A black EC2-to-YouTube stream can come from the captured source, the encoder, YouTube ingest, or viewer playback. First find the earliest place the picture disappears: compare the EC2 desktop or source, your encoder preview, YouTube Live Control Room, and the published stream. The right fix depends on that location; the title alone does not identify your encoder, operating system, EC2 instance type, or capture source.
Find where the picture first goes black
Check each stage separately rather than changing drivers or capture settings at random. YouTube recommends checking the encoder output and the Live Control Room preview, then monitoring stream audio and video quality. YouTube’s streaming troubleshooting guide explains how to use those checks.
- EC2 desktop or source: Is the intended game, display, window, browser, or media playing visibly on the instance?
- Encoder preview: Does the scene show the picture that you intend to send?
- YouTube Live Control Room: Is the incoming preview black, degraded, or healthy?
- Published playback: Does the stream remain black for viewers even though the Control Room preview looks right?
Note whether audio continues and whether a local recording or archive contains video. These comparisons help distinguish a missing capture source from an encoder or downstream problem; they do not, by themselves, prove a specific cause.
If the EC2 source or encoder preview is black
Check the selected source and scene
Make sure the intended display, game, window, browser, or media source is enabled and selected in the encoder scene. If you use OBS, its blank Game Capture troubleshooting guidance applies specifically to Game Capture; it may not fit a display or window capture problem.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For OBS display capture, graphics-adapter behavior and available capture methods depend on operating system and software version. OBS documents adapter-related issues and capture-method options in its multiple-adapter guidance. Do not apply Windows laptop-specific directions to an EC2 system unless that is actually your operating system and configuration.
Verify the instance and driver match
If the instance uses a GPU, check its exact EC2 instance type and operating system, then follow AWS’s relevant NVIDIA driver installation guidance. AWS notes that GPU-backed instances require appropriate drivers; the suitable driver category depends on the instance family and workload. Its accelerated computing instance documentation describes supported GPU workloads, including graphics use cases. A driver change is not a guaranteed fix for a black preview.

If the encoder output is black, degraded, or choppy
YouTube recommends checking the audio and video sources routed into the encoder, looking for encoder errors on the live dashboard, checking CPU load, and updating the encoder software. Compare the encoder preview with a local recording if available: if both are black, investigate the source or scene; if the recording is good but the live output is not, look more closely at encoder output and the connection to YouTube. These are diagnostic clues, not proof of a single cause. See YouTube’s troubleshooting steps.
In OBS, scene composition and rendering also use GPU resources. If OBS reports encoding overload or the output is choppy, simplify scenes, remove unnecessary sources or effects, close other GPU-heavy programs, and consider reducing source resolution. OBS’s encoding-performance troubleshooting and performance guidance address overload and rendering performance; those symptoms do not establish GPU overload as the cause of every black screen.

If the encoder preview is healthy but YouTube is black
Check stream health in Live Control Room and inspect the outbound connection from the EC2 environment. YouTube says that a healthy-looking encoder with a problematic stream can point to an outbound internet connectivity issue. Avoid changing a working capture source before checking the ingest path. If the stream will not start at all, verify that the encoder is using the current YouTube stream key and matching configuration; YouTube’s live-stream start-error guidance recommends replacing a stale or invalid key when appropriate.
YouTube recommends testing settings before an event, monitoring stream health, and using RTMPS where supported. Its encoder troubleshooting guidance covers stream checks, while its live streaming overview explains that incoming live streams are transcoded for viewer playback. If the local preview is healthy but public playback is black, verify the Control Room’s ingest status and test playback in another browser or device before altering the EC2 capture setup.

If only viewer playback is black
When both the encoder preview and Live Control Room preview show video, the source and incoming stream are less likely to be where the picture disappears. Check playback on another device or browser and distinguish a viewer-side playback issue from the stream seen in the Control Room. This is a practical diagnostic inference from YouTube’s preview and stream-health guidance, not a confirmed explanation for any particular EC2 setup.

| What you see | Where to investigate first |
|---|---|
| EC2 desktop or intended source is black | Confirm the source is actually rendering; then check instance GPU and driver suitability. |
| Source is visible, but encoder preview is black | Check the selected scene/source and capture method; use encoder-specific troubleshooting for that source type. |
| Encoder preview is black or degraded and the local recording matches | Check routed sources, scene configuration, encoder errors, and system load. |
| Encoder preview is good, but YouTube preview is not | Check Live Control Room stream health and the outbound network path; verify key/configuration if the stream will not start. |
| Encoder and Control Room previews are good, but playback is black | Test playback on another device or browser and check ingest status separately. |
| OBS reports overload or output is choppy | Reduce scene complexity and competing GPU work, then reassess performance. |
