Miller turns against Big Boss because he learns that the Snake he has backed is Venom, a body double—and that the real Big Boss kept him outside the deception. The revelation makes Miller’s work building and supporting Diamond Dogs feel like complicity in a betrayal by his closest partner, not just a military miscalculation.
What the ending reveals
For most of The Phantom Pain, Miller believes he is helping Big Boss recover and take revenge. The ending reveals that the Snake leading Diamond Dogs is Venom Snake, while the real Big Boss has been operating separately. Miller has therefore spent the campaign supporting a phantom of the man he thought was at his side.
That distinction changes the meaning of Miller’s alliance. His rejection is not simply a sudden change of allegiance: from his perspective, Big Boss concealed the truth and used the Big Boss identity while Miller helped build the force around the double. The game’s reveal supports this reading, though Konami’s background pages do not directly explain Miller’s final reaction.
Why the deception cuts so deeply
Miller and Big Boss were long-time partners
Konami’s chronology traces their relationship back to 1972. Big Boss saved and recruited Kazuhira Miller, and the two formed Militaires Sans Frontières (MSF). Miller is not a new associate whom Big Boss met in Afghanistan; he is a partner with years of shared history.

The MSF disaster gave them a common cause
In 1974, MSF was based at Mother Base, and the events of Peace Walker deepened the conflict between Big Boss and Zero. In 1975, Big Boss and Kaz went to rescue Chico and Paz, and the attack on MSF cost them their base and comrades. The story of The Phantom Pain carries that loss forward: its 1984 campaign is framed around revenge against Cipher for the slaughter nine years earlier.
That shared history helps explain why the body-double plan can feel to Miller like abandonment as well as deception. He has helped sustain the cause and the legend without being told that the man he thought he was supporting was not the real Big Boss.

Why Miller’s rescue does not prevent the break
In the 1984 setup, Snake returns from a coma and learns that his former partner Miller is being held by Soviet forces in Afghanistan. Rescuing Miller restores their working relationship, but it does not erase the secret behind the identity of the Snake Miller serves. The partnership can resume before Miller knows the full truth; once the truth reframes that alliance, his anger is understandable.
Konami’s official product description calls Miller Snake’s “former partner” and establishes the Afghanistan rescue setup. It does not state a definitive motive for Miller’s later rejection. The personal-betrayal explanation is an interpretation of the ending and their history, rather than an official account of the final conversation.

Because Miller believes Big Boss betrayed him first. He discovers that the partner he supported kept him out of a deception built around Big Boss’s identity, leaving him to help create and defend the phantom’s force. Their break is most plausibly read as a response to that personal betrayal, intensified by the history they had built together in MSF—not as proof that Miller stopped caring about their shared cause.
