CurseForge is not a single crash cause: Minecraft may fail because of an incompatible mod or loader, a Java runtime issue, a damaged installation, a path or permissions problem, graphics drivers, or memory pressure. Start by recording the exact error and checking the log. Then find out whether every profile fails or just one—that distinction points to the right fix.
First, identify where the failure happens
Separate an error in the CurseForge app or installation from a crash after Minecraft begins loading. CurseForge’s installation and launch guide and error-message guide cover app, path, Java, and launcher problems. A failure during game loading may instead involve Minecraft, its modloader, or a mod.
Before changing files, note the exact error text and exit code, when the crash occurs, the Minecraft and modloader versions, and whether the profile is a published pack or a custom one. Save the latest log and any crash report. CurseForge asks users to include logs when seeking help.
Check whether all profiles crash or only one
Every pack or a clean profile fails
Repair the installation, check graphics drivers through your hardware maker, and try a clean custom profile without mods. If that profile also crashes, an individual pack mod is less likely to be the cause. Testing vanilla Minecraft can further help distinguish a game or graphics problem from a modded-profile problem. CurseForge outlines these checks in its launcher and in-game troubleshooting guide.

Only one pack or custom profile fails
Repair or reinstall the affected pack. For a custom profile, review mods added or updated shortly before the problem began. Check that each mod supports the profile’s Minecraft version and loader; an incompatible mod or unsupported loader version can prevent launch. If an unmodified published pack still fails, contact its author with the error and logs.
Only one modloader fails
If the same game or pack works with one loader but not another, that comparison is useful evidence. Confirm that the selected loader type and version are supported by the Minecraft version and pack, then seek help from the relevant loader project if the problem persists.
Match the error to a likely fix
| What you see | What to check |
|---|---|
| Java is missing or out of date | Java is required to run Minecraft modpacks, but the correct runtime depends on the Minecraft and pack versions. Follow the pack’s requirements. CurseForge suggests repairing or reinstalling Java, checking whether antivirus software is blocking it, or setting the Java path manually. |
| “Failed to launch modpack” or another unexpected launch error | Try CurseForge’s Repair Installation option. Its launch guide also describes switching the launcher used to start the game as a troubleshooting step. |
| Invalid installation path or directory creation failure | Check folder permissions and choose a supported installation location. CurseForge flags paths such as OneDrive or Desktop, the vanilla .minecraft folder, paths with special characters, and a drive root as potential problems. |
| Loader installation or compatibility error | Repair the installation, then verify that the loader type and version match the selected Minecraft version and the pack’s requirements. |
| Graphics glitches or a graphics-related crash | Update drivers from the GPU manufacturer and check whether vanilla Minecraft also fails. |
| Log or system monitoring points to memory pressure | Check available physical memory and the log before changing allocation. Memory changes will not fix an incompatible mod, loader, or damaged installation. |
Change memory only when the evidence points there
Minecraft Help explains that Java Edition memory allocation can be changed through JVM arguments in the Minecraft Launcher: Fix Minecraft: Java Edition Game Crashes by Checking Memory Allocation. Treat this as a targeted check, not a universal fix. The appropriate allocation depends on the computer’s physical memory and the pack’s needs, so avoid applying a large fixed value without those details.
If logs or system monitoring confirm that the computer lacks physical memory, a RAM upgrade might help, but the right type and capacity depend on the computer and its existing configuration.

Escalate with enough detail to diagnose the crash
If the failure continues, send the relevant logs and full error to the support team that matches where it occurs: CurseForge for an app or installation problem, the modloader project for a loader-specific failure, or the pack author for a pack-specific crash. Include the Minecraft, loader, Java, and pack versions, and say whether a clean profile or another loader reproduces the issue.
