In Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, Lilith, Roland, and Moxxi turn on Jack because they decide the Eye gives him too much dangerous power, so they destroy it. In Borderlands 2, Angel, who has been helping Jack manipulate the Vault Hunters, stops working for him and helps the player instead. Jack is betrayed in both games, but the motives and the mechanics are separate.
Which betrayal you mean
The word “they” points to different groups depending on the game. Asking which one you mean matters, because merging the two events produces a misleading timeline. The Pre-Sequel’s betrayal is a group of former allies acting against Jack’s access to a power source. Borderlands 2’s betrayal is one character, Angel, withdrawing support from a plan she had been part of.
Lilith, Roland, and Moxxi in The Pre-Sequel
The Pre-Sequel presents Lilith, Roland, and Moxxi as allies who help Jack regain the Eye before they decide he should not control its power. Their sabotage is a reaction to the danger they associate with giving Jack that power. It is a preventive move: they destroy the Eye so that Jack cannot use it, rather than trying to take control of it themselves.
The available accounts support their stated concern about the Eye. They do not present that concern as a full explanation for everything Jack later does. Jack’s broader villainy across both games has causes beyond this one decision, so it is safer to treat the trio’s action as one event in his story rather than the source of his later behavior.

Angel in Borderlands 2
Angel is revealed as Jack’s daughter and as the voice that has guided the Vault Hunters. The story shows that Jack was using her, and through her the Hunters, in pursuit of his Vault plan. Her defection is the point where she stops assisting that plan and aids the player against him.
The available accounts establish the change in allegiance and its link to Jack’s scheme. They do not spell out her personal reasoning in detail, so a reader who wants a fully sourced explanation of her inner motives should expect some inference from the plot rather than a direct statement.
A mission transcript attributed to Angel includes the line “We don’t have long until Jack realizes I’m not helping him anymore.” That transcript comes from a fan-maintained wiki rather than an official script, so check the wording in the game before quoting it in print.
The two betrayals side by side
| Betrayal | Game | Who changes sides | Motive as presented |
|---|---|---|---|
| Eye sabotage | Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel | Lilith, Roland, and Moxxi | They judge the Eye’s power too dangerous for Jack and destroy it to stop him using it. |
| Change of allegiance | Borderlands 2 | Angel | She stops helping Jack’s Vault plan and aids the Vault Hunters. Her full personal reasoning is not spelled out in the available accounts. |
Why the distinction matters
Both betrayals are connected to Jack’s pursuit of power, but they should not be read as one turn of events. The Pre-Sequel’s betrayal is about preventing Jack from holding the Eye’s power. Borderlands 2’s betrayal is about Angel ending her role in a manipulation that had made her complicit. Keeping them separate avoids the common mistake of attributing Angel’s defection to the trio, or the trio’s sabotage to Angel.

Verifying quotes and plot details
- Check any dialogue against the game itself, since the mission transcript used by fan wikis is not an official script.
- Name the game each time you describe a betrayal, especially in headlines or social posts where “they” is ambiguous.
- Treat plot summaries from fan-maintained wikis as secondary. Official game dialogue and in-game events take priority.
Short answer
Lilith, Roland, and Moxxi destroy the Eye in The Pre-Sequel because they believe Jack would be too dangerous with its power. Angel turns against Jack in Borderlands 2 because she stops helping him carry out a plan that used her and the Vault Hunters.
