The series later explains how that practice became a tradition: Bayek loses his ring finger in a partially botched assassination in Assassin’s Creed Origins. It was not a requirement of every later blade; designs changed, and the ring finger could instead be marked symbolically.
Why does Altaïr lose his ring finger?
Ubisoft’s history of the weapon says the Hidden Blade carried by Altaïr, the Levantine Assassin in the first game, required the sacrifice of his left ring finger to wield it properly. That is the direct explanation for the scene: the early weapon’s design is tied to the sacrifice. Ubisoft’s account of the Hidden Blade’s evolution also notes that the weapon may have been inspired by historical accounts of real-life Assassins hiding knives in their sleeves.
How did the sacrifice become an Assassin tradition?
The later in-universe explanation comes from Assassin’s Creed Origins. During a partially botched assassination, Bayek’s Hidden Blade severs his ring finger. Ubisoft says that injury established a tradition carried down through the centuries by the Hidden Ones and the Assassins who followed. Bayek’s accident explains the custom’s fictional origin; it is separate from the explanation that Altaïr’s particular blade required the sacrifice for proper use.
Did every Assassin have to lose a finger?
No. The sacrifice was not a permanent mechanical requirement. Ubisoft’s account of the Brotherhood’s history says innovations introduced with Assassin’s Creed II made it possible to wield two Hidden Blades without sacrificing a finger. In Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood, the ring finger could also be marked through a symbolic branding ceremony during Master Assassin initiation rather than severed. The practice therefore changed from an early weapon-linked sacrifice into a tradition that could be represented symbolically. Ubisoft’s Brotherhood history describes those later changes.
