Sound should come from the TV or connected audio system. Check the TV’s mute and volume, set the Switch’s TV Sound option to Automatic or Stereo, and connect the dock directly to the TV while troubleshooting.
First, confirm where the sound is failing
Undock the console and play a game or other audio through its built-in speakers. On the original Nintendo Switch and Switch OLED, the speakers automatically turn off when docked; that is expected behavior, not a fault. If handheld sound works but docked TV sound does not, concentrate on the TV and the dock-to-TV connection. If handheld sound is also missing, follow Nintendo’s system-speaker troubleshooting.
Nintendo Switch Lite does not support TV mode, so it cannot send gameplay audio to a television through a dock.
Check the TV and the Switch audio setting
- Make sure the TV is not muted and raise its volume. If you use a sound bar or receiver, check that device’s mute, volume, and selected input too.
- On the original Switch or Switch OLED, open System Settings > TV Settings > TV Sound. Try Automatic or Stereo. The original Switch also offers Surround Sound and Mono; a surround setting may not work as intended if the TV or connected equipment does not support that audio configuration. See Nintendo’s instructions for adjusting original Switch TV settings.
Switch 2 has different audio menus and accessories. Do not use its setting names or hardware requirements as instructions for the original Switch.

Make the HDMI connection as simple as possible
- Turn off the TV and reseat the HDMI cable at both the dock and the TV.
- Connect the dock directly to the TV, temporarily bypassing any sound bar, receiver, HDMI switch, or video adapter.
- Turn the TV back on and select the HDMI input the dock is connected to.
Nintendo recommends removing intervening accessories while troubleshooting TV output on the original Switch. Its TV connection troubleshooting covers a no-image problem, so its cable, port, TV, and dock cross-tests are useful ways to isolate the setup, not a guarantee that a particular part caused an audio-only failure.
Test the cable, HDMI port, and TV
- Inspect the HDMI cable for visible damage. If you have another compatible cable, try it.
- Connect the dock to a different HDMI port on the TV, then select that input.
- If possible, test the Switch and dock on another TV.
Changing one item at a time makes the result easier to interpret: if sound returns after changing the cable, port, or TV, you have narrowed the problem to that part of the setup. Nintendo’s Switch TV-output guidance recommends similar cross-tests when the TV displays no image.

Use another dock to check for a dock fault
If you can borrow a compatible dock for your console generation, test the console with it and the same TV setup. If a different dock restores both picture and sound, Nintendo’s TV-output guidance indicates the original dock needs service. If sound is still missing with another dock—or you cannot cross-test—contact Nintendo Support about service for the console and dock.
For a Switch 2 specifically, Nintendo has a separate docked-audio troubleshooting procedure. It says that if audio and video work with another Switch 2 dock, the original dock needs service; if the issue persists with another dock or no alternate dock is available, service for the console, dock, and original HDMI cable is the next step.

Switch 2 instructions are not interchangeable with original Switch instructions
The original Switch and Switch OLED use TV Sound choices of Automatic, Surround Sound, Stereo, and Mono. Switch 2 instead offers Automatic, Stereo, and Linear PCM 5.1 Surround in its Audio menu; see Nintendo’s Switch 2 audio settings.
Nintendo also says the original Switch AC adapter (HAC-002) does not provide enough power for a Switch 2 dock to support TV mode. Its Switch 2 guidance addresses compatible HDMI cables, and Nintendo’s UK article specifies Ultra High Speed or HDMI 2.1 if you are not using the supplied cable. Those Switch 2 power and cable details should not be applied to original Switch owners.
