There isn’t enough information in the question alone to identify one cause. The first things to check are the concat method, the playlist’s file entries and paths, and whether the story files have compatible streams, codecs, and time bases. For ordinary MP4 files, a concat-demuxer list is often the right place to start; the concat protocol is not a general-purpose playlist method.
First, identify which concat method your command uses
FFmpeg has three concat approaches for different situations. If a command uses the wrong one, it may not process a sequence of story files as intended.

If your goal is simply to play several story files in order, check whether you are using the concat demuxer rather than the concat protocol.
Check the concat-demuxer playlist
The demuxer reads a text script with one file directive for each input. For example:

file 'story-3.mp4'For FFmpeg to recognize the script automatically, ffconcat version 1.0 must be exactly at the beginning of the file. Make sure every intended story has its own file line and that the script is saved where the command expects it. See the concat demuxer documentation.
Quote filenames with spaces or special characters
Paths that contain spaces or special characters need correct quoting or escaping. A malformed entry may prevent FFmpeg from opening a file. Check that the quotes enclose the path correctly and that the spelling and file extension match the actual file.

Check whether safe-path rules reject an entry
The concat demuxer defaults to safe=1, which allows relative paths made from a limited portable character set. An absolute path or a path with other characters may be rejected. For a playlist you trust and have checked, -safe 0 can allow such paths. Do not use it blindly with an untrusted list: verify every entry first. Details are in the concat demuxer options.
Check that the story files are compatible
For the concat demuxer, the inputs need to have the same streams, codecs, and time base. For example, a set where one file has a different stream structure or codec may not form a valid virtual concatenation. Differences can lead to errors or playback artifacts rather than a clean transition between stories. FFmpeg describes these requirements in its concat demuxer documentation.

Also consider file durations. Stored or incorrect duration information can affect how the demuxer adjusts timestamps between files. If the playlist parses but the next file starts at an unexpected time, inspect the input durations and the resulting log output.

“Stops after the first file” can describe several different outcomes: FFmpeg may reject the next path, fail to open the second input, encounter incompatible streams, or finish because the command did not actually provide a multi-file concat input. The symptom alone does not distinguish them.

To diagnose a particular playlist, gather these details together:
- The exact FFmpeg command, including all options and the output target.
- The full text of the playlist file, preserving its first line and punctuation.
- The FFmpeg version.
- The formats and stream details of the input files.
- The complete error message or log from the point where processing stops.
With those details, you can tell whether the issue is the concat method, list syntax, path handling, input compatibility, or something else. Without them, no single cause can be stated reliably.
