Why Does OBS Show 4K 60fps but YouTube Live Only Show 1080p?

An OBS 4K60 canvas is not proof YouTube receives 4K. Check the encoded output, Live Control Room ingest details, stream-key settings, and viewer playback separately.

An OBS display of 3840×2160 at 60 fps does not prove that YouTube is receiving a 4K60 stream. OBS may show the canvas or preview while its streaming output is scaled down, or YouTube may be showing a transcoded playback option rather than the incoming resolution. Check OBS’s active output and YouTube’s received-stream details before changing hardware.

What the OBS and YouTube numbers mean

OBS can show a 4K canvas or preview while sending a lower-resolution stream. The key value is the resolution and frame rate of the encoded output from the active streaming encoder—not simply the canvas size or what appears in the preview.

YouTube detects the encoder’s incoming resolution and frame rate by default, then transcodes live video into multiple viewer formats. As a result, seeing or selecting 1080p during playback does not, by itself, show that YouTube received only 1080p. Compare the incoming-stream information in YouTube Live Control Room with the quality options available on the viewer side. YouTube’s live encoder settings · OBS Project’s explanation of transcoding.

Diagnose the stream in order

  1. Check OBS’s output scaling

In OBS, open Settings → Video. Check the base (canvas) resolution, output (scaled) resolution, and configured FPS. A 3840×2160 canvas can still be scaled to 1920×1080 for streaming. Next, inspect the active streaming encoder and its output configuration. Menu labels can vary by OBS version; verify the settings for the output actually being sent, not just the preview.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
    • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
    • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
    • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
    • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
    • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  2. Verify what YouTube receives

Open the stream in YouTube Live Control Room and inspect the received resolution, frame rate, and stream health. YouTube generally detects the encoder settings automatically. If you use a custom stream key with manual stream-resolution settings, confirm the selected mode is not limiting the intended input. YouTube documents its stream-key and encoder settings here.

  3. Match codec, frame rate, and bitrate

For its documented RTMP/RTMPS setup, YouTube supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1. It recommends CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval, with no more than 4 seconds; the documented frame-rate range goes up to 60 fps. Make sure the selected OBS encoder is actually sending the codec and target resolution you intend.

For 2160p at 60 fps, YouTube’s live-ingestion recommendations list H.264 at 35 Mbps and AV1/H.265 in a 10–40 Mbps range. Use the recommendation for the codec you are sending; these figures are for live ingestion, not uploaded videos. See YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate table.

  4. Check upload stability and stream health

Test with representative gameplay motion and audio, monitor YouTube’s stream-health information, and make sure your available outbound upload capacity has headroom above the stream’s bitrate. An unstable connection can interrupt or degrade delivery, but changing to Ethernet will not correct an OBS output-resolution setting. YouTube’s streaming tips cover connection and test considerations.

  5. Separate incoming quality from playback quality

After confirming the incoming stream, check which playback qualities YouTube offers. YouTube transcodes a live input into different output formats for viewers with different devices and network conditions. A viewer’s 1080p selection is therefore not enough to diagnose the encoder’s incoming resolution. OBS Project also describes transcoding as producing different resolution, frame-rate, and bitrate feeds: Transcodes / Transcoding.

Should you keep 4K60 or use a lower output?

Choose based on the actual need and what your encoder and connection can sustain. Compare the resolution and frame rate, the codec-specific bitrate recommendation, stable upload capacity with headroom, encoder capability, and latency needs. YouTube notes that 4K/2160 streams use normal latency and do not offer the low-latency improvement option. Check YouTube’s current latency and encoder guidance.

If the audience, game, or connection does not benefit from 4K60, a lower output may be the more reliable choice. Do not buy a capture card or network hardware solely because YouTube playback shows 1080p: a capture card is relevant when an external HDMI source is involved, and network equipment is relevant when testing shows an upload reliability problem.

Common causes and fixes

  • Canvas is 4K, output is 1080p: In OBS Settings → Video, inspect output (scaled) resolution and confirm the active streaming output uses the intended value.
  • YouTube reports a lower incoming resolution than expected: Check the active encoder’s output, then inspect custom stream-key resolution settings for a manual limit.
  • 4K60 output is unstable: Verify the codec’s bitrate recommendation, test outbound capacity with headroom, and monitor stream health. Reduce the output if the connection or encoder cannot sustain it reliably.
  • Only 1080p appears in playback: Check YouTube’s incoming-stream details separately; playback options alone do not establish the ingest resolution.
  • Considering new equipment: First identify whether the bottleneck is an external source/capture path, encoding capability, or upload reliability. The 1080p symptom alone does not identify a hardware fault.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep prerecorded video playing as a YouTube live stream rather than stream gameplay live from OBS, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; uploads stream as made up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, and the service automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
