A 1080p label in the YouTube player does not, by itself, prove that your encoder sent only 1080p. Check the encoder’s outgoing resolution and frame rate, then distinguish YouTube’s incoming signal from the quality a viewer can select. YouTube detects incoming settings automatically by default and transcodes live input into multiple playback formats. YouTube’s encoder guidance explains those separate stages.
First, find out where 1080p appears
There are two different questions: what resolution reached YouTube, and what resolution a viewer is seeing. Check the encoder’s active output and Live Control Room’s input information during the stream. If either reports 1920×1080, YouTube is receiving 1080p—even if the game, capture source, or project is 4K. If the control room confirms 4K input but a viewer’s player tops out at 1080p, the issue is on the playback side or remains specific to that viewing situation.
YouTube creates multiple output formats from a live input. A viewer’s device, connection, and player quality selection can affect playback, but YouTube’s documentation does not establish one universal reason why a particular viewer would see 1080p as the highest option. Do not infer the incoming resolution from the player label alone.
Check the encoder’s actual output
Verify resolution and frame rate while live
Open the active output settings in your streaming software or hardware encoder. Confirm that the outgoing signal is 3840×2160 at 60 fps. A 4K game or camera source is not enough if the encoder canvas, scaling/output resolution, or active profile is set to 1920×1080. If the encoder reports 1080p, correct its output settings and verify the live output again.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Check the stream key’s resolution setting
YouTube recommends automatic detection by default. If you need manual selection, create a custom stream key in Live Control Room and turn on manual settings under Stream Resolution. The key’s setting controls detection/configuration; it does not make an encoder send 4K. The encoder must still output 4K60. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance and its stream-key guidance.
Match codec and bitrate to YouTube’s 4K60 guidance
YouTube’s current encoder guidance, accessed in 2026, gives these figures for the stated resolution and frame rate. Its recommendations depend on codec, resolution, and frame rate.

| Live video format | Codec | YouTube bitrate guidance |
|---|---|---|
| 2160p (4K) at 60 fps | H.264 | 35 Mbps recommended |
| 2160p (4K) at 60 fps | AV1 or H.265 (HEVC) | 10–40 Mbps range |
| 1080p at 60 fps | H.264 | 12 Mbps recommended |
| 1080p at 60 fps | AV1 or H.265 (HEVC) | 4–10 Mbps range |
These are guidance figures, not a guarantee that a stream will be accepted or displayed at a particular quality. Confirm that the encoder’s selected codec and bitrate are appropriate for the output you intend to send. YouTube lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS; it specifies CBR bitrate encoding and a recommended keyframe interval of 2 seconds, not over 4 seconds. For 2160p, the low-latency improvement option is unavailable; YouTube uses normal latency. Details are in YouTube’s live encoder settings.
Test the upload path and stream health
A connection problem may affect delivery, but it cannot explain an encoder that is explicitly configured to send only 1080p. First confirm the output resolution; then investigate the connection if Live Control Room reports bitrate or connection trouble.

- Test sustained upload capacity. YouTube recommends running a speed test and choosing a stream quality that the connection can support reliably. Compare the available, sustained upload capacity with the encoder’s target bitrate rather than relying on a brief peak.
- Use representative content in a test stream. Include the movement and audio you expect during the real broadcast. YouTube recommends testing with representative content because a static scene may not reveal problems that appear during gameplay.
- Monitor stream health messages. Check Live Control Room while the stream is active. If it reports connection or bitrate trouble, address that signal and test again; do not treat the viewer’s 1080p label alone as proof of an upload failure. See YouTube’s setup and stream-health guidance and its live streaming troubleshooting guidance.
Use the symptom to choose the next check
- Encoder output or Live Control Room input is 1080p: inspect the encoder’s output resolution, scaling, active profile, frame rate, and selected stream key. The source being 4K does not establish that the outgoing signal is 4K.
- Control Room confirms 4K input, but one viewer sees only 1080p: check the player’s quality menu and the viewer’s device and network conditions. YouTube documents multi-format transcoding, but the available evidence does not identify a single universal cause for this specific playback symptom.
- Stream health shows connection or bitrate trouble: compare actual delivery with the bitrate guidance for the chosen codec and resolution, test the upload path, and run another representative test.
Without the encoder’s active output settings and the stream-health information, the cause in an individual setup cannot be determined from the symptom alone.
