Start by finding out whether the stream stops for the church operator, for viewers, or both. The cause may be the church’s upload connection, encoder, or audio/video feed; if only one viewer has trouble, the problem may be on that viewer’s device or connection. Check those possibilities before changing settings or resetting a stream key.
First, work out who is affected
Ask the operator whether the encoder and YouTube Live Control Room still show the stream, then check whether other viewers can watch it. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance uses viewer error patterns as diagnostic clues:
- One viewer reports an error: Ask what they did to encounter it and whether they can reproduce it. Check their device and connection, and confirm whether the operator and other viewers can watch.
- Several viewers on the same connection have errors: Investigate that shared network.
- Viewers on different networks report trouble: Check the encoder and stream health at the church.
- The operator also sees the stream stop or degrade: Focus first on the encoder, its sources, and the church’s outbound connection.
These patterns help narrow the search; they do not prove a cause on their own.
Check the encoder, video and audio sources
- Update the encoder software. Check the software’s own update mechanism, then restart it if needed before testing.
- Inspect its preview and error messages. If the preview is already broken or unstable, check the camera feed, audio routing, capture devices, and encoder load before blaming YouTube.
- Check CPU load. High load can point to an encoder struggling to process the chosen settings. Reduce the workload or test a lower resolution and bitrate during rehearsal.
- Review a local recording. If the archive has the same missing audio, frozen picture, or other defect, the issue is likely present in the church’s source or encoding path. If the preview and recording look healthy but YouTube playback is disrupted, investigate the outbound connection next.
YouTube’s troubleshooting page recommends checking the encoder, its errors and CPU load, and a local recording. If connection testing indicates a problem, contact the internet service provider; if the problem persists, report it to YouTube. For software that signs in to YouTube directly rather than using a stream key, YouTube directs users to that software’s support team.

Measure upload capacity and leave room
A church sends its live video outward, so upload capacity matters more than a plan’s advertised download speed. Run an upload speed test on the same network and, as far as practical, under the conditions in which the encoder will stream. A result from another room, another network, or a quiet time may not reflect capacity during a service.
YouTube says the total outgoing stream bitrate must not exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom. Count the primary and backup streams if both are being sent. Other people and devices using the same connection can reduce the bandwidth available to the encoder. These are general recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular connection will stay stable.

If the encoder is on Wi-Fi, testing a wired connection is a reasonable way to investigate whether the wireless link is contributing to instability. A Cat6 Ethernet cable is one possible practical option, but YouTube does not prescribe that cable type or establish that it will fix a specific church’s stream.
Set bitrate and keyframes for the connection
Choose settings that fit both the desired picture and the measured upload capacity. YouTube’s current encoder guidance varies by resolution, frame rate, and codec. For H.264, its published recommendations include:

| H.264 stream setting | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
These are YouTube encoder-setting recommendations, not a diagnosis or a promise that a connection will support the stream reliably. Use YouTube’s table for other resolution and frame-rate combinations rather than extrapolating from these examples. If upload capacity is tight, test a lower resolution or bitrate during rehearsal and monitor the result.
- Use constant bitrate (CBR) encoding.
- Set a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says it should not exceed four seconds.
- YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of the RTMP video-streaming protocol.
Changing several settings at once makes it harder to identify the cause. Adjust one relevant setting at a time and compare the encoder preview, local recording, and YouTube playback.

Reset a stream key only for a start or key error
If a third-party encoder reports an error when starting, YouTube’s troubleshooting steps include creating a new stream key and updating the encoder to use it. This is a targeted fix for a start/key problem, not a general remedy for a stream that drops mid-service.
To check stream setup, open the stream’s settings in YouTube Live Control Room and confirm that the encoder is using the correct stream key and stream URL. YouTube’s live-stream settings guidance also covers stream keys, latency, and auto-start/auto-stop settings. Avoid changing these options without a reason tied to the symptom.

Rehearse the start, archive and backup
YouTube’s live-streaming tips recommend setting up the encoder at least two hours before an event and starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start. Use a rehearsal to check the full chain:
- Start the encoder and confirm that Live Control Room shows a preview.
- Check that the stream can be opened from the channel or watch page and on a mobile device.
- Confirm that the local archive is growing while the stream runs.
- Monitor stream quality rather than assuming that a successful start means the connection will remain healthy.
- If the church has a backup encoder configured, test failover: during rehearsal, stop the primary encoder or unplug its Ethernet cable and confirm that the player rolls over to the backup.
Do not test failover during a service with an unsuspecting audience. A rehearsal reveals whether the backup path actually works before it is needed.
Troubleshoot by symptom
| What you see | What to check next |
|---|---|
| Only one viewer cannot watch | Ask the viewer to describe and reproduce the error; compare with the operator and other viewers, then check that viewer’s device and connection. |
| Viewers sharing one network have trouble | Investigate that network and whether multiple users or devices are competing for capacity. |
| Viewers on unrelated networks report errors | Inspect encoder health, its error messages, CPU load, and stream status. |
| Encoder preview or local recording is faulty | Check the camera and audio feeds, routing, capture devices, and encoder workload. |
| Preview and local recording look healthy, but YouTube playback is disrupted | Test the church’s outbound connection and compare available upload capacity with total stream bitrate, including a backup stream where applicable. |
| Third-party encoder cannot start and reports a key error | Create a new stream key and update the encoder; do not treat this as a fix for every mid-stream interruption. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If the church’s goal is to keep a pre-recorded YouTube stream running around the clock, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add the YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at the church, and StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud. It is for uploaded videos, not camera-based services.
- Stream the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60 fps, at one flat price per slot rather than quality-based tiers.
- Automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card; the service also offers day, week, month, six-month, and yearly billing, with cancellation any time.
- Monthly: $9.99 per month.
