In 2021, Epic Games said it had deliberately chosen not to put Fortnite on Microsoft’s Xbox Cloud Gaming service because it viewed Microsoft’s cloud-gaming effort as competitive with Epic’s PC business. That was a statement about Epic’s position at the time—not proof of Fortnite’s Xbox Cloud Gaming availability in 2026. The historical account comes from testimony reported during Epic’s lawsuit against Apple; a current catalog check is needed to establish today’s status.
What Epic said in the Apple case
On April 29, 2021, Thurrott reported on testimony by Joe Kreiner, an Epic vice president, in the Apple v. Epic Games antitrust proceedings. Asked whether Epic had deliberately decided not to offer Fortnite through Xbox Cloud Gaming, Kreiner’s answer described Microsoft’s cloud-gaming efforts as competitive with Epic’s PC offerings. The report’s account of the testimony is the basis for the headline claim.
Some of the deposition passage was redacted. The public account therefore supports the central point—that Epic made a deliberate decision and saw a competitive concern—but does not disclose every detail of its reasoning. It should not be recast as proof of a permanent policy or a complete explanation of Epic’s business strategy.
Why cloud access could be a platform issue for Epic
Fortnite is free to play, so the strategic question was not simply whether Microsoft might sell a copy of the game. Cloud gaming can put another company between a game and its players: the service may shape how people discover and access games, which account or subscription they use, and how they enter a wider platform ecosystem.

Epic’s PC business includes the Epic Games Store and the relationships around its accounts, distribution, and payments. One plausible interpretation of Kreiner’s testimony is that Epic worried Microsoft’s service could strengthen a competing route into PC gaming. That interpretation fits the stated competitive concern, but it is analysis rather than a fuller motive established by the partly redacted excerpt.
Why Epic treated GeForce Now differently
The 2021 report contrasted Xbox Cloud Gaming with Nvidia’s GeForce Now. Kreiner described GeForce Now as a way for players to access their game libraries across multiple storefronts. That model could be more compatible with Epic’s PC-storefront interests than a service Epic viewed as part of a competing platform ecosystem.

- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
The distinction is about the services’ relationships to game libraries and distribution, not a claim that Epic opposed cloud gaming altogether. The testimony shows that Epic treated the services differently; it does not establish every commercial term between Epic and Nvidia or prove GeForce Now posed no strategic risk. Nvidia’s current service details are at its official GeForce Now page.
Xbox console play is not Xbox Cloud Gaming
“Fortnite on Xbox” and “Fortnite through Xbox Cloud Gaming” refer to different ways to play. The 2021 decision concerned Microsoft’s streaming service, not ordinary local play on an Xbox console.

| Option | What it means |
|---|---|
| Xbox console | Fortnite runs locally on compatible Xbox hardware. |
| Xbox Cloud Gaming | Microsoft runs the game remotely and streams it to a supported device. |
| GeForce Now | A PC-oriented cloud-streaming service; check its current catalog and rules for Fortnite. |
| PC or mobile | Native play on a supported device rather than through a cloud stream. |
Availability through one route does not establish availability through another. Microsoft’s current cloud service information is at Xbox Cloud Gaming; the page’s live catalog and eligibility rules, rather than a 2021 report, are what matter for current access.
What the 2021 revenue figures do—and do not—show
The same report cited figures from Epic’s litigation testimony that attributed 47% of Fortnite revenue to PlayStation, 27.5% to Xbox, and 7% to iPhone, with Android, Nintendo Switch, and PC accounting for the remainder collectively. These are historical figures reported from testimony, not current revenue shares; the report does not establish the accounting period or definition needed to compare them confidently with present-day figures. They also concern platform revenue, not the value or importance of cloud distribution specifically.

What the decision meant for players
At the time, not offering Fortnite through Xbox Cloud Gaming meant one fewer streaming route for people without a suitable Xbox or gaming PC. It also made the difference between local Xbox play and Microsoft-hosted streaming especially easy to miss. The available account does not quantify any resulting loss of players or revenue, so stronger claims about measurable harm are not supported.
Cloud play can make a game accessible on lower-powered hardware, but it adds dependence on a service’s catalog, supported devices, and network connection. For a fast competitive game such as Fortnite, latency and connection stability can matter; a cloud stream may not suit every player or network.

How to check a cloud option before playing
- Check the live catalog. Search the provider’s current game list rather than relying on an old article or a general statement that a service supports Fortnite.
- Confirm your region and device. Catalogs, browser and mobile support, and available controls can vary by country and device category.
- Read the access terms. Verify whether Fortnite is included, whether a subscription is required, and whether the service streams a game linked to a storefront library. Do not assume an Xbox subscription grants access to every game playable on an Xbox console.
- Check controls and account linking. Confirm support for your preferred controller, keyboard, or touch input, and sign in with the Epic account that holds your progression and purchases.
- Try the connection before relying on it. A stable connection and acceptable latency matter more than peak speed alone; restrictive school networks, parental controls, VPNs, or DNS settings can also interfere with access.
For Epic account and gameplay help, use Epic Games Support. A game appearing in search results does not necessarily mean it is available in every region or on every device.
Other ways to play Fortnite
- GeForce Now: worth checking for players seeking a PC-oriented cloud option. Verify current Fortnite support, regional availability, controls, and any plan limits on Nvidia’s service page.
- Xbox console: a local-play option for people with compatible Xbox hardware; it is distinct from streaming through Xbox Cloud Gaming.
- PC or mobile: native play avoids the extra streaming step, provided the device supports Fortnite and can run it satisfactorily.
Cloud catalogs and service rules can change. The 2021 testimony establishes what Epic said then; it does not verify whether Fortnite appears in Xbox Cloud Gaming’s catalog today. Microsoft’s service page is xbox.com/en-US/play.
