On Windows PC, the most likely reason Minecraft asks you to buy the game you already own is that the Minecraft Launcher or Microsoft Store is signed in to a Microsoft account that does not own Minecraft. Minecraft Help describes this directly: if the Play button is missing, the player is “likely signed into a Microsoft account that doesn’t own Minecraft.” That is the first thing to check, but it is a likely cause rather than a confirmed one, and the steps below are written to tell you which situation applies to you.
What the message is actually telling you
The Launcher does not check whether you own Minecraft in general. It checks whether the Microsoft account currently signed in has a license for the specific edition you are trying to open. If that account has no license, the Launcher shows a purchase option where you expected Play. Minecraft Help’s ownership guide puts it this way: “The Play or Install button display if you own that version of Minecraft.” The same guide describes the Buy Now state for a version the account does not own.
So the message usually means one of three things: the wrong account is signed in, the wrong edition is being checked, or the purchase was made on a different platform than the one you are using. Work through them in that order.
Step 1: Confirm which account is signed in
Most mismatches are fixed at this step. Sign out of both applications, then sign back in with the account that bought Minecraft or the account that holds the applicable PC Game Pass subscription.

- In Minecraft Launcher, open the account menu, select the option to log out, and sign back in with the purchase account.
- In Microsoft Store, sign out and sign back in with that same account.
- Confirm the two match. A Launcher signed in to one account while the Store is signed in to another is a common way to end up with the wrong entitlement showing.
- Return to the Launcher and check whether the Play or Install button now appears for the edition you want.
If you are not sure which account made the purchase, check the Minecraft page in Microsoft Store while signed in to each account you use. The Store page shows ownership for whichever account is currently signed in, which lets you find the matching one without guessing.
Step 2: Check the edition you are actually opening
Since the PC release bundled Java Edition and Bedrock Edition, the two are checked separately. An account can own one and show Buy Now for the other. Minecraft Help dates the Java and Bedrock for PC bundle to June 7, 2022, and says players who own that PC version, or who migrated a Mojang account, should have access to both PC versions. If a purchase predates that bundle or came through a different route, the edition you see may depend on how the account was set up, so confirm each edition individually.

You can also check ownership on the Java & Bedrock for PC product page in Microsoft Store while signed in to the relevant account. If Java shows Play and Bedrock shows Buy Now, you have a PC edition mismatch, not a lost purchase.
Step 3: Check the purchase history
Microsoft states that digital purchases appear in Order history for the Microsoft account used to buy them. If the purchase is not listed under the account you are signed in to, you have found the mismatch, and the fix is to sign in with the account that does appear in the history.

If the purchase does appear but the game still does not install, Microsoft notes that a missing install can relate to account authorization, compatibility, region, family settings, or availability. Those are separate problems from ownership, and they need separate checks.
Platform matters: a PC purchase is not a console or mobile purchase
The Minecraft end user license agreement treats each platform as its own purchasing context. A purchase made through PlayStation, Nintendo, Apple, Google Play, or Steam is governed by that platform’s terms, not by a Microsoft account on PC. The official material reviewed does not establish that owning the game on one platform grants access on another, so do not assume a PC license covers a console or phone, or the reverse.

If you bought Minecraft on a console or phone and are trying to play it on PC, the Launcher’s Buy Now prompt may be accurate. Check the store you bought from before assuming a PC purchase is required or that one is missing.

- Confirm the Launcher and Microsoft Store are signed in to the same purchase account.
- Use the repair or update options Microsoft provides for its Store apps, then restart the Launcher.
- Recheck the Play or Install button for each edition.
- If the mismatch remains, contact Minecraft support with proof of purchase: the order number or receipt, the purchase date, the Microsoft account email, and the edition and platform you bought.
Reinstalling the Launcher is not shown in the official material to restore a license, so treat it as a troubleshooting step for the app rather than a fix for ownership.
What this does not establish
- It does not prove that account mismatch is the cause in your case. It is the first and most common check, not a diagnosis.
- It does not show that every platform purchase transfers to every other platform.
- No published statistic on how often this error occurs, or how often these steps resolve it, was found in official Minecraft or Microsoft material. Treat any percentage you see elsewhere as unverified.
The cases that stay unresolved after these checks usually need a support ticket with purchase evidence, not another round of Launcher restarts.
