resources: Does reaching later fights with too little magic, healing, or another finite capability cause the trouble?
- Enemy behavior: Do certain actions provoke counters or reactions that are not obvious at first?
- Recovery: How much health, magic, or other capability returns between encounters?
- Failure cost: Does defeat cost time, money, progress, or a character?
- Save access: How far apart are save points, and can you save before a major risk?
- Encounter pressure: How frequent are encounters, and can you avoid them?
These are comparison questions, not a formal ranking. They help explain why two games—and two editions of the same game—can feel difficult for different reasons.
Can newer editions reduce the friction?
Some later versions give players direct control over parts of the experience. In its 2023 announcement of the console versions of FINAL FANTASY Pixel Remaster, Square Enix listed options to switch off random encounters and adjust experience multipliers from zero to four. Those features apply to the announced console versions; they should not be assumed to exist in every platform version or in the original releases.
Difficulty also reflects the priorities of the people making a game. Tokita said that challenge and extending play time mattered to developers in his earlier work, and contrasted that with a more recent emphasis on a smooth difficulty slope that avoids making players repeat things. He described a change in his own perspective, not a rule that applies to all studios or players.
