They do not necessarily indicate a fault. Keeping the bars can preserve the whole image; removing them may crop or distort it.
What aspect ratio means
Aspect ratio is a picture’s width compared with its height. A 16:9 frame is wider than a 4:3 frame. YouTube’s standard aspect ratio for playback on computers is 16:9, and its player can adapt to videos with other ratios. YouTube recommends not adding padding or black bars directly to an uploaded video.
When a video is scaled to fit a differently shaped screen without changing its proportions, unused space may remain. Bars above and below the picture are commonly called letterboxing; bars on the left and right are commonly called pillarboxing. Some technical sources use “letterbox” more broadly for scaling an image to fit a display area.
For some legacy or broadcast formats, pixel shape also matters. Pixel aspect ratio describes the shape of individual pixels, while display aspect ratio describes the shape of the displayed image. Microsoft gives the relationship as: display aspect ratio = (image width in pixels ÷ image height in pixels) × pixel aspect ratio. For most everyday troubleshooting, start by comparing the video frame with the screen.

Find out where the bars come from
- Note their position. Bars at the top and bottom often indicate that the video is wider than the display; bars at the sides often indicate a narrower video on a wider display. Bars on all four sides can also result from sizing or framing choices.
- Check the original video file. Play it in another player or inspect it in an editor. If the bars remain in the source, they may be embedded in the picture itself.
- Compare the source with the page or player. If bars appear only on a hosting page, in an embed, or in one player, the surrounding layout or player sizing may be responsible. Vimeo notes that its clip-page design can create apparent side space, and that it does not automatically remove bars hard-coded into a video.
- For a TV, check the content and connected device. Aspect-ratio behavior can depend on the program, TV, set-top box, or other connected device. If the problem occurs only on one input, check that device’s output settings before assuming the TV is faulty. Menu names and available picture modes vary by TV model.
Choose whether to keep, crop, or stretch the picture
There is no way to make every mismatched frame fill every screen while also preserving all of the original image and its proportions. Choose the trade-off that suits the video:
| Option | What happens | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Fit or scale proportionally | The whole original image remains visible. | Bars or unused space may remain. |
| Crop, zoom, or pan-and-scan | The picture fills more of the display. | Some of the frame may be cut off. |
| Stretch | The picture fills the display area. | People and objects can look unnaturally wide or tall. |
Fix the issue that matches what you see
A film has bars above and below
The film may have a wider frame than a 16:9 TV. Those bars can be intentional and preserve the movie’s full composition. Leave the picture at its original proportions if you want to see the whole frame. A TV’s Zoom or Wide mode may reduce the bars, but it can cut off picture content or distort the image.

Older 4:3 footage has bars at the sides
The side bars preserve the narrower original picture on a widescreen display. Cropping removes parts of the image; stretching changes its proportions. If neither trade-off is acceptable, keep the bars.
The bars are baked into a video you are editing
Use video editing software to crop or reformat the video, or change the project aspect ratio. A fill or crop setting enlarges the picture to occupy more of the frame, potentially cutting off edges; a fit setting preserves the full picture but may leave empty space. After changing the project ratio, review every clip, since framing that worked in one ratio may not work in another.

The bars appear only on a website or in an embed
Compare the original file with the page and, if possible, an embed or another player. If the source has no bars, changing or re-exporting the video may not help: the surrounding page or player could be creating the apparent space. If the bars are in the source, the player will not necessarily remove them.
The picture is cut off or distorted on a TV
Check the TV’s picture-size or aspect-ratio mode and the output settings of the device connected to the affected input. Zooming can hide bars by enlarging the image, but it may cut off the edges. Stretching fills the screen at the cost of correct proportions. Available controls and labels differ by model.

If you publish videos, frame them for the destination
Set the editing project to the intended frame shape, then check how the video looks in the target player before exporting. YouTube’s computer player uses 16:9 as its standard ratio and adapts to other video ratios, so avoid adding black padding just to force a 16:9 frame. If the video is meant to be 4:3 or a wider film ratio, preserve that composition rather than adding bars as part of the picture.

Common causes and fixes
| What you notice | Likely explanation | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Top and bottom bars on a movie | The source may be wider than the screen. | Keep the full frame, or use zoom only if losing some image is acceptable. |
| Side bars on 4:3 footage | The source is narrower than the widescreen display. | Keep the original proportions, or choose cropping or stretching knowingly. |
| Bars remain in the original file | They may be embedded in the video. | Crop or reformat in an editor, then inspect the framing. |
| Bars appear only on a page or in an embed | The page layout or player may be adding space. | Compare the source with another player or an embed before editing the file. |
| Only one TV input shows the problem | The connected device may be outputting a mismatched frame or setting. | Check that device’s output settings and the TV’s picture mode for that input. |
