On a compatible TV, Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM) can trigger a low-latency picture preset—often called Game Mode—to reduce input lag. This is expected behavior, not usually a fault.
How the PS5 triggers Game Mode
ALLM lets the PS5 tell a compatible TV when gameplay is underway. The TV can then select its low-latency mode automatically. Sony describes this as a way to reduce lag during play, and notes that the TV may label the setting “Game Mode.” Sony’s PS5 resolution support guide explains how the console setting works; Sony’s PS5 features page describes the gameplay signal.
The exact TV menu name and available controls vary by model. HDMI 2.1 branding alone does not guarantee ALLM support, so check the manual for your particular TV or ask its manufacturer.
How to stop automatic Game Mode switching
- On the PS5, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > ALLM. Sony says the latest PS5 system software is required for this setting.
- Set ALLM to Off if you do not want the console to request a low-latency mode.
- If the TV still switches to low-latency mode, check the PS5’s VRR setting. Sony says low-latency mode can still activate when VRR output is in use, even if ALLM is Off. To disable ALLM behavior completely, Sony says to turn VRR off as well.
Depending on the TV, its own settings may also offer a way to control automatic switching. Consult the manual for the exact model; there is no single TV menu path that applies to every set.

Why games and media apps can behave differently
Sony says the PS5 does not send an ALLM signal while a media app is running. That is why the TV may use Game Mode in a game but return to another picture mode when you open a streaming or other media app.
When to check the HDMI cable or port
A cable or port check is relevant if you are investigating a signal or compatibility problem, not simply because you prefer a different picture mode. Sony recommends using the HDMI cable supplied with the PS5, or an Ultra High Speed HDMI Cable for ALLM, and connecting the console to a compatible HDMI 2.1 port where available. Its cable and port advice also appears in 4K/120 Hz troubleshooting, so those checks are not a guaranteed fix for every ALLM issue. If the supplied cable works and the TV supports ALLM, buying another cable is not the normal way to change this preference.

Whether to leave Game Mode on
Automatic Game Mode is useful if you want the TV to select a low-latency mode during gameplay. You may prefer to turn it off if you would rather use another picture mode or processing setting. The sources do not establish a universal picture-quality trade-off: the result depends on the TV’s own modes and settings.
