But the available lore does not establish why Godwyn specifically was targeted—or whether Ranni chose him herself.
Ranni’s motive: escape the Two Fingers
Ranni’s broad aim was to break free of the Two Fingers, who sought to direct her fate as an Empyrean. A secondary account of the game’s lore says she orchestrated the plot and stole a fragment of the Rune of Death to empower the assassins’ weapons. That is the strategic motive the account supports; it does not establish a personal feud with Godwyn.
How the Night of the Black Knives served that plan
The Rune of Death and the assassins
The official Bandai Namco history of the Lands Between says the Rune of Death was stolen and assassins attacked members of Marika’s family. The secondary lore account connects Ranni to the theft and to the Black Knife Assassins’ empowered weapons.
The paired deaths
The lore account describes the ritual as a paired death: Godwyn’s soul died, while Ranni’s body died. Ranni’s spirit survived, and the Cursemark was divided into two halves. The game’s Black Knifeprint investigation, involving Rogier, is one route by which the player learns of Ranni’s role.

Why Godwyn was the target remains uncertain
The available account does not explain why Godwyn in particular was selected or establish that Ranni knew in advance whom the assassins would kill. Bandai Namco’s description says multiple members of Marika’s family were attacked, but does not identify who chose Godwyn as a target. Claims that Ranni singled him out to hurt Marika, settle a grudge, or pursue a specific political objective go beyond what these accounts establish.

Bandai Namco’s official story places Godwyn’s death before the Shattering of the Elden Ring, but says the Ring was “somehow shattered,” leaving the precise cause unexplained. Its trailer narration says: “The rune of death was stolen / And the demigods began to fall, starting with Godwyn the Golden. / Queen Marika was driven to the brink. / The Shattering ensued; a war that wrought only darkness.” This is the in-world storyteller’s narration, not an explanation of exactly how Godwyn’s death caused the Ring to shatter.
