No official explanation from Respawn Entertainment or Lucasfilm for Cal Kestis’s single glove has been found. The best-sourced in-story reason is occupational: the glove belongs to the scrapper work outfit, and a thick welding glove protects his hand from the sharp metal he handles on the job. A widely repeated fan explanation, that the glove blocks his Force-sensing from showing him the history of everything he touches, is commenter speculation rather than a developer statement. Why only the left hand is gloved is not explained in any source found.
Which game the glove belongs to
Cal Kestis is the protagonist of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order (2019) and its sequel Star Wars Jedi: Survivor (2023), as listed on the Cal Kestis, Fallen Order and Survivor reference pages. The sources reviewed for this piece do not establish which of the two games first gave Cal the single glove, so this article does not assign it to either.

What is and is not established
- Established: The glove is part of a manual-labour look that a guide ties to Cal’s scrapper work, and the guide attributes the glove’s purpose to protection from sharp metals.
- Not established: That the glove was a deliberate design decision tied to that purpose. The guide describes what the glove does in the story, not why the designers chose it.
- Speculation: The Force-sensing or “echo ability” explanation, which appears only in anonymous fan commentary.
- Unexplained: Why only the left hand is gloved.
The in-story explanation: a scrapper’s work gloves
The clearest answer the sources give is practical. Cal’s scrapper look includes a welding glove as part of a work outfit, and a guide on how to unlock the Scrapper outfit in Jedi: Survivor, published by VULKK on May 12, 2023, says the thick glove protects him against the sharp metals a scrapper handles every day. Taken on its own terms, that is a reason the character would wear protection on his hand while working.
Where the glove sits in the outfit
Concept-art notes by Jordan Lamarre-Wan, posted to ArtStation under a Fallen Order Cal Kestis label, describe the uniform as a deliberately downplayed manual-labour look. As summarized in the search results used for this piece, the list includes a welding vest, harness, welding torch, tool belt, pouches, a welding glove and a communicator. The same notes say the design had to read clearly in silhouette, keep the limbs unobstructed, and reflect a hiding theme that ruled out a traditional Jedi appearance. The notes do not explain why the glove covers only one hand. The wording is paraphrased here, not quoted.

#1 Best Overall
- No longer a Padawan, Cal has come into his own and grown into a powerful Jedi Knight; Carrying the memories and expectations of the Jedi Order with him, his crusade against the Empire has only become more perilous
- The cinematic combat system returns with additional Force abilities and new lightsaber fighting styles; Creatively leverage all these abilities and weapons to strategically take on an expanded host of enemies, sizing up strengths and weaknesses
- Discover new planets and familiar frontiers in the Star Wars galaxy, each with unique biomes, challenges, and enemies; Master new skills, equipment, and abilities that will augment the ways you explore, fight, and roam
- With larger areas to explore and more to discover off the beaten path, players who adventure beyond the horizon will find hidden rewards
What the guide does not say
The VULKK guide treats the glove as protective gear within the story. It does not present the single glove as a costume choice made by the developers, and it does not explain handedness. That gap matters: a reader can treat the job explanation as the most grounded in-game reason, but not as proof of the designers’ intent.
The echo-ability theory
A fan Q&A on Vintage Is the New Old, titled “Why does Cal Kestis wear one glove?”, includes commenters who say Cal first wore the glove on one hand as part of the job, for handling more dangerous things, and kept wearing it afterward so his echo ability would not constantly show him the history of objects he touches. The idea fits the game’s Force-sensing lore, which is why it circulates, but it is the opinion of anonymous commenters.
Rank #2
- Continue Cal’s Journey - No longer a Padawan, Cal has come into his own and grown into a powerful Jedi Knight.
- Go Beyond Your Training – The cinematic combat system returns with additional Force abilities and new lightsaber fighting styles.
- Explore an Untamed Galaxy – Discover new planets and familiar frontiers in the Star Wars galaxy, each with unique challenges, and enemies.
- The Dark Times are closing in – with enemies surrounding him, Cal will need to decide how far he’s willing to go to save those closest to him.
No developer, Lucasfilm representative or official document was found confirming it. Treat it as a fan interpretation, not as canon.
Why only the left hand?
None of the sources examined gives a reason for the left-only glove. The job explanation accounts for wearing a glove, not for covering one hand and leaving the other bare, and the echo-ability theory does not explain handedness either. Any specific reason offered for the left hand would be guesswork at this point.

Where an official answer might be
The most authoritative place to look is Lucasfilm’s “look back” interview with the Star Wars Jedi: Survivor team on starwars.com, The Star Wars Jedi: Survivor Team Drills Down Into Cal Kestis’ Story. It came up in searches for this topic, but whether it addresses the glove was not confirmed. Until a developer or Lucasfilm source says otherwise, the glove’s origin should be described as unexplained.
The explanations side by side
| Explanation | Source type | Who says it | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Protection from sharp metal on the scrapper job | Guide (VULKK, May 12, 2023) | Named guide, describing the in-story outfit | In-story reason; not described as a design decision |
| Echo ability keeps showing him the history of objects | Fan Q&A (Vintage Is the New Old) | Anonymous commenters | Fan speculation; not confirmed by developers |
| Design intent behind the single glove | Concept-art notes (Jordan Lamarre-Wan, ArtStation) | Artist’s notes on the uniform | Notes describe the outfit’s goals, not the glove’s handedness |
| Why only the left hand is gloved | None found | Not stated | Unexplained in the sources reviewed |
Recreating the one-glove look
If you want the costume, the most direct match is a left-hand-only glove. Retro Revival Props sells a Jedi Fallen Order Cal Kestis left-hand-only glove listed as a preorder; availability and delivery timing should be checked on the seller’s page. Magic Wardrobes lists wrist guards and gloves for Cal’s black Inquisitor battle suit, but the listing does not confirm a single glove, so check the product images before buying. Etsy has a Cal Kestis glove category where individual makers sell their own versions.
Rank #4
Cosplay gloves are a recreation of the look, not evidence of how the game’s designers made the choice.
