He called that uncertainty fun from his perspective—not proof that players broadly enjoyed being confused. Powers also acknowledged the game was announced too early and said Pearl Abyss later tried to clarify its direction with extended gameplay access and more interviews.
What Powers meant by “fun”
In an interview with PC Gamer, Powers described the uncertainty around Crimson Desert as a consequence of how early it was revealed. “But as a result of this situation, what happened is it created this air of mystique around it where people didn’t really know what the game was, and that’s become fun from my perspective,” he said.

The qualification matters: “fun” was Powers’s own view of the unusual attention and speculation, not a claim about how all players felt. He also acknowledged that the game had been announced too early. The project changed over time, and Pearl Abyss built an engine while developing it, leaving the studio with ground to make up after the initial presentation had given audiences a different impression.
How Pearl Abyss tried to clear up the confusion
Powers said the company responded by allowing people to play for hours and doing more interviews. The goal was to show what the game had become rather than leave its identity defined by the early reveal. Those efforts explain the studio’s response; they do not, by themselves, establish whether its marketing ultimately succeeded.

The interview also describes Pearl Abyss’s caution about overhyping the game or setting expectations it could not meet. Powers said the studio preferred to frame it as an open-world action-adventure rather than lean on an RPG label that might suggest features or a style the team felt did not accurately represent the experience.
What kind of game Crimson Desert is now
Pearl Abyss currently describes Crimson Desert as an open-world action-adventure. Its official overview sets the story in Pywel and follows Kliff as he tries to reunite the scattered Greymanes after an ambush. The publisher highlights exploration, combat, skills, weapons, and equipment; these are the company’s descriptions, not an independent assessment of the game.

The game launched on March 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Mac, according to Pearl Abyss’s launch announcement. Its official page lists digital and physical Standard, Deluxe, and Collector’s editions. Listings can change, so consult the publisher’s page for current platform and edition availability.

The interview gives a company representative’s account of a long development and marketing transition: an early announcement, a project that changed, and a later effort to explain its identity through gameplay and interviews. It helps explain why audiences had questions, but it is not evidence that confusion was universal or that the strategy worked. Genre comparisons mentioned in the interview should not be taken to mean Crimson Desert is equivalent to those other games.

For the current release, the clearest answer is Pearl Abyss’s own label: open-world action-adventure. The “mystique” remark is best read as Powers reflecting on the uncertainty created by the early reveal, not as the studio saying that players should remain unsure what they are buying.
Current update
In an announcement dated September 30, 2026, Pearl Abyss moved the release of the Charting the Unknown DLC by two weeks, to October 29, 2026. This is a time-sensitive date; check the publisher’s DLC update for any later changes.
