Fortnite is available through Xbox Cloud Gaming now. The headline refers to Epic Games’ position in 2021, when Epic vice president of business development Joe Kreiner told the court that Microsoft’s xCloud efforts were “competitive with Epic Games’ own PC offerings.”
That was a business and platform-control concern—not a technical inability to stream Fortnite. Epic later changed course: Fortnite launched on browser-based Xbox Cloud Gaming on May 11, 2022, without requiring a paid Game Pass subscription.
What Epic said in 2021
The explanation emerged during the Epic Games v. Apple litigation. In a deposition made public before the trial, Joe Kreiner said Epic had not supported Microsoft’s xCloud because Epic viewed Microsoft’s efforts as competitive with its own PC offerings. Why cloud gaming could compete with Epic’s PC business
Cloud gaming is more than a remote computer running a game. The service can control the interface where players discover games, the account used to access them, the execution environment, and sometimes the billing relationship.
Epic’s PC strategy depends on maintaining a direct relationship with players through the Epic Games Store and its launcher. If Fortnite were accessed primarily through Microsoft’s Xbox ecosystem, Microsoft could become the player’s main gateway to the game—even though Epic still made and operated Fortnite.
That makes the issue a question of distribution and platform control. Epic could reasonably view a major platform’s cloud service as a potential competitor to its PC storefront, rather than as a neutral streaming utility.

Not according to the clearest public explanation. Epic’s wider dispute with Apple involved payment restrictions and platform fees, and contemporary coverage connected the xCloud decision to those broader platform concerns. But the court-backed explanation for not supporting xCloud was that Epic considered it competitive with its PC offerings.

It would therefore be misleading to reduce the decision to “Epic refused because Microsoft wanted 30 percent.” The public evidence does not conclusively establish that as the specific reason for the xCloud decision. The court also discussed the services platforms may provide beyond payment processing, including marketing, merchandising, and social-media promotion.

Why GeForce NOW was different
Epic supported Fortnite on NVIDIA GeForce NOW, even while it resisted xCloud. The difference is largely structural.

From Epic’s perspective, GeForce NOW could extend access to an existing PC game without replacing the PC-store relationship. Xbox Cloud Gaming looked more like a competing platform layer. That comparison is a strategic interpretation supported by the record, not a complete public statement from Epic listing every reason.

What changed in 2022?
On May 11, 2022, Epic and Microsoft announced that Fortnite was coming to Xbox Cloud Gaming. The launch used a browser-based experience and allowed Fortnite to be played for free without a paid Xbox Game Pass subscription. Supported access included mobile devices and Windows PCs, with touch controls or a compatible controller.
Neither company’s launch announcement provides a definitive public account of which specific commercial concern changed. Possible factors include the value of reaching mobile players, Microsoft’s decision to offer Fortnite as a free-to-play browser title, and an arrangement that made the distribution model acceptable to Epic. Those are plausible strategic factors, not confirmed explanations for the reversal.

How to play Fortnite through Xbox Cloud Gaming
- Open a supported browser on a compatible device.
- Go to xbox.com/play.
- Sign in with, or create, a free Microsoft account.
- Select Fortnite and follow the sign-in or account-linking prompts.
- Use touch controls where supported, or connect a compatible controller.
Epic’s current Fortnite page says a paid Game Pass subscription is not required for Fortnite through the browser experience. Availability can still vary by region, device, network conditions, and Microsoft’s service support. This free Fortnite path should not be confused with access to the entire Xbox cloud catalog, where subscription requirements may apply.
Because cloud gaming renders the game remotely, a strong, low-latency connection matters. If the picture is unstable or controls feel delayed, try stronger Wi-Fi or a wired connection, move closer to the router, and reduce other heavy network traffic.

Epic lists Xbox Cloud Gaming, GeForce NOW, and Amazon Luna among Fortnite’s cloud-streaming options. Fortnite content, controls, performance, and access conditions should not be assumed to be identical across services.
The answer in one sentence
Epic originally kept Fortnite off xCloud because it saw Microsoft’s cloud platform as competition for its PC distribution business; after that position changed, Fortnite arrived on Xbox Cloud Gaming in 2022 and remains listed there as of August 18, 2026.
