YouTube usually rejects a live stream’s resolution when the video dimensions sent by your encoder do not match the resolution selected in Live Control Room’s Ingestion Settings. Check the exact stream-health message, compare the selected resolution with the encoder’s actual width and height, and make them match. YouTube’s reviewed guidance does not identify a special resolution rule for streams that run 24/7.
What “incorrect video size” means
YouTube expects the incoming video to have the height and width of the resolution selected in Ingestion Settings. If they differ, Live Control Room may report “Incorrect video size (resolution)” or an unsupported size. For example, selecting 1920 × 1080 while your encoder sends 1280 × 720 is a mismatch; set the encoder output or YouTube selection so both describe the same dimensions.
YouTube normally detects resolution and frame rate automatically. If you have chosen manual settings for a custom stream key, check the resolution configured for that key as well as the encoder output.
Fix the mismatch step by step
- Read the health message. Open YouTube Live Control Room and inspect the stream-health message and its timestamp. Confirm whether it says “Incorrect video size (resolution)” or identifies a different issue. Critical errors can prevent an event from starting or affect viewers; moderate errors may reduce quality. Unresolved errors continue to appear. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guide explains the health messages.
- Check YouTube’s selected ingestion resolution. In Live Control Room, open the stream’s Ingestion Settings and note the selected resolution. If you use a custom stream key with manual resolution, confirm that setting too. YouTube recommends automatic detection by default. See YouTube’s stream-health troubleshooting guidance.
- Check the encoder’s actual output. Find its output width and height—not just the source file’s resolution—and compare them with the selected setting. Change either side until the dimensions match.
- Check the rest of the stream configuration. If the health message names another issue, verify codec and format, audio, progressive scan, frame rate, keyframe interval, bitrate, and whether primary and backup feeds use matching settings.
- Preview and test before relying on the stream. Monitor stream health and confirm the player receives the expected picture and audio. If using encoder failover, YouTube recommends testing it by stopping the primary feed or disconnecting its Ethernet cable, then confirming the player switches to the backup.
Choose a resolution your encoder and connection can sustain
Matching dimensions addresses a resolution mismatch, but it does not guarantee a stable stream. Choose a resolution your encoder can actually output and your internet connection can sustain continuously. YouTube advises lowering the chosen resolution if bandwidth is insufficient. Bitrate recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate; these selected examples are from YouTube’s English encoder-settings page, accessed in 2026, and are recommendations rather than guarantees of performance:

| Video settings | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| H.264, 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| H.264, 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| H.264, 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265 (HEVC), 1080p at 30 fps | 4 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
Use the full current YouTube encoder-settings guidance for your chosen codec and frame rate rather than applying one bitrate to every mode. The page lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), AAC or MP3 audio, and a recommended keyframe interval of two seconds, not exceeding four seconds. Square pixels and progressive scan are recommended. Follow the page for the protocol and codec you use.
If the resolution error persists
Do not assume every rejection is caused by dimensions alone. Read the current health message and check the setting it identifies. Common configuration checks include:

- Bitrate: Confirm it suits the codec, resolution, and frame rate, and that your upload connection can sustain it.
- Video and audio format: Check that the codec, container or format, and audio codec are supported for your stream configuration.
- Scan and frame rate: Use progressive video and a supported frame rate.
- Keyframes: Use YouTube’s recommended two-second interval and do not exceed four seconds.
- Failover feeds: Keep primary and backup stream settings consistent.
YouTube’s guidance covers live encoder and ingestion troubleshooting generally; it does not establish a separate resolution restriction for 24/7 streams. Without the exact error, selected ingestion setting, encoder output dimensions, codec, frame rate, and bitrate, the cause of an individual rejection cannot be determined more specifically.
