FPS Boost is available only for selected backward-compatible games on Xbox Series X|S. If its setting is missing, first check whether the exact game is on Xbox’s official Games Featuring FPS Boost list. If it is supported, look under Manage game > Compatibility options, enable FPS Boost if offered, restart the game, and check its status in the Xbox Guide.
Why the FPS Boost option may be missing
The most common explanation is that the game does not support FPS Boost. The feature applies to selected backward-compatible titles on Xbox Series X|S, not every Xbox game. Xbox has also said that compatibility options may be unavailable for games that do not support FPS Boost or Auto HDR.
Check the exact game on the official Games Featuring FPS Boost list. Do not assume support because another entry in the same franchise has it; check the specific title and edition you play. The list can change, so use its current entries rather than relying on an old compatibility list or announcement.
How to check and enable FPS Boost
- Confirm the game is eligible. Use the official Xbox list to check the exact title.
- Open its management screen. Find the game in your library or on the console, open its options, and choose Manage game.
- Inspect Compatibility options. If the title supports FPS Boost and the option is available, open Compatibility options and switch on FPS Boost.
- Restart the game. Close and relaunch it so the selected compatibility setting can take effect.
- Check the Guide. With the game running, press the Xbox button and look for the FPS Boost status indicator in the Guide overlay, under the clock.
Xbox’s March 2021 guidance says the compatibility options can be unavailable when a game does not support FPS Boost or Auto HDR. So an absent menu is not, by itself, evidence that the console is malfunctioning.

What to do if a listed game still has no option
Check whether the toggle is already on
For a supported title, inspect Compatibility options even if you do not remember changing a setting. If FPS Boost is offered but off, enable it, restart the game, and then check the Guide indicator.
Follow any title-specific instructions
Default behavior has varied by game. In its March 2021 announcement, Xbox said FPS Boost was not enabled by default on Xbox Series X for Fallout 4 and Fallout 76, and advised players to update and reboot the console. Those are historical examples, not a general rule for every supported game. Check current guidance for the title you are playing.

Update and reboot when appropriate
If the title’s current Xbox guidance calls for it, install available console updates and restart the console before checking the setting again. An update or reboot is not a way to add FPS Boost to a game that is not supported.
Recheck the exact listing and seek title-specific support
If the option remains absent, verify the game’s current listing and the exact edition installed. Then consult current Xbox support for that game or console. The available official guidance does not establish a further device-specific fix when a supported title’s option is still missing.

Does a missing option mean you need a new display or cable?
No display or cable purchase is established as a fix for a missing FPS Boost setting. The first checks are game eligibility and the console’s Compatibility options. FPS Boost changes how selected games run; Xbox has described using techniques that can raise frame rates, with resolution reduced in some cases to maintain smooth operation. It is not a universal setting that appears because a display supports a particular refresh rate.

Xbox described FPS Boost as using new methods to nearly double the original frame rate on selected titles and, in a few instances, quadruple it. Those are potential effects for supported games, not a promise that every title gets the same increase. The Guide indicator is the practical on-console check for whether FPS Boost is active in the running game.
