A slow game download, a long startup, a level that takes ages to appear, and a login that hangs are different problems. Downloads and online waits point first to the network or servers; slow launches and level loads more often involve storage, files, system activity, or the game itself. Identify which kind of wait you have before changing settings or buying hardware.

Quick answer: five common causes

  1. The game is on a slow or unhealthy drive.
  2. Storage is nearly full or busy with other work.
  3. Background apps are competing for system resources.
  4. Game files, temporary data, or an update are damaged or inconsistent.
  5. The wait comes from online services, game design, or hardware limits.

First, identify what is taking so long

“Loading” can describe several stages, and each points to a different set of causes. Download speed is measured in Mbps or MB/s; it depends on your connection, Wi-Fi, router, other network traffic, and the platform’s download servers. A game that has downloaded but is still installing may be unpacking, rewriting, or verifying files, so installation can take much longer than the download itself.

What is slow? Likely areas to check first
Downloading a game or update Internet connection, Wi-Fi, router, other downloads, or platform servers
Installing or applying an update Free space, disk writes, unpacking, file rewriting, or verification
Starting the game Storage, game files, launcher checks, anti-cheat, shader preparation, or asset indexing
Loading a save or level Storage reads, CPU decompression, memory pressure, or the game’s asset-streaming design
Signing in or joining a match Publisher services, authentication, connection quality, DNS, or NAT

Microsoft’s guidance for Windows game developers notes that local-drive access and inefficient file access can contribute to long in-game loads: Microsoft Learn: common issues for Windows titles.

Reason 1: The game is installed on a slow or unhealthy drive

A mechanical hard disk drive (HDD) has moving parts and takes longer than a solid-state drive (SSD) to find and read many scattered files. Moving a storage-bound game from an HDD to an SSD can make loads noticeably shorter, though the improvement varies by game and platform. SATA and NVMe SSDs are both much better suited to modern games than an HDD; an NVMe drive’s higher advertised sequential speed does not guarantee proportionally shorter game loads. For many players, the more meaningful change is HDD to SSD, not SATA SSD to a premium NVMe model.

Storage is a stronger suspect if several games on the same drive have become slow, or if Windows shows sustained high disk activity during a load while CPU and network activity are modest. A drive that has suddenly slowed, disappears intermittently, reports errors, or is associated with repeated file corruption deserves attention as a possible failing drive—not just a performance tweak.

External storage adds more variables: the USB port, cable, enclosure, filesystem, and platform support can all limit performance. Some current-generation console games must run from internal storage or a platform-approved expansion drive. Check the console maker’s compatibility requirements before buying or moving a game.

Reason 2: Storage is too full or busy

Low free space can complicate temporary files, caching, and update installation. A patch that appears small as a download may still require a launcher to stage, unpack, verify, or rewrite much larger game files. A launcher may also use a different, slower disk for temporary patch data than the one holding the installed game. There is no universal free-space percentage that guarantees good performance; leave enough room for the operating system, temporary operations, and the largest updates you expect to install.

On a Windows PC, check the game drive and look for competing disk work:

  1. Open File Explorer → This PC and check the free space on the game’s drive.
  2. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
  3. Choose Processes or Performance → Disk, then launch the game and watch for sustained high activity on that drive.
  4. Look for another process performing heavy reads or writes, such as a launcher update, cloud sync, backup, antivirus scan, or Windows Update.

Microsoft lists limited storage, background applications, outdated software, and hardware limitations among causes of slow Windows performance: Microsoft Support: tips to improve PC performance in Windows.

Reason 3: Other apps are competing for resources

Browsers with many tabs, game launchers updating other titles, cloud-sync tools, recording software, overlays, mod managers, backup jobs, indexing, virtual machines, and security scans can compete for disk access, CPU time, or memory. If memory is constrained, the system may page data to disk, adding more storage activity and making loads feel slower.

Try this low-risk sequence before changing system settings:

  1. Close other games and launchers, and pause downloads or cloud synchronization.
  2. Close unnecessary browser tabs and optional recording or overlay tools.
  3. Restart the PC or console, then test the game before reopening optional apps.
  4. If the delay goes away, restore apps one at a time to find the conflict.

On Windows, unnecessary startup items can be disabled through Task Manager → Startup apps: right-click an item you recognize and do not need at startup, then choose Disable. Do not indiscriminately disable security software; a permanent reduction in protection is not a safe general fix. If a security scan seems involved, use only a controlled test or a properly supported game-folder exclusion, understanding the security trade-off. EA also recommends investigating background tasks and repairing game files when troubleshooting freezes and related issues: EA: fix crashing and freezing.

Reason 4: Game files, cache, or updates are damaged

Suspect a game-specific installation problem when one title is slow but others load normally, a load repeatedly hangs at the same point, or the issue began after an interrupted update, crash, mod change, or storage error. Verification can reacquire missing or corrupted installation files, but it cannot fix a server outage or a failing drive.

Verify a game’s files in Steam

  1. Open Steam → Library.
  2. Right-click the game and choose Properties.
  3. Open Installed Files, then select Verify integrity of game files.
  4. Let Steam validate or reacquire files, then restart Steam and test the game.

Labels may vary with Steam client updates. Steam’s support guidance discusses corrupted game files and software conflicts: Steam Support: game files and software conflicts.

