That establishes a paid progression advantage, but not that spending guarantees wins, is required to compete, or raises win rates by a measured amount.
What paying changes in Clash Royale
Supercell’s Pass Royale support page describes a free reward track and a premium track. Premium rewards can include a Hero, an Evolution or six Wild Evo Shards, as well as chests, Wild Cards, Gems, Gold Crates and cosmetics. Pass Royale is an in-app purchase that expires at the end of the season.
Players can also buy progression resources through the shop. Supercell says its shop includes cards, Gold, Gems, Magic Items and Evolution Shards, with listed items available for in-game currencies or real money. The practical advantage is faster access to resources and desired upgrades—not a documented guarantee of a particular match result.
Free rewards and unlocks
The free Pass Royale track includes Wild Shards, Hero Coins, Magic Lucky Chests, Gems and Gold Crates. Evolution Shards can also be earned through Pass Royale, challenges, events, Lucky Chests, Trophy Road and Evolution Boxes. Supercell says six Evolution Shards unlock an evolved form of a specific card. These free routes mean it would be inaccurate to call every Evolution or progression reward exclusively paid.

Supercell announced that, beginning in March 2026, the Free Pass would provide 75 guaranteed Hero Fragments each season. Its 2026 changes also shifted Hero unlocking away from random outcomes toward choosing a Hero with Fragments. Availability and reward mechanics can change with updates, so these examples describe the announced system rather than a permanent promise.
Paid convenience and catch-up
In its June 2026 update, Supercell said players could spend Gems to skip Pass Royale tiers; the Gem cost is based on the Crowns needed to reach the tier. The update also described catch-up rewards for missed daily battle rewards. Tier skipping is a way to accelerate access, while the existence of catch-up rewards shows that the system also includes a route for players who miss some daily claims.
Why players call that pay-to-win
The phrase expresses a fairness concern: if spending helps one player develop a collection or reach a desired upgrade sooner, that player may have a progression lead over someone relying only on free rewards. In a game where card levels and special card forms are part of progression, the concern is understandable.
But “pay-to-progress” is the more precise description of what the official documentation establishes. Whether a progression lead translates into an unfair competitive advantage depends on factors such as mode, card levels, deck choices, balance changes and matchmaking. The official sources cited here do not measure spending’s effect on match outcomes, establish a win-rate difference, or show that a certain amount of spending is necessary to compete.
Supercell has acknowledged progression friction
In its May 13, 2026 post, New Collection Levels & Mastery Changes, Supercell said progression had become increasingly complex and that rewards could feel disconnected from goals such as leveling a main deck. It also said the pace of the old King’s Journey slowed at higher progress. The company summarized the issue this way: “Progression in Clash Royale has grown increasingly complex over the past few years, and systems like King’s Journey haven’t made your actual progression rate clear or easy to keep track of.”
Supercell introduced Collection Levels, calculated by adding card levels and five points for each owned Evolution and Hero form. It also said easier Masteries and the new system were expected to help early- and mid-game players most. Those are the developer’s diagnosis and stated intent; they do not by themselves prove the changes have removed progression friction or resolved fairness concerns.

What the evidence can—and cannot—settle
- Established: Pass Royale has free and premium reward tracks, and shop purchases can provide progression resources.
- Established: Free channels exist for some valuable rewards, including Evolution Shards and Hero Fragments.
- Reasonable conclusion: Paying can accelerate collection progression and access to certain rewards, which can create a perceived fairness gap.
- Not established: How much spending changes win rates, whether a progression lead decides matches, or whether spending is required to compete.
Some players have used phrases such as “fair progression” and “pay 2 win” in community discussion, including a March 2025 Reddit petition thread. That is an example of criticism, not a survey of the player base or evidence that all players share the view.
For context, Supercell’s December 2025 update described Pass Royale variants based on Arena progress, with Wild Shards in both and a monthly Hero for players at Arena 15 and above. It also described Evolution Boxes from events and Hero Boxes from events and the free Pass Royale track. Its statement that Ranked cards would remain capped at Level 15 until May 2026 concerned that historical transition; it should not be treated as a current rule.
