Steam can show a friend as Offline even while they are using Steam or playing a game. The most likely explanation is that they selected Invisible, which keeps them connected to Steam’s social features while making them appear offline. Other possibilities include Steam’s actual Offline Mode, a stale friends list, or a lost connection to the Steam Friends network.
Seeing someone online in Discord, inside a game, on mobile, or through another launcher does not necessarily mean Steam’s desktop friends service is currently reporting them as online. Start by checking the friend’s status, then troubleshoot your own Steam connection only if the problem continues.
The most likely reason: your friend is Invisible
Steam’s Invisible status is designed to make a user appear offline to friends while allowing them to remain connected to Steam. According to Steam’s chat update, an Invisible user can still view the friends list and use chat.
That means your friend may be able to browse their library, chat with other people, launch a game, or otherwise use Steam while your friends list continues to display them as Offline. This is an intentional privacy setting, not proof that Steam has failed.

Your friend must change their own status if they want to appear Online. On the current desktop client, they can generally:
- Open Friends & Chat.
- Select their avatar or current presence indicator.
- Choose Online instead of Invisible or Offline.
Steam’s layout and labels can vary between Windows, macOS, Linux, mobile, browser, and Big Picture interfaces. If the friend already appears to be Online on their side, switching to another status and then back to Online may refresh the presence connection. This is a practical client-side reset, not a guaranteed official fix.
You cannot normally force another user’s Invisible status to become visible. Opening their profile, checking achievements, or looking for game activity is not a reliable way to override that choice.
Invisible is not the same as Offline Mode
These two settings are often confused, but they describe different situations.

Steam’s Offline Mode support documentation explains that features requiring a Steam Network connection are unavailable while Steam is offline. Offline Mode therefore does not mean the person is not using Steam; it means Steam is not currently connected to its online services.
By contrast, Invisible is specifically a presence choice. Someone who is Invisible can remain connected to Steam Chat, while someone in Offline Mode generally cannot use normal online-dependent Steam features.

How to fix a wrong or stale Steam status
Use the following sequence from least invasive to more involved. The key diagnostic question is whether the problem affects one friend or nearly everyone.
1. Ask the friend to check their status
Have the friend open Friends & Chat and confirm that their presence is set to Online. If they are Invisible, there is nothing to repair on your computer: they have chosen to appear offline.

If they are already Online but you still see Offline, ask them to switch to another status and then back to Online. They should also check whether Steam reports that it has lost connection to the Steam Friends network.
2. Reopen Friends & Chat
Close the Friends & Chat window and open it again. This can cause the client to request current presence data instead of continuing to display an older state.
Do not assume that a working Steam Store page proves that the friends connection is healthy. Steam’s store, library, downloads, chat, and presence services can behave differently when one connection is degraded.
3. Fully exit and restart Steam
If Steam displays a lost-connection warning in the friends list, exit and restart the client. Steam’s support guidance recommends restarting Steam when the Friends network connection is lost.

Use a full exit rather than merely closing the visible window:
- Windows: choose Steam > Exit, then launch Steam again. If necessary, confirm that Steam is no longer running in the system tray or Task Manager.
- macOS: quit Steam from the application menu or Dock, then relaunch it.
- Linux: quit Steam through the client and verify that it has stopped before starting it again.
Sign in again if prompted and check whether the friend’s status updates.
4. Determine whether one friend or everyone is affected
- One friend only: Invisible status, that friend’s client connection, a delayed update, or a friend-specific synchronization issue is more likely.
- Several friends or everyone: Your Steam client, the Steam Friends network, a service outage, your network, firewall, ISP, or security software becomes more likely.
This distinction prevents unnecessary router changes or Steam reinstallation when the issue is simply another user’s privacy setting.
If every friend appears offline
When all or most friends show Offline, investigate the connection rather than assuming each person is Invisible.

A temporary Steam outage or regional service problem can interrupt presence updates. Check Steam’s service-status information and Steam Support’s connection troubleshooting. A sudden change in reported Steam activity can be a clue, but it is not definitive proof of an outage.
Steam lists maintenance, local-network configuration, ISP problems, firewall settings, and conflicting software among possible causes of connection trouble. See its Steam connection troubleshooting page.

Test your network
Restart your router if other Steam social features are also failing. For a clearer comparison, connect the computer to a different network, such as a phone hotspot. If friends appear correctly on the alternate network, your normal router, ISP, DNS path, or network filtering is more suspect.
If the problem is unchanged across multiple networks and devices, a Steam-side issue or account-specific problem becomes more plausible.
Review firewall and security software
Firewall rules, antivirus suites, VPNs, traffic filters, and other security tools can interfere with Steam communication. Check that Steam is permitted to communicate through your firewall and temporarily test whether an overlay, VPN, or filtering tool is involved.
Only disable security protection briefly for a controlled test, if necessary, and restore it immediately. Do not leave antivirus or firewall protection disabled, and do not download unofficial “Steam repair” utilities, DLL files, registry cleaners, or status-fixer programs.
Compare with Steam Chat in a browser
Steam Chat is available through the Steam client and a web browser, as described in Steam Support’s chat guidance. If browser chat works while the desktop client cannot update friends, the desktop client, its local network path, or an interfering program is more likely to be responsible.

Game activity and Steam presence are related but not identical. Steam’s ISteamFriends documentation distinguishes persona states from game and rich-presence information. A game window is therefore not absolute proof that the person is currently visible as Online through Steam.

Possible explanations include:
- The friend is Invisible.
- The friend is using Steam Offline Mode to play a compatible game.
- The game uses another launcher, account system, or platform.
- The game is running without publishing normal Steam Rich Presence.
- Steam’s presence update is delayed after login, game launch, logout, or a network change.
- The friend’s game-details privacy settings limit what other users can see.
- The activity belongs to another device or account session.
- The friend is active in Discord, on mobile, or on the web rather than in a normally connected Steam desktop session.
Discord presence and third-party tracker pages are not authoritative evidence of Steam’s current persona state. Similarly, a game-specific friend list may be able to show someone whom Steam’s own friends list currently reports as Offline—or the reverse.
Why restarting Steam can solve it
Steam presence is updated through networked services rather than being a permanent label stored only on your computer. If the client has retained old data, lost its Friends-network connection, or failed to process a presence update after a status or network change, a full restart can establish a fresh connection and reload the list.
Community discussions have described stale friend statuses, including cases associated with long-running client sessions or Invisible mode. These are user reports, not an official Valve confirmation of one specific bug, so treat them as evidence of a possible failure mode rather than a guaranteed diagnosis:

When to contact Steam Support
Contact Steam Support if the issue continues after a complete restart, sign-in, and testing on another network—especially when Steam Chat and friends presence remain unavailable. Include useful observations such as:
- Whether one friend or every friend is affected.
- Whether Steam shows a lost Friends-network connection.
- Whether browser Steam Chat works.
- Whether the issue occurs on another network or device.
- Whether other Steam services are also failing.
Do not jump straight to reinstalling Steam. Reinstallation is not a reliable first-line solution for Invisible status, Offline Mode, a Steam outage, or a network-level connection problem.
If you also see unexpected logins, unfamiliar devices, changed account details, or other security warnings, treat that as a separate account-security issue and use Steam’s official account support.