On consoles, use documented recovery options

Check for game and system updates, restart or fully power down the console, and use only cache-clearing, storage-repair, or database options documented for your specific platform and software version. Procedures differ; unofficial button combinations are not universal. PlayStation’s support guidance covers updates, network testing, and storage management: PlayStation: check game and system software versions. Activision notes that corrupted cached data can cause connectivity problems, freezes, and slow or unsuccessful loads: Activision: clearing cache and deleting files.

Before reinstalling a game or removing mods, protect your saves: confirm cloud synchronization has completed or make a supported backup. Deleting save data can permanently erase progress. Reinstall only after using available repair or verification options, since it can consume substantial time and bandwidth without addressing a network, server, or hardware cause.

Reason 5: The wait comes from online services, game design, or hardware

Network and server waits

Some games must authenticate, check entitlements, contact publisher services, or find a lobby before they reach the menu. A fast internet plan cannot make a busy platform server respond faster. Wi-Fi interference, weak signal, router congestion, household traffic, data limits, or a VPN can also affect downloads and online sessions. If an offline game is already installed locally and its save loads slowly, upgrading internet service is unlikely to help.

For a download or online-only delay, test another service, pause other downloads, run the device’s built-in network test, and try Ethernet temporarily if practical. Restart the router and gaming device, check the platform or publisher’s service status, and test without a VPN if you use one. If only an online game or update is affected, testing at another time can help distinguish local connection trouble from server load. EA’s connection guidance includes checking service status, testing the connection, and restarting a console: EA: troubleshoot online connection problems.

Game-specific preparation and design

A first launch—or the first launch after a game or graphics-driver update—may take longer while shaders or other derived data are prepared. Anti-cheat initialization, asset indexing, mod scanning, CPU decompression, and large asset packages can also add time. These steps are not necessarily signs of a fault, and an SSD cannot eliminate a wait caused by server authentication, shader compilation, CPU work, or inefficient game code.

Mods and add-ons can make startup slower if a game scans many files, rebuilds a load order, or encounters outdated content. Test with a clean, unmodded profile before blaming the base game. Back up saves and follow the game or mod manager’s instructions before removing content. Microsoft’s Windows game guidance identifies mod/add-on file checks among possible causes of long startup times: Microsoft Learn: common issues for Windows titles.

Hardware limits

Minimum requirements generally indicate that a game can run, not that it will load quickly. Recommended requirements often focus on playable frame rates and image quality rather than load times. A CPU can limit decompression, shader work, or initialization; insufficient available RAM can cause paging; a hot CPU, GPU, SSD, or laptop can throttle sustained performance. Older consoles may load modern, larger games slowly because their hardware and storage are fixed. More RAM, a faster GPU, or a newer CPU helps only when that component is actually the bottleneck.

Find the likely cause in five minutes

  • Only one game is affected: Check its files, mods, latest update, and game-specific startup behavior.
  • Every game on one drive is affected: Check drive type and health, free space, thermal conditions, and disk-heavy background work.
  • Only downloads or online games are affected: Check the connection, other network traffic, authentication, and service status.
  • Disk activity is near maximum during a load: The drive or another disk-intensive process is a likely bottleneck.
  • Memory is nearly full and disk activity spikes: Background applications or paging may be contributing.
  • CPU use spikes while disk activity is modest: Shader work, decompression, simulation setup, or CPU limits are more plausible.
  • The issue began after an update or crash: Verify or repair files and check for a follow-up update; use only documented cache procedures.
  • All games remain slow after a clean reinstall: Investigate system software, drive health, temperature, or hardware rather than repeatedly reinstalling titles.

When an SSD upgrade is worth considering

Consider storage hardware only after the free checks point to storage. An SSD is a sensible candidate when games are on a mechanical HDD, multiple titles on that drive load slowly, disk activity is saturated, or the drive shows signs of age or errors. Check the computer or console’s physical format, interface, capacity, thermal, and compatibility requirements before buying. A larger compatible SSD may be more useful than a faster, smaller one if you are constantly short of room for games and update staging.

Do not pay a premium for headline sequential read speeds alone: real game-load gains vary by title, and the drive, connection, and platform all matter. For an external drive, verify that the specific platform and games can run from it, and account for the port, enclosure, and cable. Avoid buying storage to solve a slow download, online login delay, one-game file problem, or first-run shader preparation; those symptoms point elsewhere.

What not to do

  • Do not delete saved games as a cache-clearing shortcut; protect progress before repair or reinstall steps.
  • Do not permanently disable antivirus, firewall, or other security protections to test a game.
  • Do not buy a faster internet plan for a locally stored game that loads slowly offline.
  • Do not assume a flagship NVMe drive is necessary when the current problem may be an HDD, full drive, damaged files, or another bottleneck.
  • Do not use unsupported console cache procedures, registry cleaners, RAM cleaners, or one-click “game booster” utilities.
  • Do not confuse a small download with a small installation task: patching can involve rewriting much larger files.

When to repair, reinstall, upgrade, or seek support

  • Repair or verify when one game is affected, especially after a crash or interrupted update.
  • Reinstall only after supported repair options fail and saves are protected.
  • Consider an SSD when several games on an HDD are storage-bound; investigate or replace a drive that reports errors or repeatedly disappears.
  • Contact the publisher or platform when the wait involves an account, entitlement, server, or authentication problem, or when documented troubleshooting does not resolve a console issue.
  • Seek hardware diagnosis when performance has deteriorated across games, the drive produces errors, or high temperatures and throttling persist.

Microsoft’s Windows guidance also covers game installation, local-drive loading, and update workflows: Microsoft Learn: installation and maintenance of games.
